It’s the image that took the world’s breath away.

There they sit, gathered in the ‘situation room’ watching the horror unfold. Why do we have to see photos of people watching this obscenity? Have we not evolved or are we just a modern version of the christians and the lions? You can be sure this is the image that will inflame the middle east and make the world a more dangerous place, etc., etc.

After yesterday’s post concerning the sale of Oswald Mosley’s old home in Fermoy, County Cork comes this des res fit for a fascist.

You want lebensraum? We’ve got lebensraum.

Locals believed this art deco house had a swastika on the roof – it doesn’t but a Nazi plot was hatched here

ONE OF THE most unusual homes built in 20th century Ireland – a detached house at 245 Templeogue Road, Dublin, with an amazing history – is for sale for €1.25 million, through DNG Terenure.

The house, then called Konstanz – after the southern German town on the shores of Lake Constance – was owned by Stephen Carroll Held. The businessman, who was born to an Irish woman and adopted by a German man, acted as a go-between, helping the IRA to liaise with the Nazi regime in Berlin. He told gardaí that the stash in the guest bedroom belonged to a lodger but he was promptly nicked and sentenced to five years “penal servitude”.

But there had been a lodger – who’d fled. Hermann Goertz, a German SS officer, had been staying in what he’d hoped was a “safe house”. He had arrived in Ireland a few weeks earlier, by parachuting into Ballivor, Co Meath (as one does). His mission impossible? To progress wacky plans for an IRA-backed Nazi invasion of Ireland with the aim of attacking Britain through Northern Ireland.

According to The Phoenix, out today:

“Harney’s lawyers (solicitors Vincent & Beatty) demanded a cool €1 million in damages and the last 12 months has seen a game of poker between her team and station owner Denis O’Brien’s lawyer, Paul Meagher, with Meagher having little in his hand.

O’Brien even tried to settle personally with Harney but was rebuffed.”

She can put the settlement with her tax-free lump sum of €159,000, pension lump sum of €160,000 and pensions totalling €121,000.

The Newstalk apology (includes Nell’s expensive words).

Good. Then we’ll begin.

David McSavage was a guest on Vincent Browne’s Friday Late on TV3 last night, sharing an uneasy sofa with newly-elected senators, John Crown (Ind), Kathryn Reilly (SF), Catherine Noone (FG) and Susan O’Keefe (Labour).

It was a bitter, teacher-baiting, bile-ridden, panel-teasing bravura performance from the newly blonde comic. Chompsky was spotted visibly shaking with laughter.

The Irish Twittersphere, however…

Harsh? Fair?

You decide.

Nat calls it ‘the dumped person’s charter’.

It means people who are ‘co-habitating’ have now many of the same rights as people who are married.

Along with the more frequent and better sex, obviously.
