When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease

Shane Warne

This afternoon.

Via BBC:

Legendary Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne, one of the greatest cricketers of all time, has died of a suspected heart attack aged 52.

Warne took 708 Test wickets, the second most of all time, in 145 matches across a stellar 15-year international career.

His management company said Warne had been found unresponsive in his villa on the Thai island Koh Samui on Friday.

“It is with great sadness we advise that Shane Keith Warne passed away of a suspected heart attack,” they said.

RIP.

Any excuse.

Warne had a go at our hero Djokovic so let’s all have a laugh that he’s dead? Classy!

    1. K.Cavan

Broadbag, you must have a small factory located at the bottom of your garden, turning out Strawmen in huge numbers.
You really do spout it, lad.

  2. Fergalito

Nice that the Annabel gets to gloat and we all get to share in it.

Social media – marvelous isn’t it how it connects us all?

    1. Daisy Chainsaw

Antivaxxers really have some subhuman attributes. To compare them to scum is an insult to scum.

      1. ANO

This is Nick Kelly for Broadsheet, and by extension ‘Bodger’ as owner of the site (according to Wikipedia), sneering at a man’s death.

How that reflects on them as people is up to the individual to decide.

Me, I think scummy is an accurate description for the blog post.

        1. K.Cavan

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
Step away from your pearls, loosen your grip & hop down from your high horse, ANO, you just look like a hypocrite up there.
          You don’t belong there.
          Cos you’re a creep….

      2. Micko

        Eh…

You lads were all laughing at the anti vax politicians in the stars the States that died a few months back.

Lots of “Darwin awards winners” comments etc, if I remember no?

Don’t get me wrong. I think both are vile to do. But it’s a bit late to be growing a conscience now Daisy.

          1. Micko

You’re literally calling people lower than scum and subhuman above Daisy

            You seem so lost…

          2. Daisy Chainsaw

No. I pointed out the stupidity of people who die unnecessarily, but unlike antivaxxers, I took no joy from it.

          3. K.Cavan

Dolly is only calling the subhuman scum subhuman scum in an attempt to get them to mend their ways & become more like her.
The main thing is that she took no joy from it, Micko. None at all.
            Stop laughing, down the back…

          4. Daisy Chainsaw

The angry, basement dwelling incel has reared his confused and ugly head. Still hiding from the vax sticking squad?

          5. Nigel

This goes one step beyond those kinds of reactions since there is no evidence whatsoever that the death is vaccine related, so the purpose of those reactions, and this post, is to spread a lie by mocking someone’s death, giving them an extra dimension of calculation and cynicism.

          6. Nigel

The latest one you’re trying to force a connection with through implication, proximity and correlation. All superior to actual medical evidence, clearly. It’s like a bad parody of journalism.

        1. ANO

I was going to make that very comparison, this blog post is just as bad as those mocking the deaths of those who died from Covid after refusing to get vaccinated. I didn’t in the end as I didn’t want to muddy the water by mentioning Covid at all.

I’m not saying that either Nick or ‘Bodger’ are scum but this is a scummy blog post that both are responsible for.

          1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

Devil’s advocate here, but athletes are the WORST when not training, party hard they do playing catch up. Just look at boxers.

          2. ANO

            No, I didn’t.

If you want to make a post suggesting that it was then do so but embedding a snidey tweet under his death notice with no editorial comment is disgusting and pretty cowardly.

          3. Bodger

ANO, What did you think it might be when you heard? If you say drugs, cocaine presumably, isn’t that far more insensitive than suggesting vax-induced heart attack.

          4. V aka Frilly Keane

            Also a great Pisshead Bodger

Something else about retired elite athletes
athletes that train heavily – like endurance level
            for decades,
            is that when they retire
they don’t take a few years to train down

Steve Redgrave’s wife, Dr Ann Redgrave, said it could take him five years for his heart to scale back down from his level of fitness, like the level it had been geared up for over decades.

Somewhere, there is an a feature about him, training down, full time, over the 12 months after his retirement. Like a year long full time warm down.

