Columnist Fintan O’Toole argues that “those who won’t get a shot in the arm” could “end up raising that arm in stiff salute”
This morning.
Via Fintan O’Toole in The Irish Times:
There are, crudely, three kinds of “anti-vaxxers”. In ascending order of purposeful malignity, they are the egoists, the paranoiacs and the fascists.
…Instead of treating them all as an undifferentiated mass of fools and knaves, it is better to think about their individual motivations.
The fascists can’t be argued with, not least because they don’t actually give a damn either way about vaccines. The issue exists for them merely as another anxiety to be exploited. The point, therefore, is to try to separate the other two groups from these malignant forces.
In dealing with the egotists, it is surely best to appeal to their egos. Telling them that they are stupid and wrong won’t work. Neither, obviously, does the plea to think about other people.
…As for the paranoiacs, the aim should be to work with, not against, their suspicion and mistrust. They won’t listen to official admonitions. But their friends and neighbours can ask them why they are so willing to trust online “influencers” and smooth-talking charlatans.
Try to get them to see that the spread of conspiracy theories is itself a real and well-funded conspiracy. People who take pride in “thinking for themselves” must be urged to actually do so.
Every week, it gets harder for a general public that overwhelmingly understands the need for vaccination to stay patient with those who don’t or won’t. People are dying, not just from Covid, but because the unvaccinated are taking up scarce capacity in our already overstretched hospitals.
But rage, however justified, is self-defeating. It merely drives misguided people towards those who want to turn a biological pandemic into a political plague. It adds to the chances that those who won’t get a shot in the arm end up raising that arm in stiff salute.’
Thud.

He’s not wrong..
He’s insane.
+666
Can you point to any other ‘news’ source linking or even suggesting, that Demaryius Thomas death was covid related?
Like even one your extreme MAGA,right wing yank ones…..that’s not news,it’s kinda insane.
johnny, very few of your news sources apportion any blame on these collapses to the vaccines. A “short illness”, a ‘Medical issue” or died “suddenly and unexpectedly” will be the most they will say.
…in your opinion, what news sources out of Atlanta did you rely on?
Because a ‘belief’ isn’t the same as a fact. Except here.
Em…. you have beliefs you proclaim as facts Nigel. Real corkers too LOL!
Pot, kettle and all that.
Another passer-by spared.
Johnny, why do you think Bill Gates donated $350 million to the media? A third of a billion, however, is a drop in the ocean, compared to the 2000% profit he’s made on his recent, incredibly prescient investments in drug-pushing corporate entities.
What makes him so? Can you elaborate?
This column is insane. If Fintan is serious he may too be insane. I’m not a doctor.
Just as well Bodger. I understand insanity is a legal term, not medical.
I think O’Toole has nailed it. Almost every week we watch the egotists on their soap boxes screaming – and screeching for attention. Those who are paranoid have no trust in the messages from officialdom. Then the more sinister element are those who are to the fore in not only the anti mask and anti lockdown movement, but also the anti immigrant / anti refugee groups, among others.
The sinister element. Like the mothers who stopped the mask mandate last week.
You mean the hysterical paranoids.
Hey, leave the mothers out of this – all right?; it’s unnecessary.
Calm down Bodger, don’t be getting hysterical.
You need to brush up on your Burgundy.
Beaujolais goes to my head.
Yesterday’s piece ‘doctor’ on Demaryius Thomas was medically related,no….for a non doctor……did you find any other, even yank right wing news source covering it as a COVID story ?
‘Like the mothers who stopped the mask mandate last week.*’
*Actual mask mandate may not have been stopped.
Say what you like about Kevin Myers, but he has Fintan O’Toole’s number.
https://kevinmyers.ie/2021/04/14/sanctimonious-otoole-in-the-gutter-again/
Lol
Talk about an appeal to ..
It’s Kevin Myers’ opinion of Fintan O’Toole that is important – not the article itself.
None of Kevin Myers opinions are important.
Not even if they are accurate and true?
How could you tell? You’d have to read his execrable prose.
Yes, I even bought and read his book – ‘Burning Heresies’ – an extremely entertaining and enlightening read.
I suppose some people like to wallow in the Myer.
Jeremiah springs to mind.
He’s completely ignorant of our arguments, the data, the facts, the science, and ultimately the logic and rationale behind our views and because of this ignorance he’s come up with this insane rant.
….but in reporting/speculating on the tragic death of a African American, kinda obscure retired National Football League player,in his shower from a seizure,in Atlanta, which he’d been having for a year, hence the eh ‘sober companion/driver’….bodge has all the facts./ data/ science behind him right to speculate in a ghoulish, rubber necking manner on his death and link it to COVID….
johnny, why do think all these athletes are collapsing?
‘He’s completely ignorant of our arguments’
He’s not. That’s the thing.
…in gathering your ‘news’ from Atlanta, what or who would be your local sources….I mean otherwise people may think your a bit ya know ignorant….covering it from Dublin,an Atlanta death of a retired NFL player,it’s not like you cover the NFL…..
Any luck with finding one other ‘news; story’ about his death and covid, take your time…
….Bodge, why do you think I would even know about the tragic death from a seizure in his shower,of a almost 40 year old X NFL player,in retirement in Georgia.
There are 320 million people in states, what Atlanta news sources did you rely on or do you follow long retired African American NFL,’athletes’,in some like fantasy league ?
I guess we’re only hearing about the well known athletes collapsing. He was 33 btw.
Ever been to Atlanta,he played for Tech or the yellow jackets,34 on Xmas day.
Any luck finding one other, even from your yank right wing sites,YouTube linking his death and COVID?
‘His life was a story of triumph over considerable challenges. With his mother and grandmother serving federal prison sentences starting from the time he was 11 and a father who was often absent because of Army commitments, Thomas lived in at least seven different homes growing up.‘

