Danyy baker compared Archie to a chimp – racist, stupid not funny. Lord Sugar comparing african men to other african men who sell sunglaSSES FUNNY.

Not funny. He demeaned professional footballers purely based on race. A joke about an Asian team working in a takeaway would also be offensive.

I’ve loved Danny since his 6-0-6 days – his books are a great read – but that was plain dumb.

        “not intended to be racist”

He posted a photo of a chimp with the caption “royal baby leaves hospital” knowing that the mother is african american but you think he didn’t meant to be racist, what planet do you live on!

        1. newsjustin

Yeah. I don’t think he intended to be racist. Some people just see funny. A chimp dressed up in fancy clothes will never not be funny.

          Planet of the apes, no?

(I’m sorry. It was too hard to resist.)

It was a deliberate racist insult.

DB is well know as hanging around with white nationalists in London.

Hmmm. He HAD to have seen that it might be taken “the wrong way”. From what I can gather, he didn’t post a photo like this for any of the other royal births… Unconscious bias, maybe?

Fantastique! Spent my time imagining I lived there. Plenty of cider and crepes consumed. Very sad to be home.

  4. Point of order

Can’t people just agree that it was a bit stupid. Why does he have to be fired? Imagine something not being made a big deal of these days. Sigh…

Imagine someone being held accountable for their actions…remarkable.

I’d say Danny’s Baker’s objective was to be funny and edgy and get more followers, i.e.if Frankie Boyle can do it. Sugar is an arrogant condescending racist. Both are rotten racist tweets. Glad to see this type of thing being policed somewhat.

Yep, I saw Bakers tweet as being more akin to a pop off the Royal Family, however, due to the child being mixed race it is easy to see why it could be perceived as racism. I can see why there is a furor about it though as he only appears to have done this for this child and not William and Kate’s kids. Foolish man for not thinking it through at best, or maybe, as Andyourpointiswhatexactly? said, it was an unconscious bias on Bakers behalf?

Sugar’s tweet was pure racism, plain and simple and Sugar is a pure [DEROGATORY TERM FOR A PENIS].

I just saw the tweet there for the first time and thought, haha media circus, parade him out, yada yada. Never for 1 second did I make any correlation to race. I’d say DB didn’t either.
Recently, the US’s humongous race issue has been emerging here in places it never was.
Alan Sugar’s is obviously racist. These pro sportsmen are the same as beach sellers I’ve seen abroad cos race.

Kind of agree – it took me a long minute before I remembered which royal baby he was referring to (and why it would be problematic).

Does it tell you how far we’ve come along that when I first saw it I laughed and didn’t immediately get what the fuss is about. Posh couple with posh baby monkey – funny! OBVIOUSLY there’s racial connotations. Simple but stupid mistake. Sackable? I don’t think so. Black baby with a ginger afro doing the rounds, is that racist? She is half African American, Harry is full ginger?

  8. rotide

I like Danny Baker a lot but I can’t see any way this can’t be construed as racist

    1. Brother Barnabas

even if danny baker was the most racist fupper on the planet – and was disgusted at the thought of anything other than pure royal, white blood within the royal family – he;d hardly be so stupid as to make that gag

i don’t see how it can be construed as anything other than an unfortunate gaff

      1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I thought that, actually. It’d be a ridiculous hill to die on if you were a proper racist.

    2. newsjustin

No rotide. I’d say it’s entirely innocent on his part. It’s actually other people’s notions of race….connecting a chimp with a mixed race person….that is racist.

      1. realPolithicks

You’ve got to be fupping kidding me, what a twisted view of the world you have.

      2. rotide

Actually normally I’d agree with you Justin, but in this particular case, where there has been multiple royal births recently with similar degrees of hoo haa, it’s hard not to see it as racist.

        1. rotide

Well innocent racism is certainly a legitimate thing. Not sure it applies here though.

  9. Spud

It took me a while to see the racial element here. I guess I wasn’t looking for it but took more note on the lampooning of Royalty and upper class.
In hindsight, it wasn’t the best idea. Trying to be funny is a minefield these days.

  10. Bald Archie

Hilarious. The tweet, the reactions, the tsunami of sniveling on behalf of 3rd tier (pretend) royalty, everything.

Good man Danny (whomever you are). Head. Nail. Hit.

    Buck the begrudges.

I’ve read & later watched & listened to DB since the punk days. Always thought he was brilliant, like the funniest, most knowing mate in the pub.
A few years ago, saw him on telly, I think it was a series about his favourite LPs etc. One of these was a U2 album. He described it, albeit with great affection, by doing the old ‘oirish’ accent, in that very specifically awful Cockney-does-Paddy iteration. Turned my stomach and made me kick my tv screen in. You think you know someone, huh? Slag.

  12. newsjustin

I 100% saw nothing at all that could be considered racist in this picture (in fact i thought it was funny) until the first commentator on here pointed it out.

I’m positive Danny Baker, who seems perfectly nice, saw nothing racist in it either.

I can kinda see why BBC overreacted and fired him. But it’s very unfortunate.
