From top: Republic of Ireland senior squad; Ciarán Murphy, of Second Captains

This morning.

‘Today with Philip Boucher Hayes’ on RTÉ Radio One.

Further to  manager Stephen Kenny confirming some Republic of Ireland players have opted against the Covid vaccine…

…. Ciarán Murphy (top), co-host of the Second Captains football podcast, said:

“It’s interesting from the point of view of a dressing room and the dressing room dynamics. I’ll leave the immunology to the eminent professor [Cliona O’Farrelly, professor of comparative immunology and biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin was a fellow guest] and I might talk about the dressing room dynamics and we’ll stick to what we’re slightly better at here…”

“This idea that young men, in this situation, in the NFL or Premier League, young sportspeople, lead a very closeted life. And the richer and more successful they are, the more closeted they are.

“The more suspicion perhaps of mainstream media, to use that terrible phrase, there is amongst these people. And they might get talking about conspiracy theories or, you know, wild anti-vax theories that they would have seen on the internet.

“And this, it spreads in the dressing room in a way that is kind of maybe harder for us to understand, you know, for those of us who work in a regular work environment.”

“…Sportspeople live in a kind of weird…it’s a weird situation that they find themselves in often. And the stick, in this situation might actually be more effective than the carrot.”

Gulp.

      why are they stupid?
footballers and other athletes are regularly tested. negative test, no problem.
i just wish everyone would stop with the name calling and hysterics, it gets us nowhere.

      1. Micko

        Exactly.

A friend is involved in the management of sport stars.

They employ a bubble system. They’re tested and then in the “bubble”. No one leaves the group and no one new comes in unless tested.

They’ve been doing this all last year before vaccines and it’s been pretty successful.

And +1 on the name calling.

        1. Nilbert

so you’re saying they should be isolated and locked down in their bubble rather than take the vaccine?

          1. Micko

I’m saying they should have the right to choose and not be called stupid or have to lose their careers over that choice as was initially suggested above.

          2. Nilbert

No Micko, I wasn’t referring to the name calling, I was referring to your implication that isolating and remaining in bubbles was a better solution for the players…

          3. Micko

It seems to happening anyway. And it’s only for the time of the event sure. They’re not permanently locked down.

The day or so before the event they start isolating and get tested I believe. Management, trainers, athletes and everyone that will be around them for the duration of the event.

And as some sports stars have concerns about the vax, the only solution is to use the bubble system for all.

I suppose the only other solution other than that would be to enforce vaccination upon them.

            Which would be morally wrong.

          100% on the name-calling.

One does bite one’s lip so to speak, by times.

That said the name calling will persist. Ignore it is honestly the best advice.

As Mark Twain said (and maaaaan he said a lot of cool, pithy stuff):

“never wrestle with a pig, it gets mud all over you and the pig likes it.”

      2. eamonn

It really has become a them and us situation.
“WE” can call them names – rw nut jobs etc, because for whatever reason” they” question the new orthodoxy – “They” can expect no less. “They” can be afforded no credibility.
If “they” all got jabs – no need for restrictions any more – for”US” – “We” know this to be true.
Sad to see the polarisation that is happenning around this.
It is like gulliver’s travels and the argument over how one should eat an egg.

      3. Gringo

But how will these paragons of the beautiful game get into their favourite bars nightclubs and brothels without a jab?

  1. SOQ

So what are they going to do? Ban some of their key players? And for what?

A vaccine that doesn’t prevent spread, with whatever efficacy it had waning within months, for a disease they are low to no risk of in the first place.

    1. scottser

And you give over too ffs.
Vaccines have a limited effectiveness, we know that. There are risks, we know that too. But for most of us, we stand less of a chance of dying by get a jab.
You’re like a yapping pup that should be belted on the snout with a rouled up paper.

  2. Verbatim

What a horrible man, subtext: they are all dumb as puck and should be beaten into submission! He should be fired for talking about his team members like this. More and more we hear people with his tone emerging, it’s sickening!

Watched first couple of minutes but will get back to that, not a huge soccer fan but find Keane to be a fascinating guy with some really interesting takes so cheers for sharing.

  3. Oro

His borrowing of the term ‘closeted’ for this situation strikes me as containing more than a touch of cynicism.
