What you may need to know:

1. A group of outlaws are left stranded by a blizzard in post-Civil War Wyoming.

2. Quentin Tarantino’s second western in a row. He’s supposed to be retiring after another two movies, but he does tend to talk himself up.

3. A draft of this script was leaked back in January 2014. Tarantino shelved production and filed a lawsuit against Gawker. He shut their butts down.

4.
This is the sixth collaboration between Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson.

5.
No Christoph Waltz? Shame.

6.
Broadsheet prognosis: There will be blood. And lots of bad-tempered junket interviews.

Release Date: January 8, 2016.

What you may need to know:

1.
Spike Lee’s modern day adaption of the ancient Greek play Lysistrata by Aristophanes.

2.
Highbrow. Fo shizzle.

3. With Samuel L. Jackson as the Greek Chorus and John Cusack as the Token White Dude.

4.
Chicago City Hall wasn’t thrilled with the negative attention this production brought to the area. Lee and the Mayor aren’t exactly BFFs.

5.
@2:21 – Pull ‘em up or buy a belt, fool.

6.
Broadsheet prognosis: Not feeling it.

Release Date:
December 4 (Amazon Prime).

By the Sea

What you may need to know:

1. What just happened?

2. Mrs. Angelina Jolie Pitt directs her hubby in this chronicle of a failing marriage.

3. A belated bit of schadenfreude for Jennifer Aniston.

4. That’s the bulk of Ange’s Inside the Actors Studio showreel sorted then.

5. It looks like she’s been binge-watching Michelangelo Antonioni.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: A neorealist take on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)

Release Date: December 11.

Sherlock

What you may need to know:

1. Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) go back to their 19th century roots for this one-off special.

2. This is the first episode of the Steven Moffat era not based on one of Arthur Conan Dolyle’s stories.

3. Pipes, bowler hats and elaborately waxed facial hair… Victorian London or Thursday afternoon in the Fumbally?

4. Fans will have a bit of a wait for the fourth series. Shooting won’t start until next spring with the first episode probably screening in January 2017.

5. Yes it’s very good, but 3 episodes every 2 years? They’re not exactly killing themselves, are they?

6. That might be slightly unfair, what with Cumberbatch‘s and Freeman’s workload.

7. Broadsheet prognosis: Nothing says New Year like Sherlock. Except Hootenanny.

Release Date: January 1, 2016 (BBC)

What you may need to know:

1. The first fruits of Adam Sandler’s exclusive deal with Netflix.

2. The good news is that it keeps Sandler out of the cinemas.

3. The bad news is that there are another three movies on the way.

4. That cast list is the cinematic equivalent of 100 monkeys throwing faeces at a wall.

5. Around a dozen Native American actors walked off set back in April. They weren’t cool with playing characters called “Beaver Breath” and “Wears No Bra.”

6. Rose McGowan can relate.

7. Broadsheet prognosis: A Happy Madison production. *Shudder*

Release Date: December 11 (Netflix).

What you may need to know:

1. After a break of 14 years, Chris Carter brings Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) back together for a short run miniseries.

2. These six episodes will combine wider X-Files mythology with old school monster-of-the-week stuff.

3. And will presumably address why the Earth wasn’t colonised back in 2012.

4. There is absolutely no truth to the rumour that “Cigarette-Smoking Man” is now a vaper.

5. With TFI Friday back on the box and more Twin Peaks in the works, the 90s revival is definitely on. B*witched are probably putting a new album together as we speak.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: Just don’t mention that second movie.

Release Date: January 24, 2016 (Fox).

What you may need to know:

1. For the day that’s in it. This documentary has new interviews with Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis.

2. No Tom Wilson? Shame.

3. Or Crispin Glover? Probably best.

4. Everyone knows that Eric Stoltz was sacked after five weeks of filming, but a lesser-known bit of trivia is that Ralph Macchio and Johnny Depp were also considered for the part of Marty.

5. There will be one-off screenings of Back to the Future II (1989) at various cinemas today.

6. Whisper it… It wasn’t great.

7. Broadsheet prognosis: Still waiting for Jaws 19.

Release Date: Today (Netflix).

Freaks of Nature

What you may need to know:

1. “In a world…” *cough* sorry…Horror comedy with humans, vampires, zombies and an alien invasion.

2. Which would explain the previous working title of ‘The Kitchen Sink‘.

3. Based on a true story.

4. Love that poster. It brings back memories of renting Escape from New York (1981) from the newsagents back in 1985.

5.
There’s another trailer due tonight for something called The Force Awakens (2015), but there’s no zombies in that.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: No werewolves? Pffft.

Release Date:
October 30 (USA).

Fargo 2

What you may need to know:

1. State Trooper Lou Solverson (Patrick Wilson) investigates a triple homicide in Sioux Falls, Minnesota in 1979.

2. This is the same case mentioned by Lou Solverson (Keith Carradine) in season 1. Meta.

3. In addition to a stellar cast (Kirsten Dunst, Ted Danson, Meth Damon), season 2 also has an organised crime syndicate, UFOs and Bruce Campbell as Ronald Reagan. Well, okay then.

4. No Lorne Malvo though. Sadface.

5. In terms of murders per capita, Fargo has to be up there with Midsomer. Or Cabot Cove.

6. That story about Prince appearing in the movie? Not true.

7. Broadsheet prognosis: Even better than the first season.

Release Date: October 19 (Channel 4).

3. Sam Riley will be doing the whole tortured wet puffy shirt thing.

4. The previous adaption of Seth Grahame-Smith’s other mashup, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2010) didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

5. Proving that a movie needs more than a snappy title.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of braaaaiins.”

Release Date: 12 February 2016.
