Last night.

Panorama on BBC1.

Meanwhile…

“Wherever animals are used for entertainment and profit corners will always be cut. Cruelty, exploitation and death are a sad reality of the horse racing industry here in Ireland and the UK.

“The industry is not glamourous, it’s not fun and it should come to an end because of the immense exploitation and cruelty involved.

“We call on kind people everywhere to tear up their betting slips and would urge progressive members of government to axe any further grants in the upcoming budget to this deadly industry.”

Animal rights campaigner John Carmody this morning.

And that’s why I utterly despise Horse and Greyhound racing and the industry it spawns. From stud to the bookies, it’s filth and mired in blood.

….racing pigeons outlook must be bleak.

i do admit to enjoying a good day at the track, nothing like it,everything everything you got left riding a long shot in the last race after a miserable wet day,in first by a head rounding on the inside the last turn at 20-1….come on come on..Oh My God…..

there is indeed a dark side, but a well run racing stables in the morning is a thing of beauty, just is.

My house is surrounded by some of the finest stud farms and stables this country has to offer. They are indeed a thing of beauty and to see a a mare with her new foal in their paddock leaves me with a sense of beauty and dread all at the same time.

The animal has the best of everything while its money making potential is intact – from stud, sale or racing. Afterwards, it’s a most ignoble death for such a majestic animal.

It’s such a utterly disgustingly dishonest ‘sport’.

yes mixed feelings here like Johnny

aside from the bestial thrills of the track itself

so much to admire, the majesty and intelligence of the animal, the schooling the animal invariably always gives to the persons manipulating it, (and smells out those who can’t and annihilates them, particularly the jump horses), the odd moments of primal beauty when (wo)man and beast do coalesce, the steam rising of the fillies as they canter through the Curragh mist

on the other hand…isn’t the worse excess of the bloodstock industry a pure semaphore for the immutable flaws of mankind itself?

There’s a phrase “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”

Incredibly, with you it’s the exact opposite.

They still cannot successfully ban hare coursing and fox hunting so I don’t know what chance they will have with Horse Racing, the Galway Races is the highlight of the year don’t you know.

Horse racing gets more money from the government than youth mental health. Shows you where their priorities are.

      1. millie bobby brownie

Is that true? Absolutely disgusting if so. Especially considering the way mental health numbers are going in this country, particularly with regards to young people.

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

€50 million vs €60 million from Budget 2021.

There’s no profit in mental health, especially mental health destroyed by gambling.

      2. Slave to the Rhythm

also tax-free for breeding/sireage fees AFAIK, and 1% tax is it – on betting?
        Disgusting and vomitous

I didn’t watch the video, I don’t need to see the details.
In my opinion Horses are Noble creatures, stand beside one, observe and draw your own conclusions.
As we continue to evolve, my hope is that, we, as a species will outgrow harmful childish pursuits, or at least learn to limit the needless harm we cause in pursuit of our fun and gains.
We have a long way to go yet.
    For now, money trumps all.

    1. Slave to the Rhythm

      fair play
I do have some hope for the dregs of humanity.
let’s be optimistic for the next hour at least, or until the quaaludes kick in…

          1. eamonn

you might want to save ’em for a reiny day.
On a brighter note, with any luck we will also evolve beyond these Quaaludes you speak of.
By the way is the rhythm you is enslaved by the beating of a humdrum ?

  4. TMan

Unbelievable hypocrisy. The horsey industry will have you believe all their horses have a better life then most people, which may well be true once the horse is making them lots of money!

  5. Rob_G

While it’s dreadful that these horses are killed, I’m struggling to see how this manages to elicit so much more outrage than the >50 billion other animals that are killed for humanity’s enjoyment each year.

HRI are not responsible, according to HRI. They do what all Irish business do and expert the problem, then turn a blind eye
