Touted as this year’s District 9. Why two good-looking Americans would wander through an area teeming with rampant alien life isn’t explained. But expect running and screaming and then some more running. There’s probably going to be some tentacled horrors as well. There always is.

So, nine years after singing on the soundtrack for Moulin Rouge, Christina Aguilera is finally in a film about burlesque. Unless there’s a surprise alien attack halfway through the film, the trailer tells us what we need to know – a small town girl goes to the bright lights of LA and, after some minor trials and tribulations, makes it big. Cher plays the mentor roll and, at 64, is better preserved than some screen vampire queens. Maybe that’s the twist – she stays young by bathing in the blood of unsuccessful dancers.

Machete started off as one of the fake trailers between the Grindhouse double bill a few years ago. As happens with these things, it created enough buzz to get greenlit and become a full (and by the looks of it, utterly bonkers) feature in its own right.
