Bed Blockin’ Beats

at

Any questions?

This afternoon.

Department of Health, Baggott, Street, Dublin 2.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan at the weekly Department of Health Covid -19 briefing…

…said NPHET had a ‘substantial concern” about the number of ICU beds being taken up by Covid-19 patients because he said the knock-on effect is that those beds would normally by ordinary people who cannot get access to surgeries or interventions

Dr Holohan warned fully-vaccinated people that there are still risks involved with getting Covid-19 “even if those risks are substantially reduced”.

Just because everything is open doesn’t mean we all have to do them or that we all have to do them at the same time,” he said.

The Chief Medical Officer said it would “be sensible” for people who were in nightclubs at the weekend to stay away from vulnerable people in the following days.

Meanwhile…

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn [above] said the trajectory for Covid-19 infection in Ireland in the coming days and weeks is not good..

He said that although 42% of cases in ICU were fully vaccinated people, the key point is that 58% of people in ICU are not vaccinated.

NPHET concerned by growing Covid rates as 101 in ICU (RTÉ)

Well, the good news is that mandatory vaccination’s on the way. So this should be dealt with pretty soon.

In 2009 the HSE itself said that Ireland needed 579 ICU beds.
We have 286 or so at the moment, and are told this could be ramped up to 350 if needed.

So, in eleven years, the HSE and Health Ministers Varadkar, Reilly, Harris utterly failed to tackle it.

And here is Holohan (of Cervical Test notoriety) preaching and blaming everyone but himself and his merry band of Health Ministers, along with his ‘professional’ colleagues, for the lack of ICU beds.

    Doesn’t wash I’m afraid.

    And Ronan Glynn……

“He said that although 42% of cases in ICU were fully vaccinated people, the key point is that 58% of people in ICU are not vaccinated.”

42% vaccinated having caught it and ending up in ICU would be the Key Point actually.

      No,
41 people out of the 3,365,053 vaccinated adults are in ICU.
50 people out of the   309,428 un-vaccinated adults are in ICU.

see my post below for details

      +1

Ireland has half the EU average of ICU beds per capita. One quarter of Germanys. Despite us being one of the wealthiest EU countries. In 2020 we had fewer ICU beds per capita than at any other time in the past 40 years.

If we had a reasonable amount of ICU beds there would be far, far less need to panic right now. But FF&FG don’t want the public asking about that. Much better to blame the 5%~ of the population thats unvaccinated for all our problems. Its all their fault you see, not decades of mismanagement of the health system!

“Just because everything is open doesn’t mean we all have to do them or that we all have to do them at the same time,” …anything to be said for a ticket system for everything.

Looking at those numbers on the second slide:
    Fully Vaxed: 41
    Partially: 6
    Non-Vaxed: 50

And put that against total population:
    Population 5,010,000 (CSO estimate)
    Fully Vaxed 3,744,053 (from HSE)
    1st Vax 62,076 (from HSE)
No Vax 1,203,871 (pop – vaccinated)
we can see that the unvaccinated are 3.8 times over-represented in ICU.

If we only look at adults [actually the over 19 because of how HSE shows numbers vaccinated by age group]
    Population 3,690,000 (CSO)
    Fully Vaxed 3,365,053 (HSE total – 379k 0-19s)
1st Vax 0 (I don’t know, but assuming all on 1st vax are under 19)¹
No Vax 324,947 (pop – vaxxed)
we can see that unvaccinated adults are 12.6 times over-represented in ICU.

vaccination numbers from here (recorded on 27/10/2021) https://covid19ireland-geohive.hub.arcgis.com/pages/vaccinations
¹as we increase the numbers on 1st Vax this makes the vaccine more effective, e.g. if a quarter of the 1st vax are adults the number not vaxed drops by 15k and the additional risk for non-vaccine increases to 16.1 times.

This doesn’t account for the fact that an even higher percentage of the most vulnerable are vaccinated. Most of the vaccinated in hospitals are elderly people with underlying conditions. There are really minimal amounts of people in that age group who aren’t vaccinated.

      1. Cian

Maybe – it depends on the age-breakdown of those in ICU too, and their vaccination status.
We also need (and don’t have) an accurate count of the unvaccinated.

    2. Man On Fire

Rubbish, theres a significant amount who cannot take the vaccine in ICU with serious underlying issues, do your hokey numbers account for that percentage?

Just weeks ago NPHET to be stood down and press conferences to cease. Anyone noticed that Tony’s back from his holidays since then?

    Ireland-Portugal ticket outcry:

All events at Aviva Stadium will now be protected under the vaccine passport scheme.

It’s a fun idea came we came up with at the dental veneers lunch in Avoca- Newland Cross.

Would be nice to know how many of the 360K unvaccinated have already recovered from Covid and probably feel they don’t need a vaccine.

They may even be in the very scientific “approved” 6 months window and have a Vax pass.

We’ve had over 435K confirmed Covid infections in Ireland, people who are essentially immune now – myself included.

I’d think there’s some overlap in these two figures

Might be some good info to know.
