Ireland to cease deliveries of AZ, Janssen vaccines – Reid (RTE, August 15)

Update:

A letter from Dr Lucy Jessop of the HSE’s National Immunisation Office, which was sent on August 11th, said that any unused or expired AstraZeneca or Janssen vaccines should be returned and could be removed from fridges.

“As the Janssen Covid-19 vaccine single dose programme is now nearing completion, and Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) second dose vaccines have now nearly all been administered, any residual vaccines which are not required to complete cohorts should be returned to national cold chain service.

“These vaccines can be removed from the fridge and prepared for return, but they must be retained in a secure area that can only be accessed by appropriate personnel.”

Despite the initial 36 Irish citizens all being evacuated, a further 60 citizens have made contact with Irish authorities along with 15 Afghan citizens with Irish residency.

That 75 are being told to stay where they are for now, Mr Coveney said.

However, Mr Coveney told RTÉ Morning Ireland that it would not have been possible to have boots on the ground sooner.

“That is one of the answers we don’t have.

“All I can say is that we made decisions on the basis of the evidence we had and the advice that we had at any given time over the last 10 days was very clear that the arrangements we had in place in terms of partnerships on the ground with other countries were working on just getting people out.

“The situation is everything that I’ve seen in the media became much more complicated. In the last three or four days in particular, and much more dangerous, and it was about time that I decided that we needed to get people on the ground.

“And we managed to put in place the capacity to do that, because we thought it would add value in terms of taking the opportunities that will present themselves to get people out.

“And so we sent 11 people into a very dangerous situation.

“The most difficult task was to get people from the streets of Kabul into the airport, and we had then fantastic supports to get them onto planes, whether that was France, whether it was Finland in recent days, Germany, the Netherlands, UK have also been really really supportive in terms of everything we’ve been trying to do.”

Dr Laurentiu Stefan, Romanian ambassador to Ireland, visits the Citywest vaccination centre  to monitor the distribution of 700,000 Pfizer/BioNtech Covid-19 vaccines recently purchased from Romania.

The deal was “a show of solidarity” with the Irish people, where the uptake of vaccination has been much higher than in Romania, according to Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

A petition to reinstate Derry Dr Anne McCloskey, who was suspended from practising medicine after posting a video critical of the Covid vaccines has reached over 5,000 signatures.

The Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) suspended Dr McCloskey and banned her from working for all health and social care services after Dr McCloskey said she was “distraught” by the number of young people “damaged” by “unlicensed and unapproved” vaccines.

She said many young people have been “coerced, bribed or bullied” into being vaccinated and that vaccines are “malevolent”.