‘He’s completely ignorant of our arguments’
You beliefs, your assertions, your claims, your selective use of data, your preconceived conclusions, your outright lies, imposing patterns and meanings, decipehering symbols and numerology – it’s the sort of thing we’ve all seen before, back when there were people online denying evolution, denying climate change, saying demo charges took down the Twin Towers, claiming there were WMDs in Iraq, that Hilary Clinton was ordering children to abuse via a pizza place, that Sandy Hook never happened etc etc ad nauseum.
Nigel, all you’re doing here is projection and conflation.
And just to pick one thing you said because it made me laugh as it’s so ridiculous. it was people like you claiming the were WMDs in Iraq. We knew they were lying and protested against the war.
You support Tony Blair and the establishment’s agenda to implement the Digital ID pass system. You are the one pushing the flawed lockdowns, and covid cult agenda.
See? You are inventing things with no relationship to reality to make them fit your world view. It’s complete lack of resemblance to reality is irrelevant, it has become fixed as fact in your head. You actually think this is critical thinking, logical reasoning? It’s actualy… Trumpian.
You could apply all that to someone thinking men are women with a penis, in fairness.
As said before… pot, kettle…
https://www.broadsheet.ie/contact/
If the hair transplant fits…
‘You could apply all that to someone thinking men are women with a penis,’
Trans people are real, Clampers, they are not made up.
Nobody said they weren’t real. But you said women have a penis, that sex is changeable, that men can have babies even proclaiming so by posting stories of ftm persons with their sexed female biology intact as you claim a man had a baby….
Your beliefs Nigel, not facts.
+1, Cui Bono but he is being honest, at least, by avoiding science, entirely & sticking to vile, neo-fascist polemic.
I never said any of that. I said trans men are men, trans women are women. If you want to obsess about genetalia, that’s on you.
No, you said men can get pregnant.
+1 :)
‘No, you said men can get pregnant.’
It’s like you’re a child trying to play a game of gotcha, while the adults can’t quite work out what arbitrary rules you’ve made up.
‘Insane’ yeah?
Not ‘incorrect’ or ‘misguided’?
(Sucks teeth)
Looks like we got us one of them there paranoiacs….
He forgot the grifters also
Says the egotistic paranoid fascist.
Tomj, I am none of those things and I don’t see this issue as left or right.
@bodger
tomj and the alt left see it that way…
hence the dog piles.
They now they have the endorsement of ‘Ireland’s leading public intellectual’ to further vilify, but with bigger words. In The US, meanwhile, Chomsky (without a p) suggests starving out the unjabbed. Liberals, eh?
@ Un mutual, speaking of dog piles how are you today.
That’s just the type of thing an egotistic paranoid fascist.would say Bodger
Flog him!
‘I am none of those things and I don’t see this issue as left or right.’
Absolutely!
O’Toole has left out those who can’t have the vaccine, for a start, and they don’t deserve any form of abuse – not that anyone deserves to be abused simply because they don’t wish to have the vaccine. I don’t come into any of his categories, either, but I am aware of quite a few people in the ‘push the vaccine’ group who are very deffinitely egotistical and/or paranoid and/or fascist – which is probably why they feel the need to accuse those who disagree with them of having those characteristics.
One thing that this situation has done is to identify fanatics of the ‘you will obey without question’ type of whom we have not previously been aware and it is very frightening – even some people who have been complaisant to date and have done as they have been told to are becoming very concerned with the direction we are heading. If only more people would take notice.
Well said.
I never said it was a left or right issue.
@tomj

