Youtube scientist Destin of Smarter Every Day explores breaks out the 130,000fps camera to observe the genuinely fascinating phenomenon of Prince Rupert’s Drop (aka ‘Rupert’s Balls’ or ‘Dutch Tears’) – whereby molten glass dropped into cold water hardens into a tadpole-like droplet with a long tapering tail.
The head of the droplet is virtually impervious to brute force. But just tip the tail and…you’ll see.
It’s because of the shape of the glass.
Which has a crucial influence over the circulatory patterns in the liquid.
