This afternoon.

Dublin Castle, Dublin 2.

Ministers leave a cabinet meeting where it was agreed that the government would not propose any action that would seek to remove Seamus Woulfe from the Supreme Court and a proposal to fine people gathering outdoors to drink alcohol was withdrawn.

From top: Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar; Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan; Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly; from left: Michael McGrath, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform; Paschal Donohoe, Minister for Finance; and Helen McEntee, Minister for Justice; Minister for Education Norma Foley; Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien; Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris

Moral inversion? They would not know the meaning of the word, meanwhile pet lap dog Eamon lies back and thinks of ministerial pensions and then begs and asks how high has he to jump!

Obviously the drinks cabinet optics ( suit yourselves ) of doing nothing with the judge but hounding the street scoopers dawned on even this lot.
But I don’t envy them their jobs at the moment trying to reconcile the competing strains of dampening down expectations for Christmas and trying to give the drinks industry at least some hope.
Mind you, there’s not many among them to inspire confidence especially that Foley woman whose manner enrages me every time I see her on the tellybox – and it takes a lot to get the goat of mild-mannered Charger let me tell you.

They should all be driving 2010 Octavias or something equally modest. No need for these huge new executive cars.