Not planning on going to Japan.
@tomj
Perhaps not, but foot etiquette is not exclusive to Japan…
How about china?
Speaking of which… The Japanese have an interesting take on the fragility of porcelain… It’s called Kintsugi and is inspired by the philosophy of Wabi-sabi.
Perhaps it’s something you might find interesting?
Why might I find it interesting?
You’ve gone off the deep end Bodger.
Sometimes you have to dive deep to find the truth – as anyone who has ever watched your decommissioned T.V. show would know.
You drowned in antisocial filth.
Bodger swims with the Salmon of Knowledge.
*I hope that doesn’t come across as sycophantic – not my style.
The comment needed a rebuttal.
And, yes, I know it’s not the real Jeremy Kyle!
Thank you, benblack, much appreciated!
Used to be a great commenter here called Salmon of Knowledge.
Or maybe Salmon na Nollaig.
Forced to leave due to an hazelnut allergy.
Sign of the times.
Bodger look at chaos of these comment sections. I used to love this site and it’s not about differing opinions. Its not about covid either; it’s the TONE here which has beome poo and this had been it for a long time. I come back for a look after yonks and it’s the same thing. Jesus.
*a hazelnut allergy
The deluded and hopelessly gullible conspiracy believers and their anti-vaxxer blowhard’s alter ego’s display multiple signs of insanity.
Their gullibility is aided and abetted by aggregator sites like BS creating a harmful public disservice with its links to nonsense anti medical science/conspiracy Facebook & Twitter excreta
We get plenty of claims that this is like 1930s Germany, but it’s you lot who claim there’s a secret wordl-controlling cabal with tentacles in finance, media and entertainment out to poison your bodily fluids. Guess who was making those sorts of claims in 1930s Germany.
And you clearly have no understanding of the extreme concentration of wealth and power globally in a relatively small group of individuals and groups. There are numerous individuals with greater influence over global affairs than entire States and nations. The major nations political class are all completely subject to the control and influence of the financially powerful. Money is power. This simple concept eludes your simple mind.
No, it doesn’t. That small concentration of wealth did not, however, engineer the virus so we will all take a vaccine designed to kill us.
“He’s insane”
Oh, Bodger.
it’s hate speech. so ironic
i like kittens
Admiral Nelson? Charger.
Fintan has nailed his j0cktrap to the wrong mask.
Narrator: He was wrong. Very wrong.
Bodger getting hammered here. Finto is getting hammered over on the IT.
No, he’s right, MacGafraidh, Far Right.
He is wrong to
1: equate skepticism with fascism
2: fail to assess consequences of a little jab that many have over reacted to
3: equate in his binary and churnalism way those who disagree with his simplifications as paranoiacs or egotists
Such as his swivel eyed loon comment about brexit who may be wrong now?
Standard faire scenes a faire bullpoopy-poopkins going down well in Dublin 4
We have a number of commenters here who claim they are skeptical, but who believe the vaccine has been deliberately designes to kill us all. One other commenter at least has promised trials and hangings as the ultimate outcome of the pandemic. I think antagonising them on a national forum (as opposed to on a internet forum) achieves nothing but a boost to their sense of victimhood, but tell me again how O’Toole is misdiagnosing these people?
O’Toole is not a doctor – how could he possibly diagnose or misdiagnose anything?
It’s a mystery, and yet he does.
A quacky hack.
Ann Darrow sends her regards.
Here Fintan,
America called…
They want their editorial back
can’t they take him with it
…two things have restored my faith in human nature…first, the outstanding number of people who recognise that the answer lies in science and have been trying to do what is right…over 90% in Ireland…wow…second, the tiny number of we know here as ratlickers…less than half of 1%…the rest, they should not be demonised…least of all labelled by Mr O’Toole…
Not the flex you think it is Bisted. (to quote Tony K from a few days ago)
…didn’t understand the comment then and don’t understand it now…has flex been appropriated…try making new words, like meme, for example…
Still Not the flex you think it is Bisted.
…wonder would Fintan have a label for you Giggser…a vaccinated anti vaxxer…doubt you are the only one though…
You still haven’t the question asked of you too numerous times to mention eh. Why the interest in all things personal about me?
Eh?
…are you not seeing my comments Giggser…I’m fascinated by you…a total contradiction…a vaccinated anti vaxxer…
Nope. Fascination doesn’t cover it. That’s because I answered your question a number of times, yet you keep coming back and are given the same answer. Your ‘interest’ is because the answer isn’t the one you want. And that, there, is your problem.
@bisted
‘a total contradiction…a vaccinated anti vaxxer…’
The contradiction is in your head, bisted (as I am sure you are aware). It’s because you have applied an invalid epithet, ie, anti vaxxer. Almost nobody (even amongst those who have not had this ‘vaccine’) is opposed to vaccination but many people are opposed to things that are happening at present, especially in relation to pushing the vaccine.
However, you will continue to use the term ‘anti vaxxer’ because it suits your narrative and the truth is an inconvenience when it comes to pushing your point of view.
@bisted
…while I admire your perspective and i respect your faith in humanity, I feel you might be over estimating the populations response and motivations.
When you present people with a 24 hour threat that induces a classic example of existential terror, then you get a glimpse of the nature of humans.
That human nature you mention is Fear.
Fear of the unknown.
Fear of death.
Fear for one’s safety.
Fear of harming others.
Fear of the other.
Fear of standing out from the crowd.
Fear of disapproval.
Fear of social exclusion.
Fear of gov/public sanctions.
Fear of Fear.
Fear affects decision making… Fear coerces.
Some of us have seen Fear before…
Some of us have seen Fear weaponised before.
As I posted earlier…

Toole by name, tool by nature…..
The old divide and conquer technique, how charming.
There are probably a few folks out there that will not get the clotshot for other reasons.
Based on a risk/benefit analysis, a sensible person in good health may not want to take it based on a massive list of adverse reactions, for a illness that is survived by 99.7% of those that get it.
Some people might not want a drug that was created using the cell lines of murdered babies anywhere near them.
I guess some would look at the success rate the shot has had thus far, in a country with a 90% jab rate, cases still high, boosters now required and liberties still curtailed, and come to the rational conclusion, that they just don’t work.
Some have a genuine hesitation to taking a drug with no long term trial data, especially whilst watching a rapid rise in athletes falling over with heart issues after taking the jab.
Others might see the bigger picture, that the jab is just a cunning ruse to get wide spread acceptance of the QR code. A code that will used to enslave mankind when it is tied into a central bank digital coin with a Chinese type social credit score.
It is a disingenuous at best to say there are 3 types of antivaxxer and cheap trick to try to insert the Nazi canard.

Still of the opinion it’s just no ones business what I or anyone else does regarding the vaccination. Plain and simple
+11111
I think we can all agree Mr O’Toole is a dose in so many ways….
However, the reverse is also not true – calling people fascists and nazi, and spreading NWO nonsense (often thinly disguised anti-antisemitism or hyper-idiotic-nationalism… not that everybody spreading this is an anti-Semite, etc… etc…) because they are trying to deal with a problematic virus in the age of a globalized world is idiotic…
It’s not a “problematic virus”, ce, it’s a perfectly normal, run-of-the-mill virus of a type that has been giving us colds for a millennium, nothing new at all. No matter how much hype the media have injected, the virology is undeniable. The fake vaccines, on the other hand, have killed & injured more people than any medical intervention in history but then again, these injections are politically-motivated & cannot be justified medically or ethically.
….probably just a coincidence.
‘Hartmann, who said on Facebook that vaccine passports resembled Nazi Germany’s draconian laws, is the latest in a long line of vocal vaccine opponents, often outspoken Republicans, to die of the respiratory illness.‘
https://www.thedailybeast.com/william-hartmann-anti-vax-republican-who-denied-michigan-election-certification-dies-of-covid-19
Speculating on Demaryius Thomas death, yeah totally normal……there is also that his mother and grandmother were jailed for non violent drug offenses in rural Georgia, when he was a child, later pardoned,by all accounts he was a role model, unlike ….
‘Mr. Hartmann made it clear on his own social media accounts that he did not believe in Covid vaccines. He suggested that vaccine passports, showing proof of vaccination, were something out of Nazi Germany.‘
Hell of a guy.

