UUP Leader Doug Beattie
This quite remarkable. Doug Beattie was for a time the most popular leader in Northern Ireland.

Upper Bann is all to play for. Lots of speculation here in Magherafelt that Doug Beattie, UUP leader, could be in trouble.
The challenge is coming from Alliance’s Eoin Tennison. A gain west of the Bann would be a BIG win for Alliance. pic.twitter.com/Lu7yZ1TPkk

After watching the farce of the last few years maybe they might elect a Republican and unionist donkey
The problem with NI
is the paramilitaries never went away and it’s not the likes of NI politicians except those whose parties have history with either set of paramilitaries but those men and women of violence who still dream of their utopias
All it takes is a few thousand of them and it’s back to the old days
Personally I think the paramilitaries are way more a problem on the loyalist side than republican- the UDA (Ulster Drugs Association) in particular.
There are some fringe elements on the republican side too but SF is the main conduit these days, and they are acutely aware of their pubic persona- so they run a clean house. The loyalists on the other hand have no political party accountability, so have no such constraints on what they get up to.
The DUP and Loyalist gangs are one and the same.
