Emma Langford – Goodbye Hawaii

There’s a brilliant moment in Shane Serrano‘s video (above) for Emma’s first single from her forthcoming second album when it switches, like Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight In Paris‘, from the present day to another bygone era.

It’s a kind of magic, just like the Limerick singer’s velvety voice which gives this breezy jazz-pop ditty that Friday feeling.

Nick says: Aloha goodbye.

Joy Division – Day Of The Lords

Feargal Ward writes:

Myself and the writer/filmmaker Adrian Duncan were asked to make a music video by New Order for one of Joy Division’s tracks from the Unknown Pleasures album (40 year anniversary). The video (above) was just released.

We are both based in Berlin and were drawn to that city’s propensity for collapsing regimes as part of our response to this incredible piece of music...

In fairness.

Bill Callahan

One of the most eagerly awaited shows of the year is undoubtedly Bill Callahan in Dublin’s Vicar Street on September 29.

The artist formerly known as Smog and later [Smog] is considered one of the finest songwriters of his generation and fans will be itching to hear songs from his new double album Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest up close and personal.

To be in with a chance to win two tickets to the show simply tell us your favourite song by Smog or Bill Callahan and why.

Lines close at 2.30pm.

Nick says: Good luck!

Mick Flannery – Come Find Me

The new single from the prolific Cork singer/songwriter is a punchy dance remix by ESCQ (Eric Straube and Chris Qualls) of a song from Mick’s recent self-titled album.

The video swoops through modern cities and ancient forests but Mick’s gritty voice is still the star of the show.

You can catch him live at Limerick Dolan’s Warehouse on July 19.

Nick says: An offer I can’t refuse.

Explosions In The Sky

Last week, with a pair of tickets to see Explosions in the Sky at Vicar Street on offer, I asked YOU to name your favourite-ever gig at the Wexford Street venue.

You answered in your tens.

But there could be only one winner.

Broadsheet reader ‘Hammy’ secured the tix with this decisive entry:

My favourite gig at Vicar Street was ‘The Tallest Man On Earth [October 2015] – Not the tallest man on earth by any stretch but despite the false advertising was great live.

The tickets  were for my girlfriend, who is now my wife – our ceremony started with us walking down the aisle together with Landing Cliffs by Explosions in the Sky playing.’

Thanks all.

Villagers – Summer’s Song

Conor O’Brien and the gang return with a mellow ode to the lazy, hazy days of summer. With any luck this should be a crossover radio hit.

The groovy animated video was directed by Joseph May and Patricio Bauza.

Villagers play Dublin Iveagh Gardens on Friday; Galway Arts Festival, July 18; and Cork Cyprus Avenue, July 19.

Nick says: Let’s hear it for the beach boy!

They don’t normally do this.

Just some of the items left behind by 1980s-loving ‘revellers’ attending the Forever Young Festival in Palmerston House, Naas, County Kildare.

No bumbags then?

Meanwhile, Speedy, who won a pair of Nick’s Free Tixto the festival, writes:

Thanks to everyone there at Broadsheet, Nick Kelly, Karen & all at Forever Young for a fantastic weekend of festivalling. The crowd, the line up, the outfits & the atmosphere were amazing but the free tickets were best of all! Roll on Forever Young 2020, can’t wait to do it all again. Thanks a million!