So who’s ‘insane’ again ?
Who’s insane? Multiples of the anti vax anti medical science posters on BS are showing clear signs of mental instability betwixt their insane posturing and their gullibility in preferring to believe in anti medical science Bull Poo
I would pay good money to meet you in real life.
lol, I’d say you’re just so tough. If you’re such a big man why don’t you stop hiding behind the handle?
Seems to be quite a bit of confusion around the term anti vaxxer. An anti vaxxer is someone opposed to the vaccination programs. Not the elderly and vulnerable or someone who holds off on them *however, will take it* provided that the information offered is transparent and has been validated. He’s talking about anti vaxxer.. Like a few of yourselves who refuse to take it because as he says you’re paranoiacs.. Thinking there’s an ulterior motive to the vax plan. I’ve nothing against anyone fitting that criteria and your currently unsubstantiated beliefs do nothing for me and leave me completely ‘in woke’ but don’t use the elderly and vulnerable to make yourselves seem less like conspiracy theorists. Bodge, I love you as a person all the same.
The term anti-vaxxer is being changed by some publishing companies. Merriam-Webster now say it’s:
a person who opposes the use of vaccines or regulations mandating vaccination
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anti-vaxxer
I think we should be waiting until the clinical trials finish in 2023 and then make informed decisions with our doctors but if anyone just wants to take them if in high risk category then it’s their choice. Most aren’t at any risk so should not take them.
For me the biggest issue is the vaccine passports which are, in my opinion, really just the Digital ID pass system which is being used to control us and is going to get a lot lot worse if we don’t reject them. A good thread summarising them below:
https://twitter.com/ThreadsIrish/status/1469260641995149316
O’Toole has his finger on Ireland’s pulse here.
Far more so than the deranged founder of an obscure internet forum whose vaccine obsession has turned him into a crackpot.
Personally I quite like the Singapore idea of making unvaxed Covid victims pay for their own medical treatment.
Then they’ll truly know the cost of their own stupidity.
Gearoid, I’ll pass on your good wishes. All the unjabbed I know are sane and healthy.
Are your sane friends also people like you who still think Trump lost the election because it was rigged?
Nutjobs gonna nutjob.
See the way Bodger didn’t respond to your trump question here? He likes to keep his crackpot theories separate from one another so that the pattern is not so obvious.
You are really down the rabbit hole of anti science nonsense,
You need to seriously consider your mental health

More lies, please stop!
Again with your ‘anti science’ nonsense. No, there isn’t consensus. Over 60,000 medical scientists and practitioners have signed the Great Barrington Declaration.

Repeating a lie, doesn’t make it true.
‘Repeating a lie, doesn’t make it true.’
Correct but it doesn’t stop you doing it. Why is the question you need to ask yourself.
You’re going to have to prove I have
I only counted 46.
“All the unjabbed I know are sane and healthy” That is very good news but I can certainly think of one or two particulary noisy about their unvaxed status who are clinically insane by any measure
Sucking the marrow out of life.
Most of us have a minuscule risk to covid. Check your risk here – https://qcovid.org/
I see no logical reason to take a new type of vaccine (still on trial until 2023) that doesn’t stop me catching or spreading covid when I’m not at any real risk in the first place.
All about you, then? That says a lot.
It doesn’t do anything for anybody else if I take it. These particular set of vaccines do not provide immunity or stop transmission the way a traditional vaccine does.
Any potential benefit is only for the individual taking it.
And yet they still keep pushing the communitarian argument for all its worth.
Taking a CoVid-19 vaccine is a personal choice only and given the associated risks- people, especially young people, should think long and hard before committing.
I’d say your risk is close to zero, as you would have to leave your home to catch the thing in the first place.
I prefer the term conspiracy factist seeing as there’s so much data that goes against the received narrative on covid.
Why are you here if you don’t like the content or the moderator? Do you just like sneering and insulting people that you disagree with? Time waster who has lost clarity due to fearful indignation.
‘Personally I quite like the Singapore idea of making unvaxed Covid victims pay for their own medical treatment.
Then they’ll truly know the cost of their own stupidity.’
Good idea – no-one who takes unnecessary risks should get free medical treatment if they are injured or become sick as a result. Some examples would be: people who play sports, go climbing, caving, mountain-walking, do water-activities, bungee-jump, drive or ride in cars, ride bikes, fly in aeroplanes or any other aircraft, put up decorations by climbing a ladder or step-stool, etc, etc, etc.
Of course, someone would have to decide what was essential and what was an unnecessary risk but we could set up a team of medical advisors and statisticians, perhaps, to guide the politicans in their decision-making…
PS Please note that I have my tongue in my cheek, if anyone is confused.
I’ll happily step outside the public health service but in return I want all of my taxes that go towards public health to be returned and to not pay for your healthcare anymore. My six figure salary pays for your healthcare. I want this back. I also want my taxes returned for the cost of vaccines.
In about ten years, when you finally reach your 30s, you might be on a six-figure salary too.
I quite like making the obese pay for their medical treatment too. if you can afford KFC mega-buckets…
‘Personally I quite like the Singapore idea of making unvaxed Covid victims pay for their own medical treatment.’
No. Just no. I’ll join the most deranged far-right anti-vaxxers on a march to Varadker’s front door if they try to bring in such a thing. No.
Good for you Nigel.
+1
But no problem with a vaccine mandate, Nigel? Or, am I misrepresenting your vaccine mandate position?
I’ve never supported a vaccine mandate. Unnecessary in Ireland, certainly.
Unnecessary anywhere in the world. Definitely.
I could see some countries reaching a point of desperation, but we’d have to occupy a shared reality where covid was a threat to agree on such a thing and that seems unlikely,
Thanks for clearing that up, Nigel.
You do realise, Gearoid, that none of the clotshots are free, right? Taxpayers across the West will be paying off the bills for the kill-shots for some time, yet, not to mention burying the dead & reaching ever deeper into their pockets for even more big Big Pharma bills for drugs to relieve the pain of the millions of injured victims of a holocaust that will never end.
‘To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.’
Not entirely correct, U N M U T U A L.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” – Proverbs 9:10
That is, the terror and the wonder and beauty of such a profound and true realisation.

