Climate change pre-crimes?

Mais oui.

The activists, ranging in age from 20 to 72, are all involved in the group Stop Climate Chaos, an umbrella group comprised of 28 environmental groups including Friends of the Earth, Trócaire, An Taisce, Concern and Christian Aid.

An officer with the French border police in Cherbourg told The Irish Times the group had been stopped under the state-of-emergency legislation which currently banned demonstrations in France.

Speaking before their bus had been let through, the officer said it was expected the group would be returned to Ireland on Thursday evening as they were considered “likely to trouble public order in France”.

Asked how they knew about the group, the officer replied: “We were advised by the Irish authorities.”

The border police later confirmed the position had changed and the bus was being allowed to proceed but declined to comment on the reason why.

Mark Malone writes:

So Irish authorities forewarned French police about visiting climate change campaigners heading to COP21. Pretty much puts the question of political policing to bed.

Worried about climate change?

Enjoy reading?

Jack Byrne writes:

I have written a short climate change novel which I’d like to give free to Broadsheet users. to coincide with the fallout from the climate conference in Paris.

The novel is linked by a series of short stories that attempt to portray what each increase of global warming will mean to us as a species.

These tales for the journey during the rest of this century, based on the science, will assist us in imagining the unimaginable and maybe will move us to act to avert the worst effects.
This is not a promotional stunt, I’ve no interest in making money out of this work, I’d just like to offer it to interested readers.

Days before the start of the COP21 Global Summit in Paris, 600 posters by 82 artists from 19 countries were placed behind glass at bus stops around the city.

The wheeze – subverting actual posters by the conference’s rather smug corporate sponsors, including Air France, Dow Chemicals and GDF Suez (Engie) – was organised by UK based anti-corporate collective Brandalism.
