So from next week, if I was across the channel, I could shop without wearing a mask. I could take my kid to the cinema. I could go to a restaurant. I could go to a pub *and* stay past 8pm.
But, instead, I’m here – basically on the other side of the Berlin Wall.— Damian (@raggedlines) January 20, 2022
This morning.
Mr Martin, tear down this wall.

As someone who was in East Berlin when it was still communist, I can assure you Damian that you are not in any way, shape or form behind any ‘wall’.
The very fact you state that you could pop across the channel at any time is one glaring example of how utterly dumb your statement is. As you might recall the Berlin wall had gun towers, mine fields, razor wire and had an awful lot of armed guards. Can you show us where you have encountered these measures in Ireland? Can you detail how you were prevented from leaving in the same manner East Berlin residents were?
iano, would you deny us our david hasselhof moment when it all comes down?
What kind of monster do you take me for? I’d not even have denied the Stasi a dollop of the Hoff!
For shame scottser, for SHAME!
;)
MOPErs gonna MOPE.
Can you show us where you have encountered these measures in Ireland?
Back in the day, South Armagh was pretty close?
South Armagh in the 70, 80s etc. ≠ modern day southern Ireland.
Semantics in overdrive from yourself ian.
Mrs T grew up behind the iron curtain, and while clearly covid is not the same as the USSR, the authoritarian nature and arbitrary restrictions of society do strike a parallel. Especially when the epidemiological situation here is more/less the same as across the Irish sea, and yet here we have these arbitrary restrictions. Not a million miles away from looking over the border at the free world from within the depths of the Iron curtain.
Herself thinks its ironic that she moved to here for freedom so long ago, now its the reverse – the ex-iron curtain is in some places, more free than here!
Semantics in overdrive?
He made a clearly incorrect assertion that I questioned.
He is not ‘basically on the other side of the Berlin Wall.’ If he was, he would not have the option to travel elsewhere.
I’ve outlined the reasons why it is a decent metaphor, your repeated assertions that he is “not ‘basically on the other side of the Berlin Wall.’” is just extreme semantics.
I didnt realise that East Germany and the Soviet sphere of influence was totally defined by the option to travel elsewhere, and not the crushing authoritarianism in place.
Give me a call when the tanks roll down O’Connell St. and we can take this up again?
In the meantime, drink your milk and get on that damn plane.
You weren’t there Ian-oG so how can you compare? The oppression in Soviet countries was way more than just tanks- it affected every single aspect of life.
I know several people who were born and reared in east Germany. The attitude was so different to what we know here. Small details like what defined a good citizen.
yes I did,
my neighbors are non vaxed, Polish, Lituanien, south Africans and a Ukrainian lady, they don’t want anything forced on them and can’t believe the introduction of the vax pass, they say they had to fight hard for their freedoms and the coercion alone is enough to put them off.
I’m sorry but in the context of a highly contagious disease, that’s just daft. There must be other, fairly powerful, cultural and social factors at work.
that’s what they told me,
one of them works in a large pharma company
ALL coronaviruses are highly contagious diseases, including what we know as the common cold. Contagiousness is not the issue, virulence is.
Sorry Janet I edited that after you replied but yes, east Europeans have a healthy scepticism if not cynicism of the state’s motives.
You’re not going to magically make ‘just’ virulence the issue with a virus that spreads so incredibly easily simply by saying so.
If it stops them from protecting themselves from a highly contagious virus, it’s not that healthy.
Ian, you missed the point spectacularly, then plonked some superb whataboutery on top. You clearly don’t even believe this nonsense yourself.
Yeah, ‘basically’ Damian’s a bit of a drama queen.
2 different countries Damian FFS, feck off over there if you think you would be more at home
Ah, the selective country comparison. You’ve been paying attention to the government’s speil in this. We can compare ourselves to other countries where restrictions are similar or harsher but when the tables are turned and they lift restrictions suddenly the fact that we are not them means no comparison is needed
I have never done this comparison, I’d prefer if the Irish government made it’s own decisions for Ireland instead of looking at what country X is doing
I VERY much think Ireland shuld study what other countries are doing and, more importantly, what the outcomes are. Idiotic not to. There needs to be a huge study undertaken about what was done, what worked and what didn’t so that pandemic response plans can be formulated or updated, preferably with international co-operation. Also idiotic: looking across at the UK and complaining about being behind aBberlin Wall. Stupid, stupid, stupid comparison.
Yeah, let’s look at Austria, keep it to this side of the European wall…
We’re in the EU Liam, our government don’t make any decisions, apart from meaningless ones.
I know west Brit is a hack thing to type… but Jaysus, some of ye don’t make it easy
FFS talk about false equivalence….I’d hate to see any of these prats deal with some real oppression…pandered g0bshites
Ah, oppression and authoritarianism would never bother a quisling like yourself. You’d just enthusiastically join in and rat out your neighbours for having family over or similar.
The Channel? Is Damian in France?
Yeah Damien. Fupp off to England if you want to live like that.
We like being told what to do by a singular authority and having restrictions and rules placed on our lives for absolutely no scientific rational whatsoever over here.
It’s what we do God damn it!!!!
Bleedin Protestants…
At the risk of being shouted down because of my apparent nationality, I have to express my admiration for Micko’s response and for the meaning behind the words!
;)
I always liked Dylan Moran’s take on Protestants, go to church, sing a little, maybe eat a bickie go home and have a carefree wank
I’m not sectarian- I’ll sleep with anyone.
Ok this is going off on a tangent now- or maybe its a bicycle?
I always enjoy by proxy the Catholic guilt
Well I’m not guilty at all. So you can poxy off.
good for you
bit boring for my guilt vampire
a bickie? a tray-back more like.
plus a lovely sponge
It really bothers me when people use the term banana republic incorrectly.
Agh Damian just do what the rest of us are doing, go out earlier, drink faster, help the economy !!!!