I’m probably just paranoid Finto https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/16/covid-vaccine-side-effects-compensation-lawsuit.html I presume you can afford quality health insurance bud.
Just got gifted his new opus…looking forward to reading his thoughts on the past. However, if these are his thoughts of the present situation, I’m in for a high blood pressure read.
Went to Buswell’s hotel yesterday, and produced a negative 24hrs old PCR test, and could I come in for a cup of tea, the auld fellow on the door went to see his supervisor and came back to say, if I wasn’t vaccinated I couldn’t come in, I explained, I was, perhaps, more inclined to be Covid-19 negative than the majority of the clients in the restaurant. He told me on no uncertain terms, that they were following government orders..Sacred Ireland, out I went into the bitter cold… plus ça change plus c’est la même choses.
… not to mention his very fortunate and lucky contribution to the new EU bank note designs and how they will represent us as a nation.
To Whom It May Concern…
I don’t like Fintan O’Toole, but putting that aside for the moment this opinion piece is flawed
because it either deliberately or in error ignores one substantial cohort of people: those aplenty out there who try to practice the wee bit of critical thought, who don’t require a dogma as their compass or some “priest” to follow for their analysis and decision making
I believe that the key issue here when you boil it down is simply a matter of trust
we’re all so fully aware of the pitfalls of placing trust in the state or government and over many years we’ve watched on, often taking a direct negative impact, as big business like Banking, Property, Data, Pharma abuse weak control mechanisms often greased up behind the scenes by self-interested political ideologies
career chancers like Varadker or the clown over in no.10 we’d usually suspect are lying if their lips were moving, we know from experience that decisions and strategies aren’t ever centered on the best interests of ALL citizens…and yet there are some commentators like this p—k who somehow expect when an event like this pandemic shows up ALL the citizens should just do what they are told like the lemmings they are supposed to are??
gimme a break LOL
Nicely put and thanks.
MOPErs gonna mope..
It has been depressingly familiar to see a once fairly turned socially aware journalist slowly morph into an apologist for the neoliberal kleptocrats ru(i)nning our lives, the Guardian’s Nick Cohen is a prime example. Interesting how he calls the great unwashed, I mean unvaccinated, fascists when it is his own words that are so. Irony free with no self reflection as to any other possibility. People tend to look like what they are as they grow older. Shifty and uncertain?
It’s an important lesson, that journalists will always toe the editorial line. Very few actually have a conscience.
Agreed, Chris, having worked in the media for more than a decade, I can confirm, first hand, that this is very much the case.
Any time I stuck to my guns & submitted copy that I knew to be displeasing to the editors, I found the published article purged of my problematic scribblings, so I toed the line & paid my mortgage.
Since then, due to its unpopularity leading to the near financial bankruptcy of the Legacy Media, it’s only gotten immeasurably worse, now they are also morally bankrupt.
Mainstream media’s revenue has been plummeting these past few years. They all hope in time to be taxpayer subsidised by government and so will happily sell government narratives to curry favour. There is no Fourth Estate any longer, just PR men for established power.
@ E’Matty Yes, the 5th Estate has eaten the 4th one. There’s no more investigative journalism, just – experts say…
The advent of online news saw their revenue fall by 90%. They accepted the NGO money & now with Covid, governments are also funneling them revenue. They’re giddy with excitement at this profitable narrative.
It’s a slap in the face, governments taking on debt, to propagandise and instill fear in citizens & leaving the resultant debt around our necks. It’s shameful that more haven’t spoken out – Judas is the icon for our times.
This article by O’Toole is his acceptance speech for the award he recently received.
He’s a hack – always has been a hack, and will die a hack – a lifetime achievement award awaits.
So those who won’t conform to the government’s view and give up their rights are fascist?
The ironing is delicious

