Jaykers.

For next week that’s in it.

Joanne O’Sullivan at Dublin Zoo writes:

Legend suggests that St. Patrick banished all snakes from Ireland, however this weekend Dublin Zoo is welcoming the arrival of this striking green tree python to its Reptile House. The green tree python is a small, slender species of python which prefers to coil over a tree branch rather than live on the ground. Native to the rainforests of New Guinea and northern Australia, green tree pythons are non venomous. Green tree pythons are carnivores and feed on small mammals and occasionally reptiles.

Anne-Louise Foley writes:

“In tonight’s The Zoo (first episode in new series, RTÉ One, 7pm) we get to see the very cute baby white-faced saki monkey, Chico, when he was just a week old. His parents – Zorbas and Liana – were introduced two years ago and got on great. Everyone in the zoo was delighted when this little fella came along. The camera crew who make The Zoo got great footage so it’ll be a real treat for viewers this evening to see Chico up close when he was a tiny baby.”

The yet-to-be named infant is the third infant born to Tema and Danso. With a strong relationship between mother and infant the new arrival is settling in well.

Name anyone?

Twins!

Catherine O’Connor writes:

Dublin Zoo is delighted to announce the birth of two red pandas. The twins, one male and one female, were born on July 14 and weighed approximately 150 grams. Although the cubs were born almost three months ago, it is only now the cubs are starting to venture out of their den.

The zoo would like YOU to to suggest a name for the twins ‘based on their Asian origins’.

The Irish Examiner understands the incident took place after zoo keepers agreed to allow the family to view the tapirs from a closer site than most visitors — a step that is usually closely monitored by expert workers.

However, after entering the second site it is understood one of the zoo’s two adult tapirs — a female called Rio, whose weeks-old baby was also in the location — became agitated. An attack followed, resulting in the child suffering serious injuries after being mauled by the animal.
