Dashoda – In Between

The debut single by Wexford-born musician Gavin MacDermott (top) is a melodic blast of introspective electro pop with a mandolin solo proudly peeking out from beneath the beats.

The video by Conor Donoghue was shot in Dublin’s St Anne’s Park (Gavin’s granny used to live around the corner).

Gavin says:

“I was inspired by the onset of adulthood.”

Nick says: It’s a walk in the park.

Goodtime John – Don’t Exist

Goodtime John aka John Cowhie has been beavering away doing his own thing for many years and it’s good to see he can still hold his own.

Taken from his new mini album Beauty & Chaos, Don’t Exist is a breezy stroll through a Laurel Canyon of the mind and the video is set in a veritable octopus’ garden. Lobsters ahoy!

Nick says: Good times.

Finnian – Where We Go

If you’re looking for that peaceful easy feeling of lazy midsummer then the second single from Dundalk singer/songwriter Finnian is a good place to start.

Recalling the chilled 70s vibes of Bread, Where We Go is from his forthcoming album Under The Influence.

The video is a nicely shot freewheeling evocation of the promise of romance.

Nick says: Sounds like summer

The Irish music industry was rocked by the death of Joe Nicholson earlier this year.

Long synonymous with Whelan’s (having worked as its gatekeeper for many years), Joe will be remembered at a special charity gig in his honour at the Wexford Street venue this Monday.

The show will feature Paddy Casey, Mundy, Declan O’Rourke, Ham Sandwich and very special guests.

No doubt Joe’s ghost will be hovering around the box office checking the guest list!

Nick says: There’s no show like a Joe show.

Montauk Hotel – White Billboards

The new single from this charming Irish indie guitar quartet reflects on a time when the Don Drapers of this world ruled the roost.

The inspired use of retro TV ads shows just how much societal attitudes have changed in the intervening years.

Aoife, Shell, Karima and Claudia are on fine form here and the latter directed, produced and edited the promo.

Nick says: No flipping.

Jimmy’s Cousin – Astor & 8th

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing. Happily, Jimmy’s Cousin – the alter ego of Ireland-born, American-based (since 1990) Ian Dodson – swings to beat the big band.

This is the second single from his jazz/pop debut album Waxwings and the video finds JC going for a walk across the rooftops of New York, New York.

A classy love letter to Manhattan with a suitably panoramic promo? Swell.

Nick says: Another Fairytale of New York.

This afternoon.
