Last week, with a €20 Currys PC World voucher redeemable in any Currys store on offer, I asked you to name your favorite song from the past that sounds like it could be from the future.
You answered in your dozens.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
O Superman by Laurie Anderson.
Andy Pipkin writes:
“Was from the future years ago (1982) and still is now, Laurie Anderson’s brilliant O Superman. Enjoy.”
Runner-up:
The first Doctor Who theme.
Scottser writes:
“It has to be the Doctor Who theme tune, made by Delia Derbyshire.”
Winner:
Sexy Boy by Air
Nicorigo writes:
“Nothing says future more than the synths, drum machines and other modulations of the spacey French electronica duet’s first ever single.”
Edgar Wright’s music documentary captures the art-pop pioneers at an improbable late career high, as well as recounting the story of how they got there, asking why they are not as celebrated as they deserve to be, and finding out how they became your favourite band’s favourite band.
Featuring Beck, Vince Clarke and Andy Bell of Erasure, Chris Difford of Squeeze, Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Nick Rhodes and John Taylor of Duran Duran, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert of New Order, Nick Heyward, Bjork, Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bernard Butler, Martyn Ware of The Human League/Heaven 17, Roddy Bottum of Faith No More, Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Gos, Steve Jones of Sex Pistols, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, Mike Myers, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, as well as producers such as Todd Rundgren, Muff Winwood, Tony Visconti, Giorgio Moroder and James Lowe….
Cork alt.pop crooner Rushes (top) takes a stroll near his native Skibbereen, county Cork and goes for a swim in his suit (a swim-suit?) in the video for the new single from his Glowchild album.
Rushes writes:
“I think the video depicts the narrative of the track: you’ve cut a connection but now you’re on your own. It’s like wearing the suit and yet having nowhere to go. I’m wearing my dad’s old suit, I found in the attic, but it felt right”.
The promo was filmed by Eddie O’Flaherty and Stephanie Naughter and edited by Rushes.
Calling all Retro ’90s synth pop fans: Budding Irish star Pure Grand aka Luke Faulkner (top) channels Erasure and The Lightning Seeds in his new single which bounces along joyously as it tells the tale of a tentative romance.
Pure Grand has also created visuals for fellow Irish LGBTQ acts Jack Rua and Babylamb and last December directed, shot and edited CMAT’s Christmas special livestream.
“In fact it feels like it’s safe to produce an event where everybody is tested. Literally everybody. The staff, the workers, the security, the bar staff, the food traders, as well as the festival goers themselves.”
The former Microdisney and Fatima Mansions frontman (top) has teamed up with virtuoso visual artist and singer Marry Waterson – daughter of Lal Waterson and niece of Norma; the First Family of English folk music, so musical royalty.
Marry’s atmospheric video is the perfect accompaniment to Cathal’s slinky jazz ballad that is the best single so far released from the new album Song Of Co-Aklan.