I suppose you could call that a retort
In a rational society the media and government would be trying and engage with people to find out why they haven’t gotten vaccinated. Is it for medical reasons, is it because they had a bad reaction to the first shot, do they just not know enough about it etc. Accept the minority who have legitimate reasons, and do their best to convince the rest to get a shot.
Our politicians talking about “DECLARING WAR ON THE UNVAXXED” and O’Toole here, in our most prominent Irish newspaper, calling them FASCISTS however is both just spectacularly unhelpful at convincing any of the unvaxxed to get vaxxed and just downright scary as far as democratic values go.
Calling anyone who has a different viewpoint to yours a fascist, trying to deplatform them and refusing to engage with their viewpoints is ironically incredibly authoritarian behaviour.
‘Calling anyone who has a different viewpoint to yours a fascist,’
I get called that once or twice a week here. FYI.
And fascism is far more closely associated with sinister conspiracy theories than with massive socialised public health schemes.
Actually fascism would be more closely associated with government policies than it would with individuals concerned about their own rights
Every political movement that ever existed is closely associated with government policies.
But not all political movements demand compliance, shutdown any opposition and use propaganda as a tool to further their goals. It’s a slippery slope which our current government has been sliding down for quite a while
Most political movements require compliance during a public health emergency. The ones that don’t are worthless and evil.
€9 dinner.
That is all.
Scary how that became a thing- IQ less than shoe size.
If it was €5 dinners it would attract the poors. My mate works in Il Vicollo in G-town. I was in there for a pint and a chat three weeks ago. In walks a pompous pink jumpered pratt, looking for a refund for a voucher.
He said it’s a fairly regular occurrence, people either booking tables and then cancelling or buying vouchers and wanting refunds as a way to punish them for their stance on the great unwashed.
It wasn’t many generations ago when we were all living in pigshit. It very quick that some forget. The coming fall will be harder for some, but in many ways – it is deserved. Luckily, I don’t have too far to fall.
Zaccone, in a real pandemic, created by an actual killer disease, with an IFR of 40%, 20%, even 2%, rather than 0.03%, no coercion, indeed little encouragement, would be required to persuade people to have a punt on gene therapy, if there were indications that it might grant immunity. However, it’s an undeniable fact that none of these conditions apply.
Nobody who was not engaged with the mass media or subject to the draconian social restrictions would ever, in a million years, conclude that we are in the midst of a dreadful pandemic.
Anyone who spent 5 minutes perusing our mortality figures for 2020, on CSO.ie, can see the truth, for once plain & simple, staring them in the face.
This is really low brow stuff. It’s surely symptomatic of cognitive dissonance. Firstly, he won’t touch the elephant in the room: the Covid vaccines have absolutely failed to deliver as originally promised. Secondly he’s unable to face up to the enormity of what is happening globally: it’s now as plain as day – to anyone thinking clearly – that attempts are being made in countries around the world to institute hi-tech systems of surveillance and control. We can debate what is motivating governments to do what they’re doing, but at this stage those that can’t accept that this is the unfolding reality, are in denial.
It’s too far out of line with Fintan’s pre-existing world view for him to digest, so, in order to try to reconcile what is happening, he instead seeks refuge in the derivative propaganda being spread internationally by corporate media:: “our patience with the unvaccinated is running out”, “unvaccinated Covid-sufferers are overwhelming the hospitals” “people who lack trust in authority figures are conspiracy theorists who need to be shown the error of their ways”, etc. The usual “pro-vax vs anti-vax” divide and conquer stuff, but with his own pseudo-intellectual embellishment in the mix: “3 types of anti-vaxxer!”
It’s lazy, condescending, journalism. In Fintan’s reality bubble there isn’t a sizeable number high level of medical experts (such as Dr Robert Malone, Dr Sucharit Bhakti, Dr Mike Yeadon, etc) who have raised the alarm about the design of Covid vaccines. No, according to him all dissenting opinion is down to “online influencers and smooth-talking charlatans”.. The guy is so out-of-touch, it would be laughable if it weren’t so disturbing that he’s a prominent Irish journalist in the so-called ‘paper of record’.
You truly are deluded and the arguments you ignorantly spew are so anti medical science it beggars belief.
Take a reality check and note that the overwhelming medical opinion of every country/race/political persuasion worldwide is scientifically fighting a worldwide pandemic and that alone makes total nonsense of your anti-science “online influencers and smooth-talking charlatans” that you are so gullible you choose to believe in them.
Science based on empirical evidence https://popularrationalism.substack.com/p/spike-only-vaccine-a-colossal-blunder
John, the overwhelming opinion of every scientist who’s words have been delivered to you via the corrupt media may have swayed you but there are far more numerous scientists saying the exact opposite, while being ignored by the media, under orders from their owners & investors.
I still think many people have an image of a scientist as a boffin in his lab, seeking after knowledge, when in fact, the vast majority of scientists work directly for Big Pharma or depend on them to finance their, increasingly complex & expensive, research.
Complete sap.
To call people exercising their right to bodily autonomy fascist is deflection at its finest, because it is a straight down the line civil rights issue, which is left wing as it gets. We are not the ones whom with zero scientific evidence are advocating for a ‘papers please’ society. It is extremely disingenuous, condescending and downright insulting.
But the worm is turning and many people are now asking when will this whole vaccine thing end. The joke about the Pfizer loyalty cards is becoming reality and it is slowly dawning on people that never since the Nazis have we seen such state over reach- so, who is the fascists again?

Godwin’s law has obviously bypassed you. Your wilful ignorance and anti medical science gullibility has put anti vaccination/public health measures deluded fools like yourself into coffins and smacks of the lowest form of ideology.
And what medical science would that be eh?
From the ‘experts’ who are firmly in Pharmas pocket?
Or the ones who have risked everything by speaking out?
The science is far from settled- especially as over even short periods of time, these experimental gene therapies clearly do not work.
“ anti medical science”
All Hail Science!!!

Godwins Law is an internet meme, John, designed to limit free expression. Frankly, anyone who takes it seriously, especially standing where we are now, in the middle of a holocaust of Civil Liberties, is an idiot.
Exactly. I live these fools who actually seem to think Godwins Law is an actual law or maxim. It’s a completely made up stupid concept.
Another ‘meme’ that made me shudder when I first saw it – “Do your own research!”. A mocking idiom that calls any inquisition away from a central narrative as stupid. Do people not remember ever getting a second opinion?
There are many highly qualified people, with descending views – that should at the least be listened too. Especially when the central narrative allows for none. No, it isn’t listening to ‘Sharon from Facebook’ . It’s paying attention to voices that have spent their lives working in associated fields.
It’s a ruse that unfortunately, caught out many.
How many jabs had you had now John?.No turning back now. You’re commited.
The worm is out of the bed late today.
I was sword fighting?
@Flawless I think I recall you said you work in this field of digital tracking (apologies if I am incorrect) would you not do the decent and honourable thing and expose it so we can finally put an end to this pesky pandemic.
There’s no need to ‘expose’ anything, its out in the open https://id2020.org/
While I think of Fintin-tin as a bit of an ossified relic, an irrelevant leftover of a long-vanished liberalism, a dinosaur from the 60’s who somehow survived with his middle-class, middle-brow viewpoints intact, into the age of medical fascism, entirely unaware that everything has changed, changed utterly, I admit myself impressed by the mental & moral gymnastics he performs here. Bravo, old man! Who would’ve thought he could wrestle such large, cumbersome Strawmen into position?
A while back, I saw a sub-head for one of his articles which claimed that the UK’s tardy reaction to “the Delta variant”, was linked to Brexit. I had a little chortle but passed on actually subjecting myself to his tortuous attempt at logic, so perhaps this “black is white, up is down, the vax shall make you free, mein volk” delusional claptrap has been spewing out of his cake-hole for a while now, who knows? Indeed, who cares?
It’s impossible not to conclude that he’s completely lost all contact with reality & is currently floating in a tin can, far above the world & the only response is to laugh at his demented utterances & grant his neo-fascist ranting a resigned shake of the head, while pondering the truism that we all tend to get a bit more conservative as we get older & some go even further to the old Right than even that.
It has to be admitted though, that throughout the fake pandemic, the IT has been as generous as any of the red-top comics in dispensing fake science & Elite-sponsored propaganda to the masses & wonder if he’s merely following orders so he can keep on doing what he loves, masturbating in public & being applauded by the chattering classes for his onanistic efforts, then handed a tissue to wipe his sweaty brow & clean up the mess, as thoughts of his own genius had led him to ejaculate all over his lovely tweed trousers.