          5. Ian - oG

I didn’t think it was the vax, but then I am not suffering from frequency illusion.

CBT therapy could help, as could growing some empathy.

          6. Broadbag

”did you not think immediately that it was the vax.”

Christ on a bike, you need to do a ‘great reset’ on your brain Bodger, this is mad stuff.

          7. ANO

I thought very little beyond retired sportsman dies of suspected heart attack before getting on with my day.

I’m not familiar with the gent so I never made any association with drug use – I think the comments below about ‘Bolivian marching powder’ and his drinking habits are just as crass as Nick’s blog post but you’re the one who sets the editorial bar, Bodger.

Again, the issue here for me is bunging in a sneery Tweet under a few lines about the man’s passing. A paragraph from Nick detailing his belief that this was a vaccine related death and explaining why would at least have lent the post some kind of weight.

          8. K.Cavan

            Eh, but you did, ANO.
Telling us you weren’t going to do something is not the same as not doing it, y’ken?

        2. Ian - oG

I distinctly remember writing a post about going onto the Hermann Cain Awards thread on reddit and being profoundly saddened by what I read.

And if I being bluntly honest, looking at some of the ‘recipients’ I found it very hard to empathise with them considering some of the vileness they posted but nonetheless I still found myself upset to see people dying needlessly.

This is a new low this week for Stormsheet.ie, between insinuations that Ukraine had it coming, the usual uneducated (well they do have their Diplomas in OooohTube)melts seeing Ukrainian nazis everywhere and the mild ”we are just asking questions balls-ox” starting to wonder why I bother with this Inforwars Light crap.

          1. K.Cavan

Ah, Ian, you distinctly remember being profoundly saddened by all those hurty words? I’m profoundly saddened that you were profoundly saddened.
Still, it’s better than dying from an experimental gene therapy injection that your government forced you to take, under threat of losing your job, your home & your future, wouldn’t you say?
            No, probably you wouldn’t.

          2. Nigel

In fairness going by Broadsheet standards of evidence, the hurty words are more likely to cause death than the vaccines.

        3. Fergalito

Eh, I try not to laugh at anyone Micko unless they’re being funny.

I agree, doesn’t matter what the agenda is, that type of tweet is the dregs.

          1. Micko

I agree, it is – we should wait for an autopsy to determine the cause of death before making assumptions. And laughing at their death because they don’t agree with us on a single issue is a terrible way to be.

But to ignore the fact that the vaccines HAVE killed some people is just as wrong.

And yes, of course ALL medicines carry side effects and risks – but we don’t mandate aspirin.

          2. benblack

Are you seriously comparing bilingualism to ladies with things and vice versa?

            I’m sure you are, dude.

  3. Grain of terror

Another dead from the vax at only 52. Disgraceful R.I.P
Thanks for the excellent reporting Nick Kelly, hopefully you can finally get a gig back at one of the legacy medias so the rest of Ireland can be educated to the true dangers of the vax.
Ps do you know which one he had or if he had the booster? Asking for a friend.

  4. Jo

52-year-old sports stars die all the time right?

    Vaccine permanently alters your DNA.

    It’s in there lurking.

    Anyway Ukraine right

    1. Nullzero

Is there potential for him to have been at the Bolivian marching powder? Not great for the ticker and possibly a “tonic” of choice for a gentleman of his vintage whilst in his Thai mansion?

    1. anti bot

Good man Bodger soq. everything has to be about Covid. RIP to what was a good website. surprised you didn’t slot in a ref to the trucks in Canada or Trump

      1. K.Cavan

You seem extraordinarily bothered that a news site would make any reference to current news stories, antibot. You understand that comes across as hard to believe, right? Almost as if you’re being wholly disingenuous? You don’t seem to be grasping the way this works & are instead concentrating on grasping for straws.
        Buck up, lad.

        1. Fearganainm

How’s the civil war in the National Party going? Any news? Will you be siding with the dog kicker faction or the shoe stealer’s faction?

You’ve been very hyper, at times almost manic, since the recent falling out. It must be depressing to think of a 0.7% first preference vote being split.

