This afternoon.
Dail Eireann.
Meanwhile…
Varadkar also reminds the Dáil that SF opposed expelling a Russian diplomat from Ireland in the fallout of Salisbury; SF described that as a violation of Irish neutrality; Varadkar “welcomes Sinn Féin coming to its sense and finally realising what the Putin regime is”…

Ah here.
Meanwhile…
Ireland has pledged to support any EU sanctions targeting Russian business interests on its soil. “Ireland is militarily neutral but in this conflict is not neutral at all,” Deputy Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has told Ireland’s parliament.

This 2020 analysis of Russian shadow banking in Dublin’s IFSC found that €118bn was funneled by 106 entities back to Russian interests from 2005 to 2017. https://t.co/rAUKp6H2aO

Pedant.
Earlier: “Hit Putin And His Henchmen Where It Hurts”

“ Ireland is militarily neutral but in this conflict is not neutral at all,”
Pick and choose neutrality? Some boyo is Varadkar. Himself and Kenny donated our neutrality long ago.
If Varadkar wants to give away our neutrality he should enlist for the front lines himself
his old 10km runs will come in handy wha
Well, Janet, he could become the first leader of a country to charge at the enemy brandishing the Rainbow Flag.
A few cans of dutchy for a bit of courage ;)
We are not in NATO?
There’s a shorter way to spell NATO, SOQ, it’s U-S-A.
The perks of being in the EU another empire
To be honest Ukraine since 2014 has been engaged in a civil war and now our leaders strut around as our country is falling apart involving us in a war
To be honest let’s get out of the EU
From day one the west goaded Putin
Now he upped the anti
Next step is back down or be prepared for our kids to march off like lambs to the slaughter because Putin is not backing down
blah blah blah, yeah ok Varadker
you and Mehole can spend the rest of the afternoon writing strongly worded letters, check out the Gap.com’s latest range of socks or whatever, Coveney can invite the ambassador around for tea and some Ferrero etc.
you want to do something useful? shut down their money flows through the IFSC and do it TODAY
He’s all talk. Just like…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V76mtNixdCE
I don’t think we can afford to do that & it would probably be, mostly, Anti-semitic, anyway.
the Ukrainian people, many of whom have made Ireland their home
The only Ukrainian people I have ever met in Ireland were illegal. Also quite left wing which makes sense as the government there is to the right of Attila the Hun.
The only Ukrainian I ever met was Russian, it turned out. Didn’t even speak Ukranian.
Nope I worked with a few some time back. Very intelligent and educated guys doing pretty poo jobs as it happens. One had a PhD in politics- hence why he was here I expect.
Do we not need a referendum to alter our neutrality?
just gombeens with big mouths it would appear ?
Well, Jo, back in the day when we were a functioning democracy, yes, we would, now all that’s required is WEF-boy Varadker to blurt it out & hey presto, neutrality bye-bye.
our government love an oul grandstanding speech. sometimes those speeches promise some kind of action. they very rarely deliver it. we’ve come accustomed to it and know to take everything they say with a truck load of salt. But if Varadkar’s going around publicly saying Ireland is not neutral, it’s more than an empty speech. If the Russians decide to enter Europe on a few fronts, Ireland being one, they’ll say “Ireland outlined clearly that they were our enemies” and suddenly Varadkars speech has a deadly impact on us all.
gombeens with big mouths
Relax, Doctor, you’ve been watching too much fake news, maybe? Russia will not be invading Europe. The areas Putin’s taken so far, Crimea & the two People’s Republics, all want out of Ukraine, anyway. The referendum in Crimea was 96.77% in favour of escaping Ukrainian control. It’s as much a liberation as an invasion.
then where’s the real news? everyones lying all the time.
The Irish are browbeaten and trauma bonded to what FFG offer, theyre reluctant to give it up even though we are going to end up a pretty divided screwed up nation indeed
I watched that speech earlier & noticed that everything he said was a lie. The war is over, anyway, Russia won. Ukraine has been a playground for the US for some time, overthrowing governments, the usual US imperialism but Putin is never going to allow missiles to be installed 5 minutes flying time from Moscow & the US & it’s leadership hasn’t got the balls or competence to oppose him.
Earlier, I saw Pelosi’s speech, where she hilariously rabbits on about how “Hungary” is surrounded by Russia, she’s more decrepit than Biden, even, hasn’t a feckin’ clue.
I wonder how the US would react if Russia wanted to place missiles in, say, Cuba?
First off, I don’t support Putin in any way. He is an abhorent creature, and I would be happy if he died tonight. Although very likely someone is ready to step into his shoes and continue what he has started.
But I always feel that it is good to look at things in context, so here’s my 5 cents’ worth.
Back in the day, I attended a conference in E Europe.
There were people from various W European ccountries there, almost every E European country including Ukraine, and a huge contingent from the US. Strong smell of CIA about the place, promoting ‘democracy’ aka US interests at every turn.
In the twenty years after the USSR fell apart, the US invaded and occupied Afghanistan, the US invaded and occupied Iraq (twice), they set up bases in various Central Asian countries. And not only those countries – but we’re focussing on the Russian sphere here.
The US military adventures didn’t work out very well for them, their bases in Central Asia have been removed again, they were forced out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Today they are in full retreat. The reality is that the US has never recovered from the Lehman crisis (nor have we). It’s system is falling apart, and given the nature of geopolitics, we should not be surprised that Russia has moved to recover what they lost in the 1990s. Very, very sad for Ukraine but this is the harsh reality.
LEAKY… criminal yes or no?
