Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley (above) deleted his Twitter account last night following controversy over two separate tweets

The tweetings of Brian Stanley
A Shinner from Laois/Offaly
Have caused some dismay
But they’ve all gone away
So don’t worry, there’s nothing to see

Ridiculous. No doubt we can expect a trawling through all the tweets of every TD now, going back to their first “is this on?” tweet ,and demands for explanations over anything that could be interpreted in a bad light.

This is a parliament of children.

Not often we’d agree, but it’s getting ridiculous now. I have seen many twitter examples across the board that could be produced to suit various situations.
At this stage, shouldn’t Politicians be barred from using Twitter/Facebook, and any pronouncements they’d like to make, made on their official party website? Government / opposition by Twits.

Good idea. I think a list should be made of jobs that are not suited to Twitter. Clearly politicians should be on it. I suggest all sportspersons as well.

Brilliant idea by GG. Get rid of the pantomime politicians from Twitter and social media in general: the whole lot of them: from FG to SF, SocDems to Aontu. They can bloody well take their armies of bots with them too. Give our heads a bit of piece.

Children and grown men in public office who think it’s ok to celebrate IRA killings at a politically sensitive time.

are you referring to an ambush that occured during the war of independence and then conflating that with say, the manchester bombing? because they are two widely differing organisations.

      1. Jam

I was referring to the more recent event in the north. I think the conflating has been done by Stanley not me.

there’s blood in the water now. just when they get the government on the back foot, they stick their own in their mouth.

I would have thought having Mork McSharry who some wag on Twitter referred to as a “human vuvuzela” as one of Stanley’s backers as a REALLY bad sign.

It was a bit grim to hear Senator Fintan Warfield “unable to comment” on this homophobic tweet on RTE Drivetime yesterday. He notably refused to also say anything in favour of Stanley. Still, the tables are now turned and FG are seeing an opportunity given the onslaught they have endured from Sinn Fein’s army of social media trolls. Most of us are simply bemused at this on going warped merry go-round where both FG and SF are merely opposite sides of the same old coin. Both needing each other to rally their base more than each cares to admit. To both of them I say, fupp off and give our heads peace.

I was with you right up until the SF MEDIA trolls part. Anyone with eyes and even a slight bit of intelligence can see(everyday) the vast majority of trolls are FG supporters and tds. Never ever attack on SF policy always just personal or something about North. Oh and I’m not a stead fast shinner but there is literally no comparison between them and FG when it comes to trolls, FG is World Cup winning quality at it.

I’m not going to get into the “Oh no, Sinn Fein’s army of social media bots is bigger than FGs!” because that is precisely the problem. Pantomime politics. Pay scant heed to Twitter and my advice: if an Irish political hashtag is trending- check the accounts endorsing it- if they have a slew of tweets praising Mary Lou or Leo then do what I do, switch off, ignore and chalk it down to the political panto dames and dukes.

‘Still, the tables are now turned and FG are seeing an opportunity given the onslaught they have endured from Sinn Fein’s army of social media trolls’

Really? Do you think that FG’s very recent (months) history will be erased by this?

    1. Bitnboxy

A plague on both FG and SF houses I say. Still, you’d want to be seriously living under a rock not to notice the amplitude of the Sinn Fein social media army. I hate this type of polemical “rally the base” politics. This is a mirror of SF and the DUP in the North. I don’t want that here.