I guess sweeping to power will just have to wait for a while.

          1. K.Cavan

What’s the National Party, Ferg & why are you shoehorning references to them into a cricketer’s obit? Have we missed something?
Which faction of the FFFG party do you pledge your throth to, yourself, Ferg? Greenshirts or Blueshirts? Are you more of a Bill Gates guy or a Klaus Schwab guy? Bill & Klaus have decided to take FF to the vet’s to have them put down, sadly, so if you’re a FFer, I’d switch allegiances, forthwith. It’s easy, since neither has anything that could be called a principle or a policy beyond doing what they’re told by people who, like them, couldn’t give a toss about their electorate, because the eejits will vote them back in, matteradamn what they get up to. SF are, of course, a wholly-owned subsidiary of WEF. You don’t get close to the reins of power without Georgie Soros riding you. That’s why Mary Loo is so fat & has to be kept away from naked flames, Soros has been sitting on her face, farting, filling her up with methane.

          2. Fearganainm

            Amnesia again, is it?

You’ve forgotten the time when in response to a question – not directed at you – about what Philip ‘Dog kicker’ Dwyer might do you hopped in and answered with ‘We’. Were you just dreaming of being a National Party spokesperson then, or was it just a Freudian slip? You tick all the boxes to be that kind of person but it’s understandable if you’re reluctant to admit it. Anyway, the NP has been rent in twain and no doubt you’re hurting inside a little.

  5. TenPin Terry

How Australia could have done with him today out in Pakistan.
The hosts were 245-1 at stumps on the first day of the first test played there in 22 years.
    What a life he led.

  6. White Dove

Always liked Shane, was disappointed at his evolution from cool laid back guy to metrosexual vaccine proponent.

Not sure exactly why, but Liz Hurley’s exes do not fare well sadly. I think the one before Shane died by jumping out of a building. One tragic ex death is unfortunate, two is a little worrying. Stay safe Damian.

  7. TenPin Terry

Even though he was overweight and drank and smoked heavily and existed mainly on fast food 52 is still a young age for a man to die.
He was more of a sportsman than a high performance athlete and he played in an era when levels of fitness were far less important than who was getting the beers in after the game.
However why not wait until the post mortem results drop before delivering expert opinions on what might have caused the fatal heart attack ?

    1. K.Cavan

      Expert opinions, Terry?
Where do you reckon you saw them? You’ve taken the Strawman to the level of collosus, that one has its head in the clouds. What a spectacle!

  8. K.Cavan

A great cricketer, in fact I modelled my own unique slow method of fast bowling on his technique but not someone you’d describe as fit. His weight seesawed over the years & the blond highlights & a suspicion of cosmetic surgery made him look a bit like that vax-mad plumbing Nazi, you know the one.
Nobody has asked the important question though, were there any traces of rodent hair around the body, especially on the tongue & lips? If he just pretended to get ‘jected but was actually a ratlicker, Dolly can change tack & start her lil’ dance.

  9. Oro

I’d recommend watching Shane’s cameo appearance in Kath and Kim to anyone btw, he’s really great in it. Extremely funny. Poor Sharon!

“Gardaí probe alleged fraud incidents involving hockey star Catriona Carey”

Can we please ban women from hockey and money – for the love of men at least – that’s our territory, bird!

  10. V aka Frilly Keane

Ask the Broadsheet experts; Kinda thing
Since sudden death amongst athletes is a well practiced area of Broadsheet expertise

    Anthony Foley rip
2 Heineken Cup winners medals as Captain
    1 triple crown
Captained Ireland a few times and earned 60 something caps
So not your tag rugby summer evenings around Bushy Park

    Died, suddenly, 42, in France
    2016

    So what was the cause
2016, So François Hollande was President at the time
    If that helps

    Ta, V

Shane was a legend, a true Aussie, a player, a shagger of note, and a pisshead that would have kept up with Oliver Reed when he was in form, I genuinely mourn his passing as a top bloke.

Legends die all the time, as we all will. It is the frequency and deviation from the normal average mortality rates that at the bare minimum deserve a little enquiry and investigation.