Don’t worry, as soon as Angelus Scanlon’s Ask Me Anything comes on, it’ll soon calm down.
The nazi salute thing is a bit lame in my opinion. He’s largely but not completely right on the rest of it and he sensibly doesn’t try to claim he knows how many people are in each group.
He does completely miss one group…modest in size, but nonetheless present, of refuseniks. That is those prolife people, mainly Catholics who argue, despite advice to the contrary from everyone up to and including the Pope, that some or all of the Vaccines are irredeemably “tainted” and the result of processes or testing using cell lines derived from aborted humans.
I believe they’re wrong and misguided and, on balance, taking a potential life saving (for you and others) vaccine is defensible even with a very small and very historic link with an abortion. It is a very remote, if any, cooperation with evil, and outweighed by the good that vaccines do.
Anyway, this thinking does inform some people who refuse vaccines. I don’t expect an Irish Times columnist, or pretty much any Irish journalist to be familiar with religious issues though.
Nothing to do with abortion, at least not directly, newsjustin, it’s all about science, mRNA, ribosomes, the family Coronaviridae & the excessive power in the hands of the super-wealthy, numbering about 6,000 & regarding everyone but themselves as expendible, useless eaters.
For goodness sakes, some have openly admitted their belief in Eugenics & desire to eliminate a billion human beings.
It might not be for you, but for some people it is about abortion. That’s the reason they give for not being vaccinated.
I say just get yourself vaccinated. On balance it’s the safest and best thing to do during this utterly unpleasant time.
There is no balance to your point, it’s just the corporate line – an illusion that might bring safety and a return to ‘normal’ , it won’t. https://popularrationalism.substack.com/p/spike-only-vaccine-a-colossal-blunder
Jebus H, just when you thought it was safe avoiding the usual crowd disturbances on the Saturday Papers grudge match, someone throws down a couple of masks as goalposts and off we go here
I think if we just all step back a little from the polarised position of to jab or not to jab and try look at things in the larger global context, we might make more progress, as humans.
I think most normal people would admit that there is a correlation between wealth and power. Most people would know someone that pulled strings to get a deal, or a planning approval, or make a legal problem disappear. But when you magnify that by a massive amount, it is possible to arrive in a position where wealthy individuals, and groups control government policy, all of them.
Our governments are pushing a Covid narrative, because they are told to do so, and for several reasons.
They are broke and the debts being created, cannot be repaid, this is school boy math.
When people realise they have been scammed, some will become angry, and control measures need to be in place for that.
The great reset needs to happen so that the wealthiest people on the planet, not just keep their fortunes, they increase.
What comes after this current failed capitalism model implodes, like WTC7, will be totally controlled, with QR codes being required for normal life. QR codes seem to be readily embraced already
Rather than being distracted by the incessant and divisive chatter on Covid, might our energies not be better focused on the folks pulling the strings of the puppet politicians?
This is done through think tanks and policy groups, like “Chatham House”, “The Council for Foreign Relations”, “The Club of Rome”, “The Committee of 300”, “Open Society Foundation”, “The Carnegie Institute”, “The Rockefeller Foundation”, “The Gates Foundation” and the list goes on and on.
Money buys influence, lots of money can buy obedience, hence a world in Lockstep. Lockstep was a 2010 Rockefeller policy document that the more curious should research. The truth is out there but it is a hard red pill to swallow.
Bottom line is if they succeed, we will all be in a big open air prison. The problem appears to be that most will not see the bars or feel the weight of their chains.

