Coals To Newcastle

at

This afternoon.

Camden Street, Dublin 8.

Keavan’s Port.

Weatherspoon’s instant Irish pub.

The carpetbagging British pub behemoth paid €6 mililon to purchase the property and invested a further €27.4million developing the site, which has an adjoining 89-bedroom hotel and an untold number of massive tellies. Some of the brickwork is said to date back to 2019.

They come over here.

Who the light ale is Keavean, anyway?

Hic.

I’m looking forward to a few cheap beers. Great location too. Is there an outdoor area? Would be great to cheer on the boys Sunday night.

god charger, the reek of desperation off you is rank..
wetherspoons is where misery goes to die.

They’re very bland pubs but I’ll take blandness for €1.95 a pint vs €6+ anywhere nearby.

Good selection of craft beers too, often cheaper than you can find them in off licenses which is just insane.

Not a fan of chain pubs, but in fairness this is a beautiful restoration of buildings that were derelict for decades.

CAMRA is the only reason to ever set foot in there.

Remember, if you stick to the cheap pints and skip the food you’re costing them money.

‘spoons are not really known for their big TVs. Many have no TVs, those that do are generally muted and they have no pay TV.

The pub they have near the Irish Life Mall has drinks costing more than their Dun Laoghaire and Blackrock branches. So I wouldn’t be too sure about the cheap drinks.

How do the prices compare to the pubs near the Irish life mall, Doc?

That place that used to be Seán O’Caseys is called Piper’s Corner now and it’s almost €7 for certain craft beers there. I’ll gladly pay 25c-50c more than Blackrock if its still €4 cheaper than that kip.

People who haven’t been to one are glad to dismiss the places as soulless pits of misery. Truth is, you make your own fun and you’re only miserable if you go with a load of miserable people. Paying for your first pint with a tenner, then getting 4 more pints out of the change of that tenner tends to make everyone less miserable, in my experience.

Others talking about lack of music as a negative…… Its a godsend that you can hear each other and have a chat. Food is fairly bland, but you don’t go to Chapter One and complain about the state of the drinks on tap. Just eat elsewhere.

Wetherspoons has me conflicted. On one hand, cheap, decent beer so what’s not to like about that?

However, I found the food awfully bland, the atmosphere non existent and the lack of music a bit disconcerting.

Top that off with Tim Martin being a rather unlikeable chap and it leads me to not intending to ever frequent the place again, but best of luck to them I suppose, its nice to see that some people are still looking ahead even if I vastly disagree with the guy on quite a lot of things.
