hailceaser

What you may need to know:

1. Studio fixer Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) finds himself in a tight spot when Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), the star of a big-budget prestige picture is kidnapped (no funny stuff).

2. The Coen brothers track record in comedy has been a bit patchy since Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? back in 2000.

3. Although Intolerable Cruelty (2003) is a guilty pleasure.

4. Joel and Ethan seem to have developed an unhealthy obsession with Clooney’s teeth.

5. They are lovely teeth, in fairness.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: Epic hail.

Release Date: February 26, 2016.

What you may need to know:

1. A horror with a happy ending.

2. Between this and All American Bikini Car Wash, it must be awards season.

3. No, it’s not real.

4. Although it does seem like the sort of thing that Kevin Smith would be all over.

5. I predict a Kickstarter campaign.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: A load of w*nk.

Release Date: The 12th of Never.

Leftovers 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtsRBMVebsg

What you may need to know:

1. Where to start? Basically, an unexplained event has caused 2% of the population to disappear and everyone else loses it.

2. New season, new location. Season 2 is set in a town with zero disappearances.

3. Most of season 1’s cast have gone as well, but carryovers include Mr. Jennifer Aniston, Liv Tyler and Christopher Eccleston (making this one of the few series where he hasn’t been killed off in the first couple of episodes).

4. No sign of the Guilty Remnant yet. They’re probably on a stationary run.

5. Unrelentingly bleak and seriously depressing, The Leftovers is a very hard sell. Also, the presence of Lost (2004-10) showrunner Damon Lindelof has left many understandably wary of signing up to another open-ended mystery.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: As grim as a week in Holyhead.

When: Mondays (Sky Atlantic).

Bikini Car Wash

What you may need to know:

1. Ah here.

2.
“Actors.” Pretending to say and do things for 90 minutes. That’s a movie, right?

3. Somebody somewhere paid for this.

4. The Martian is superb, by the way.

5. And how good was last night’s This is England ’90 finale?

6. Broadsheet prognosis: Kill it. Kill it with fire.

Release Date: October 6 (VOD).

What you may need to know:

1. An erratic, drug-using chef tries to redeem himself at a top London restaurant.

2. Bradley Cooper desperately tries to make cooking sexy. I guess if anyone can…

3. JobBridge explained @0:40.

4. “If you try to start a new restaurant there will be at least a dozen people who will try to have you killed.” Really? Seems a bit harsh.

5. This needs a talking rat.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: Soggy bottomed.

Release Date:
November 6.

Green Inferno Poster

What you may need to know:

1. A group of idealistic student activists travel to the Amazon and are captured by a tribe of cannibalistic natives.

2. Director Eli Roth does for Peru’s tourism industry as Hostel (2005) did for the Czech Republic’s.

3. Roth is the very definition of a Marmite filmmaker. Some would consider him as a master of the genre, others as a dumbbell hack. I hate Marmite.

4. This has been doing the festival rounds since September 2013. There’s no sign of an official release date, but The Green Inferno will screen at the IFI’s Horrorthon in October.

5. FYI, “The Green Inferno” was the name of the film-within-a-film in Ruggero Deodato’s light hearted romp, Cannibal Holocaust (1980).

6. Broadsheet prognosis: Tastes like chicken.

Release Date: October (Limited release).

Queen of Ireland

What you may need to know:

1. Documentary following Rory O’Neill/Panti Bliss through a tumultuous year that included Pantigate, the seminal “Noble Call” speech at the Abbey, and the historic vote on Marriage Equality.

2. With contributions from O’Neill’s parents, David Norris and Una Mullally (who still rocks).

3. Irish production company Blinder Films collected €50,000 through crowdsourcing. Just think what they could have done with €85,000.

4. The soundtrack includes classics such as Troublesome Waters, Talk Shows on Mute and IONA Want To Be With You.

5. With a bit of luck, we may finally discover how a lad from rural Mayo ended up with that vexing American twang.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: Team Panti 4 life, yo.

Release Date: October 21.

What you may need to know:

1. This whole financial crash malarkey was spotted by a few shrewd financiers who in turn made a killing off it. Ahem David McWilliams.

2. From the book of the same name by investment banker turned author, Michael Lewis.

3. Doesn’t it look like a trailer for a heist movie?

4. The book was a bestseller but it’s hard to see if there will be enough dramatisation to keep a film going. For a great film about the crash check out Margin Call (2011).

5. Brad Pitt got an Oscar nod for starring in another of Lewis’ tomes, Moneyball (2011).  Lewis also wrote The Blind Side (2009) which earned Sandra Bullock a gong. Will Lewis have the Midas touch again? Steve Carrell, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and Melissa Leo all hope so.

6. Pitt is also producing this one with Adam McKay of Anchorman (2004) fame scripting. Classy.

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: A kick in the money balls.

Release Date: December 11, 2015

thewalk

What you may need to know:

1. Unhinged French fella walks on a wire between the Twin Towers for an hour.

2. It’s a dramatisation of the true story of French acrobat Philippe Petit, subject of the Oscar-winning documentary Man on Wire (2008).

3. Spoilers! CBS news lets us know how it all ended.

4. Joseph Gordon Levitt may feel he struggled with that French accent but I can assure him he did.

5. Levitt was reminded of his  fame in 2013 by some paparazzi and he made a little movie about it.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: You want Freedom Tower fries with that?

Release Date:  October 2, 2015

junglebook

What you may need to know:

1. Jon Favreau directs a live action remake of the Disney classic.

2. We already had a well-received live-action version with Jason Scott Lee back in 1994.

3. And Andy Serkis is also shooting a version for Warner Bros, due in 2017. Bet he plays a monkey.

4. Christopher Walken voices King Louie. “King of the Swingers” needs more cowbell.

5. Not sure about Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, though.

6. Broadsheet prognosis: REMAKE ALL THE MOVIES!!!
