Fintan Warfield tweetz:

Lunchtime thought: It is something else that Fitzwilliam Square is a private garden with access only for those with a key.

Yes – that and a membership fee to pay for the upkeep, supported by local residents and businesses. If you don’t like you’ve got Stephens green, Iveagh gardens and merrion square all within a short stroll – not sure how your post is newsworthy

Not really a news site though is it. It has silly pictures and internet cartoons. There used to be a lot of posts about typos but you don’t see so many of those posts these days…

It’s been privately owned for the last 49 years. And will remain so for another 100 years. A lot of parks were once privately owned. Merrion Square was private until the 1960s

There used to be a market in Fitzwilliam on a Friday when the proletariat could visit

Yes, Merrion Square used to be barred to the public, but Dublin Corporation negotiated the use of it, made it suitable for public access, and monuments to Irish UN peacekeeping veterans, to yer man Oscar Wilde in a reclining posture, and a memorial to Hiroshima were installed. It’s a way to go with city centre spaces.

    It is private land.
By the way Iveagh Gardens is currently closed although I’m told it will reopen shortly Please OPW

Rick (Ode to Cliff Richard): Oh Cliff / Sometimes it must be difficult not to feel as if / You really are a cliff / when fascists keep trying to push you over it! / Are they the lemmings / Or are you, Cliff? / Or are you, Cliff?

Neil: Wow… that was really pretty bad, Rick

Rick: Bad for society when the kids start to get into it!

It’s been offered to the council a few times over the years. Until they’re willing to take it over, the residents have to maintain it. Hasn’t this been on here before, back when someone had the bright idea of reclaiming it? It’s available for events if you want to open it up for a while.

It should be nationalized. Its right in the middle of our most dense urban area, it would be of far more benefit to the country as a public park.

“it would be of far more benefit to the country as a public park.”

      How would the country benefit?
Who exactly would it benefit? At a guess it would only benefit the people that live/work nearby. But those that live on the square already have access, and those nearby can go to Merrion/Iveage/Stephens’s green/Dartmouth.

      1. Zaccone

Who would it benefit? Its a park situated in the most densely occupied part of the city – tens of thousands of people walk past it every day. All of the surrounding parks are completely full of people on any sunny day, and so would this be.

Why is Stephens Green open to the public, and not a private park? Why is the Phoenix Park? For all the exact same reasons – large public spaces in the middle of large cities should belong to the public, so more people can enjoy them. Its a complete waste of space having this sit empty all of the time.

        1. Cian

As far as I’m aware the other parks weren’t nationalised – they were given/ donated to the city.

          1. Zaccone

How the city obtained them doesn’t change their current utility. And doesn’t change what a waste having a park in the middle of our capital city thats only open to a tiny number of people is.
