Italian officials have introduced €100 fines for all people aged over 50 years – both Italian citizens and foreigners living in the country – who have not received a Covid-19 vaccine. Additionally, all employees aged over 50 will require a Super Green Pass in order to access their workplace starting from February 15.

Gulp.

Refusal or reluctance to have a Covid-19 vaccine may be linked to traumatic events in childhood, such as parents separating, neglect, or physical, verbal and sexual abuse, new research suggests.

Those who suffer in childhood are also least likely to trust official NHS coronavirus information, follow the rules of restrictions or wear masks during the pandemic, public health experts found.

Last Friday’s The Late Late Show

This morning.

Via Extra.ie:

RTÉ received one formal compliant and multiple calls providing ‘negative feedback’ for the controversial opening to Fridays episode of The Late Late Show.

In a bizzare decision to mark the occasion, Ryan Tubridy emerged to ‘Ireland’s Call’ while the audience, who were wearing masks, sang along and waved green flags…

…the complaints didn’t stick to online memes, as RTE confirmed that an official complaint was made and 11 members of the public rang the broadcaster to give their opinion on the opening which united the nation in fury.

Why is the cabinet still using Dublin Castle (former seat of British colonial rule) instead of Leinster House  for meetings now the ’emergency’ is over?

The handover of Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Dublin 4.

Janet writes:

Tomorrow, 100 years ago, Beggars Bush Barracks, where the National Print Museum is located, became the first military barracks to be handed over to the new National Army by the departing British forces. Lively crowds gathered to observe the National Army detachment as it marched from the Phoenix Park to Beggars Bush. Read a contemporaneous account from The Irish Times here.

Was it for this?

Minister for Education Norma Foley will bring proposals to the Cabinet on this year’s Leaving Certificate, which recommend against providing a hybrid exam option.

It is being proposed that Leaving Cert students will sit a written exam, which includes additional elements of choice.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan described the proposals for a written Leaving Certificate as “fairer option” for students.

Speaking on his way into the Cabinet meeting, he said that accredited grades would not be possible this year.

Asked about Sinn Féin’s description of the proposal as “desperate“, Mr Ryan said that the alternative would have necessitated school profiling, an approach, he said, which would have been a desperate solution.

Update:

Social Democrats Education Spokesperson Gary Gannon said:

“This year’s Leaving Cert students have suffered two years of upheaval and chaos because of covid. There have been lengthy school closures and persistent absences, of both students and teachers, due to illness caused by covid and the requirement to self-isolate. We must also acknowledge the incredible stress, and anxiety, that students have been under as a consequence of covid.

“This year is not a normal year, so we cannot have a ‘normal’ Leaving Cert. The lived experience of Leaving Cert students, throughout these unprecedented two years, must be acknowledged by Minister for Education Norma Foley. It cannot be business as usual – simply because that makes life easier for the Minister and her Department.”

The 96FM Opinion Line with PJ Coogan

Fergal Barry writes:

This morning PJ spoke to Roy Long (top left) , a popular dog trainer in Carrigaline.

Roy explains that even though a lot of people are using log cabins on family property to get through the housing crisis, it’s very risky and explains how he got caught out.

Log cabins are very pervasive and Roy calls on the government to take account of the difficulty of getting accommodation and help people in trouble over their cabins…
