Local authorities can in the space of a week find 500 properties that may be repurposed to house Ukrainian refuges, yet could not find anything for the long term homeless is all you need to know.

It reminds me of the old saying about the man who wouldn’t wear glasses- that it was better to look good than see good. In other words, optics are way more important than doing the jobs they are well paid to do.

Loads of room in Broadsheet Towers according to the half-finished census form you left put on the kitchen counter, Bodger.

Barmy stuff, but the perfect excuse for keeping the cost of housing astronomically inflated – Brexit/Covid/Ukraine, the unholy trinity of get out of jail free cards for a useless government awash with landlords.

” Local authorities have identified approximately 500 properties that may be repurposed and used to house Ukrainian refugees.”

Can’t help wondering why these properties were never found during the ongoing social housing crisis but either way Ireland is sleepwalking into a disaster.
40,000 refugees by April will add 1% to the population, on top of the existing net immigration figures, and according to Varadkar ” it would have serious impacts on the education, health and housing systems ”
An expected 200,000 are expected to come to Ireland for an indefinite period of time and the government is relying on the generosity of people to put them up but won’t be offering help with the extra costs.
Good luck with that especially when the UK is offering £350 a month.
It’s alright telling the world how wonderful Ireland is but you need to have a plan and it’s quite clear at the moment this government doesn’t have one.
    Unsurprisingly.

Without sounding like a pure bast***
I am hearing of 100 thousand non EU refugees being given refuge here
A population of 5 million people with a homeless crises
We have a crises in out health system housing education and they can click their fingers and magically accommodate these people
As we are 5 million population compare that with Germany with a population 35 times our size
So that means Germany should be taking in 3.5 million
So basically if the EU takes in the flood of Ukrainian refugees by head of the population that means there will not be one person living in Ukraine
And who is going to pay for this ?
If we only treated our own people in the same manner we would not have families homeless or living in hotels

With FG incompetence we have sky high rents poor building numbers and now we add a 1% increase in population to all that. Is Leo and Martin magically now going to fix Health Housing ?? Great if they do but why until now . We’ve had 10 years of FG FF economic mismanagment which our young people will pay for for years.

From day one after the crash the bail out should not of gone to banks
Every mortgage should of been revalued at the worth of the property after the crash and adjusted accordingly in the ratio of 2.5% of the value of that home
Then the interest rates increased just like the old days before cheap money pre EURO
and the property value controlled by interest rises just like the old days
One bank should of been taken under government control so lending could continue and banks could not hold the nation to ransome
But no we continued the same policy of property used as a money making exercise and no one on an average industrial wage could afford one
In my parents day and my youth I could buy a three bedroom apartment in ranelagh on the average industrial wage at £20000 punts
I had a part time job and a flat mate and I was single
I could afford 18% interest on my earnings a car and a holiday abroad and enjoy some semblance of a social life
And of the billions given to bail out banks
All the property banks held was sold off for a pittance to vulture funds then tax policies changed so when they flogged it off they paid little tax
Now call that naive stupidity but at least people could afford a house today and we would not be facing the crises we had
And the banks would of been held account
Let’s face it from all the returns for the billions pumped in that raised our debt to €250 billion fom €55 billion
Little has been repaid off our national debt

I haven’t seen any analysis that it’s more than likely woman and children.
Those with younger children most likely won’t be able to go to the workforce due to childcare issues.
And what if the way ends… Can the husbands / fathers / brothers come over too? Families will want to reunite and live together.
I doubt many will go back as their homes are probably flattened or a better life is available here than in a country that’s needs to be rebuilt.

Putin sure is doing a fine job to destabilise Europe.

Can the husbands / fathers / brothers come over too?

Ukrainians now have the right to freely travel, to work, and claim benefits all over the EU, so to answer your question- yes they can.

So when government say that there will be 20 000- or what ever the made up figure is- they have no control over how many come here, and no control over how many spouses or others follow either.
