We are delighted to announce the adoption of one of our long-term lodgers after a seven year wait to find his perfect home.

Pluto, a nine-year-old Pit Bull cross arrived into the charity’s care in November 2012 when he was just six weeks old. Although he did find a loving home initially, sadly it didn’t work out and when returned, he was often overlooked in favour of younger, smaller dogs.

We’re so thrilled for Pluto that he has found his happily ever after at last. He was a popular pup here and so many happy tears were shed when we waved him off.

Every dog who comes into our care is cherished by our team, but nothing makes us happier than getting to send them off to their forever home. That’s especially true with a dog like Pluto who has waited so long for that moment.

Unfortunately, we have seen a sharp decline in the number of people applying to adopt a dog over the past few months, so we are appealing to the public to please consider a rescue dog

Canine Carers at Dogs Trust Ireland were shocked to find a wooden skewer protruding from the side of a dog who was brought into their Munster Rehoming Facility.

Gracie came into the charity’s care after being found straying by a Local Authority dog warden. The two-year-old Lurcher was so hungry that she had resorted to eating whatever she could find to survive, including rubbish.

After being examined by a vet upon arrival, she was found to be underweight, had pressure sores and skin issues but otherwise appeared in good health. The dog was not microchipped so there was no way to contact her previous owner and establish why she was found alone, wandering and searching for food.

A litter of crossbreed puppies were found in a cardboard box in a garden at just five-days old in Finglas, Dublin

We are appealing for public support after seeing an influx of surrendered and abandoned dogs, including a box of five-day-old puppies that was recently handed into their rehoming centre in Dublin.

A member of the public discovered the abandoned litter of four crossbreed pups in his garden in Finglas, in a cardboard box. The man immediately brought the tiny siblings to Dogs Trust where it was established by the charity’s Veterinary team that they were no more than five days old.

Niamh Curran-Kelly, Veterinary and Welfare Manager at Dogs Trust Ireland said::

Puppies of this age are completely and utterly dependant on their mum. Their eyes and ears are closed and they’re unable to toilet themselves or regulate their body temperature, so they wouldn’t have survived much longer their own.

“Thankfully, they got to us in time so we could give them the care they needed, including bottle feeding and toileting them every two hours. Sadly, the smallest of the litter passed away, despite veterinary intervention but unfortunately this is quite common with orphaned puppies.”

As Valentine’s Day approaches,we are appealing for a home for its ‘cutest couple’, who have collectively spent 35 months in their care.

Collie crossbreeds, two-year-old Finn and one-year-old Willow, affectionately called ‘Fillow‘ by staff, arrived at the charity separately but quickly became the best of friends.

Both dogs have had difficult starts in life. At just two weeks old, Willow and her siblings were abandoned in a bucket, but thankfully a kind passer-by took them to Dogs Trust where they were hand reared by staff.

Willow can be quite worried by noises and unfamiliar people, but Finn helps give her the confidence she needs to be a happy and trusting lady. Similarly for Finn, he is a sensitive soul who finds comfort with his ‘girlfriend’ Willow. Their unbreakable bond helps them both overcome their fears.

Despite the charity’s best efforts to get the adorable duo noticed on social media with their adorable antics, the pair remain overlooked.

Anyone?

This is our heart-warming, happy tear inducing, 2021 #SantaPawsDay video Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we can line up toys for the dogs to enter one by one and choose their very own Christmas present.

Some dogs are straight in there and immediately know what they want while others need a helping hand. Some find their toy and then bring it to their favourite human to show them what they’ve gotten, and some are so petite they struggle bringing their toy with them, but their determination wins in the end!

Merry Christmas, from all the dogs and the humans at Dogs Trust Ireland.

Earlier this month, we announced our campaign to #EndPuppyFarming and shared stories of some of the 130 victims of puppy farming that we cared for this year. These frightened little souls lived in absolute misery – their condition when they came to us shocked even our most experienced staff.

To highlight the transformations these dogs made, all thanks to our wonderful supporters, we are releasing a video (above) of some of the dogs’ receiving toys for the first time. With everything they’ve been through, it is amazing to watch their curious, excited and hopeful reactions to their first ever cuddly toy.

Most of us humans are delighted with the easing of restrictions and the return to ‘normal’ life…..however, not everybody feels the same, especially many of our furry friends.

Puppies and young dogs may never have known a home without people in it and even older dogs who were once used to their owners leaving to go to work, have become used to human company throughout the pandemic.

We have lots of tips and tricks to help prepare your dog for spending more time in their own company, and to teach them vital skills that they can apply in any situation.

By signing up to receive a very special Life After Lockdown pack, you will receive a guide on how to get your dog ready, what do if you’ve just brought a pooch home, and how to help prepare them for life after lockdown.