Well the second coming of Christ should surely put a stop to the like of Soros and Gates etc. failing that I would stick a few quid on Michael O Leary to be the one!
It has been spoken, and the Word always returns fulfilled.
These times we are experiencing have been spoken about too – a copy of which is available in every hotel room bedside locker.
You’d be better advised to keep your few quid in your pocket.
Indeed, Gerry, for several years now, the annual gatherings of the WEF at Davos & the multitude of similar gatherings we don’t need to know about have been pondering one important question.
To quote the WEF “how to deal with large crowds of angry people”.
well all those with a vested interest in the artifical power structures of this world, are nailing their colors to the mast, for all to see.as their systems crumble, their fear rises ,and they will lash out at those that go against it. o toole, a great thinker of our time ,me thinks not . no you are just another dellusional, ego mind ,projecting your fears onto others, whilst mentally licking licking youre own a@@e with delicious pride.
Reading the pitiful whines of the ant-vaxxers at being associated with fascists is laughable. Most of the marches you go on are organised by fascist or far right elements.
Who told you that, RuilleBuille? What’s your source, the State, Irish politicians, tabloid newspapers, perhaps? Ah, I know, the dogs on the streets.
Do ants need to be vaxxed?
This about-face by O’Toole, a deep-dive into fascism, is quite simply explained by a question.
What did the clever people do when the Nazis came to power?
Indeed.
Its criminal that your journalistic talents are now limited to the comments section of broadsheet. How many people at this stage do you think know the real truth? Do you think the likes of Dee Wall and Gemma O D are only wheeled out by the MSM to muddy the true truth of this plandemic?
^ halfwit troll
Nah but yah. See Fintan is on the money with the egotistical thing. Nothing drives you lads more crazy than to be lumped in with the likes of Dee Wall and Jim Corr as it fupps up your whole memorandum/identity and takes away from your unique special intellectualness. See above where K Cavan has to discredit his other NWO brethren Sailor Jerry by pointing out his disagreement on the issue of aborted babies being used for vaccine research.
I’ve quite a few friends who have read the same books as you and wont take the vaccine nor wear a mask and they wouldnt dream of being seen at one of the freedom marches and to be associated with such dimwits in their view. Im guessing you clowns are the same but happy to come on here and brag about how you know everything that is going on in the world but everyone else is just too dumb/brainwashed to see it. Yes, capitalism is out of control, boom, such clever boys, Im sure yis are great craic at parties etc.

The lack of nuance on what constitutes an ‘antivaxxer’ has been a wonder to behold… O’Toole’s piece is another frothing at the mouth clusterfudge…
May I present my own story… I watched this whole debacle unfold along with everyone else with a mixture of shock and horror… the initial scenes out of Italy were terrifying. The devastation to the elderly and infirm in our communities has been real… but for the rest of us this seems like something that anyone with a half decent immune system will conquer.
As for myself I’ve been on the road since the whole thing began e.g. December 2019… living, working and passing through various countries with all the testing, quarantine and associated rules… China, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, France, Spain (again), Netherlands… so I’ve seen how various jurisdictions have handled it… none of them that well or so it seems.
I’ve had more PCR and antigen tests than most and passed with flying colours (it must be close to 50 at this point). In fact this past summer I had hoped to return to Ireland to get vaxxed… I was the last one in my extended family to do so… until what happened to the second last person… my aunt.
This is what was related to me by my Mother (her sister). She got her first dose of Moderna one morning and felt sick/ill within an hour. She went for lunch with my uncle, came home, told him she was going upstairs to sit down and was found dead in the chair within 6-8 hours of the shot. The coroner pronounced it a heart attack (which it was) and against my uncle’s wishes refused to perform an autopsy to examine the exact cause (this happened outside of Ireland although my relatives are originally from Ireland). My aunt had been told by her medical practitioner at her previous medical examination a few months before that she had (and I quote)… ‘a five star heart’. Our family will probably never have closure on this and it will always remain a ‘what if’…
Once I had gotten the news I resolved to avoid any mRNA shots due to this tragedy. There is a history of heart issues in my family and I am extremely careful/cautious as it is. I have yearly diagnostic tests at great expense and maintain a strict fitness regime.
So what am I? Somebody exercising bodily autonomy or a facist anti-vaxxer? When I relay the above to people the reaction has been quite telling. Most people offer their condolences and understand my reasons for abstaining from the shots but there is a very vocal minority who will argue with me ceaselessly about how I should ‘wise up’, ‘see sense’ and stop being ‘anti science’.
Okay cool… but at least offer me a treatment that meets the old school definition of a vaccine. Nothing that’s unfolded so far has convinced me these shots are worth the risk… but to each their own. I guess I’ve made my choice even if that’s at the expense of the civil liberties I used to take for granted.
Thanks for sharing your story, He who shall not be named…fullstop.
The prospect of mandatory vaccination is what really troubles me.

I think there are four groups – the egoists, the paranoiacs and the fascists and the anti-vax gobshites on Broadsheet.
There are only two groups or sides to this and everything else you will encounter during your life here on earth:
1. Lies
2. Truth
The blue or the red pill.

But it MUST be the vaccine and not covid because… reasons.
Asymptomatic cases of Covid in healthy people are obviously to blame for all the professional athletes keeling over all of a sudden when they never did before.
Daisy
would you accept that there has been an unusually high occurrence of cardiac related illness amongst high performance athletes in the last year?
if so, what do you put that down to?
is it community transmission of C19 or vaccination? what ratio do you think? 100:0? 0:100? 50:50?
So Fintan is suggesting that the seven percent (is that still correct?) of the adult Irish population that have not been vaccinated are Fascists or will soon be recruited into the world of fascism?
The National Party are Ireland’s only right wing political party and in the last general election they received less than 5000 votes (0.2% of the total ballots cast for reference).
To suggest that not taking a vaccine equals support for far right extremism is laughable, but to do so in what is notionally seen as a national paper of record is alarming.
Fintan has jumped the shark on more than one occasion but he surely needs to be fitted for a straight jacket on the back of this inflammatory nonsense, and those here saying he’s correct are every bit as delusional and out of touch with reality as he is.
Would hate to be vaxxed. You believed that you had protection but you have none.Commited now to life of boosters. You must feel like a fool.
a day well spent…
O’ Toole is eloquent, and he uses it to subjugate and manipulate through his eloquence with the platform he’s been afforded.
I honestly think that being subjected to hearing the common people’s opinion of them on social media has driven Irish journalists like Fintan absolutely batpoo crazy.
White Dove, you can bet your house – if you can afford one, that within a decade, O’ Toole and his ilk in the media, politicians, academic [sic[k] folk, will ALL be crowing from the rafters and tweeting that they couldn’t speak the truth about the medical injections and subsequent injuries/ deaths because their feathers were clipped due to …
