A U.N. human rights committee has denounced the Vatican for adopting policies that allowed priests to rape and molest tens of thousands of children, and urged it to open its files on the pedophiles and the churchmen who concealed their crimes.

In a devastating report Wednesday, the U.N. committee also severely criticized the Holy See for its attitudes toward homosexuality, contraception and abortion and urged it to review its policies to ensure children’s rights and their access to health care.

The committee issued its recommendations after subjecting the Holy See to a daylong interrogation last month on its implementation of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, the main international treaty ensuring children’s rights.

According to reports, a gay dating website for “homosensible Roman Catholic priests”, has been operating out of the Vatican.
Despite not being explicitly pornographic, reports from EponymousFlower suggest that the site, named Venerabilis, is geared towards enabling sexual contact between priests.
The site contains chatrooms in five languages, where sexual encounters in process have been discovered, with face-to-face meetings arranged in a number of locations.

The interview with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (right)  who ranks second only to Pope Benedict in the Vatican’s hierarchy, was the latest attempt at damage control by senior Vatican officials since the leaks scandal began in January.

In a rare interview with the Italian Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana, Bertone, the Vatican’s secretary of state, accused the media of “intentionally ignoring” the good things the Church does while dwelling on scandals.

…Bertone branded as false the image of the Vatican as a place of intrigue and power struggles, saying: “The truth is that there is an attempt to sow division that comes from the Devil.”

A strange report from Rome on the forthcoming Eucharistic Congress in Ireland.

How it will help heal a “wounded church” in it’s “process of renewal” and – via Archbishop Diarmuid Martin – why we’re just not ready for a visit by Pope Benedict.

“The Pope himself and he said this to me. He would like a visit to Ireland to be an integral part of this process of renewal. And he would make a journey, even if it was difficult for him, to contribute to that. [But] Just at the moment I don’t think that process of renewal, particularly renewal in faith, has got far enough to be able to use that visit by the Pope in a way that would strengthen the faith.”

Fair enough.

Is it easier for a crime boss to be buried next to the popes than it is for a camel to get through the eye of a needle.

Considerably.

The Vatican is facing a deepening controversy over the burial 22 years ago of a notorious crime boss [Enrico De Pedis,’godfather’ of Rome’s notorious Magliana gang], with reports emerging that the church accepted a one billion lire (£407,000) payment from the mobster’s widow to allow his interment in a basilica.

In communicating this summary of the Findings of the Apostolic Visitation, the Holy See re-echoes the sense of dismay and betrayal which the Holy Father expressed in his Letter to the Catholics of Ireland regarding the sinful and criminal acts that were at the root of this particular crisis.

During their stay in Ireland, the Visitators were able themselves to see just how much the shortcomings of the past gave rise to an inadequate understanding of and reaction to the terrible phenomenon of the abuse of minors, not least on the part of various Bishops and Religious Superiors. With a great sense of pain and shame, it must be acknowledged that within the Christian community innocent young people were abused by clerics and Religious to whose care they had been entrusted, while those who should have exercised vigilance often failed to do so effectively.

Meanwhile, what does this mean?

Since the Visitators also encountered a certain tendency, not dominant but nevertheless fairly widespread among priests, Religious and laity, to hold theological opinions at variance with the teachings of the Magisterium, this serious situation requires particular attention, directed principally towards improved theological formation. It must be stressed that dissent from the fundamental teachings of the Church is not the authentic path towards renewal.
