A good friend of mine Kevin Downey from Belfast is cycling around the world for the charity Depaul. He is nearly 1 year in and is currently tackling the harsh Alaskan terrain. He is on an amazing adventure and for such a worthwhile cause.

He began his journey from South East London on a fully laden bike with only his guitar for company. The ongoing cycle will see him circumnavigate the globe, tackling some of the harshest climates on the toughest of terrain. Living on a shoestring, it will be the generosity of locals and calculated risks that will see back in his hometown of Belfast in time for Christmas 2014.

Whilst he is on the move, you can also enjoy his new EP ‘Across the Border’. In return, he asks visitors to make a small donation online to his chosen charity Depaul.

A friend of mine Donal has undertaken a cycle across Europe to raise money and awareness for Acquired Brain Injury Ireland. The cycle itself is totally self funded, so all money raised is going straight to ABII.

He’s been on the road for less than a week now, and he is keeping a blog of his experience.

It would be great if you could maybe share it, and see can we get him some more followers.

In a nutshell, Adtruism is a social tech initiative that lets bloggers and website owners raise money for the causes they care about without spending any of their own money.

They can go on to the Adtruism website, select a cause they’d like to help such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation or UNICEF, then select a widget, place it on their website and then advertisers pay to display their advert through the widget. All the revenue then goes to the cause they’ve selected.

But who are you?

All of us working on the project have just graduated or are still in college so we really are all doing it because we think it’s important that our generation isn’t just a bunch of slacktivists mindlessly liking things like Kony2012 and that if they are able to do something about a cause, even if it’s just something small, that they do it.

We are attempting to Break the World Record for the longest parade of Audi’s in convoy in the world. The current record is held in Germany and is 282 Audi’s that travelled successfully for 3 kms, maintaining no more that a 2 car length gap between each Audi.

We have a 9km route picked out around close to the dealership and on Sunday 16th will intend to break this. We have chosen 4 charities one to represent each of the “4 rings of Audi” and all monies raised will be divided 4 ways between each charity.

 

The four charities are

Temple Street Children’s Hospital
Respect
Waterford Hospice Movement
Solas Centre – Cancer Respite for the South East.

A six year old Cork girl is to sacrifice 12 inches of blonde hair in order to help her sister, who has autism, to get an assistance dog.

In a gesture reminiscent of a scene from Little Women, Lauren O’Mahony will cut off her long blonde hair in order to raise funds for Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland (AADI) this May. Her five year old sister Amy has been diagnosed with autism and has been on a waiting list for an assistance dog for 10 months. She could be waiting up to three years before a dog is available for placement.

 Mmf.

This year’s NUIM Galway Cycle , in aid of the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation,  is currently taking place .

Which means high winds, moist lycra and some nasty chafing.

You can track their progress on Endomondo or donate a soggy fiver to the cause.
