The Pox Men – Apocalypse Anois

A new doom-laden song with human/horse-based video from Donegal-based self-styled ‘Proto- Psychedelic–Celtic–Punk–Folk’-sters.

Bill Hazzard writes:

We went the whole way to Dublin for this video…

Last night.

The Late Late Show.

A Long-overdue tribute to Shane MacGowan was punctuated by performances – some controversial – of Shane’s music by sleb fans.

Such as…

Ah here.

How was it for you?

Meanwhile…

The Late Late Show tribute to the singer took place in a mock bar complete with pints of stout.

Following the segment, Alcohol Action Ireland said it was regrettable the broadcaster would seek to normalise the impact of alcohol on people and reinforce cultural stereotypes.

RTÉ said the barroom setting was chosen as “such locations were for Shane’s musical career and a backdrop to his music and lyrics.”

Hic.

Singer and guitarist Reuben Teskey is joined by Stu Daly on bass; Sam Fitzpatrick on keyboards; Simon King on drums; and Ciaran Parnell on guitar.

Island Winter follows on from their 4-song EP Irish Summer in 2017 and their debut album Collected Fiction in 2016.

The Lost Brothers – Seven Days Before Christmas

A week is a long time in Christmas songs.

This is another tune from the new festive EP by Irish roots duo Mark McCausland (top right) and Oisin Leech (top left) aka The Lost Brothers.

We’re digging the Johnny Cash vibes here as the lads keep it country.

Look out for their new album in February.

Nick says: Brothers are doing it for themselves.

The Lost Brothers

Last week, with a Golden Discs voucher worth a festive €25 on offer, I asked YOU to name your favourite Xmas choon and why.

You answered in your tens.

But there could be only one winner.

Third Place:

Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis by Tom Waits

Brother Barnabas writes:

Few others can find the beauty in the sordid like he can – and isn’t that what christmas is all about?

Runner up:

River by Joni Mitchell

Milly Vanilly Strikes Again writes:

There’s something melancholic and nostalgic and lovely about this song which sums up Christmas to me in a way few other Christmas songs do. It also happens to be my Xmas party piece after a few drinks, but we’ll say no more on that.

Winner:

When The Thames Froze by Smith & Burrows.

Spud writes:

I love all the old classics I grew up with and the sense of nostalgia they give me, but no other ‘new’ song has that effect on me as this one. Genuinely get the shivers and Christmas feels listening to it.

Thanks all.

Kiruu – Nyumbani

Anyone for fire spinning?

Then feast your eyes on Fergus Murtagh‘s video for Dublin-based East African singer Kiruu’s new single.

The title means ‘home’ in Swahili and the video was shot in Deer Park and various other locations in Dublin.

Kiruu’s new album Super Feo Express has been compared to other “world music” artists such as Manu Chao and Paul Simon.

Joining Kiruu in his band are Cote Calmet on drums and Barry Donohue on bass.

Nick says: Fire walk with me.
