I don’t buy that he won any race. The edge of space is rubbish. We have all flown in planes.
Are we going backwards? It took him 17 years to ‘skim’ space, six decades after Yuri Gagarin went into ‘outer space’ and 50 years after Nasa astronauts played golf ‘on the moon’.
We’re in a period of unprecedented exploration of our solar system – it’s just not manned exploration because that’s too expensive. Then again, China’s just launched three astronauts to man their new space station, so who knows, new space race ahoy.
