The Pogues & The Dubliners – The Irish Rover

Last month, I asked you for your favourite drinking song. Goldenbrown won my esteem with this entry:

“A great drinking song about the drink – and a great tale – I wanted it to be a true story LOL. And it’s my party trick when I’m out on the jar.”

Nick says: Thanks Goldenbrown and all who entered.

Eek-A-Mouse – Ganja Smuggling

Last week, I asked you to post your favourite reggae song in honour of the late Robbie Shakespeare. Reader Flawless won my esteem with this entry:

“My favourite Eek-A-Mouse song. The Irish-Jamaican connections go back hundreds of years and I think his songs are a striking example of Irish traditional music permeating through to reggae music. The airs, the metre, the lilting, etc.”

Nick says: Thanks Flawless and to all who entered.

With the passing of legendary bassist Robbie Shakespeare this week, the theme for our voucher-less music knockabout has to be: What’s your favourite reggae song?

Jeff Buckley – I Know It’s Over

Last week, I asked you for your favourite song about or mentioning mothers. Jasper won my esteem with this entry:

“My personal opinion is that it is rare for a cover artist to eclipse the originator. It might, on the face of it, sound a better rendition. But the song belongs to the penmanship of those that came before.

“Rarer still, is a song that is completely owned by the cover artist. I believe this is one. Apologies to Mr Morrissey, he shall not read this, but facts are facts.”

Nick says: Thanks Jasper and to everyone who entered.

Last week I asked for your favourite Beatles song. Rosette Of Sirius won my esteem with this entry:

“The Beatles are ever present in my house – musically speaking – as I listen to them in one way or another every other day. Twice on Sundays. I remain devoted.

“It is, as other have said, very hard to pick a single track. However for the sake of it, I’ll suggest – in its entirety – ‘the long one’ that is Abbey Road Medley (above). Golden Slumbers…. Oh, man

“Now, I do appreciate it’s a medley, but given it one single track on vinyl it’s fair game imo. If you can, just sit yourself down for 15 minutes – preferably with a decent set of headphones – and escape for while. Jesus they were brilliant.”

Nick says: Thanks Rosette and to all who entered.

Last week my esteem was won by Will for his choice of song about the ocean.

Will wrote:

“Tom Waits’ All The World Is Green from the album Blood Money. Containing the most delicious key change with marimba and bass clarinet solo.

“The gorgeous lyrics: ‘I fell into the ocean, when you became my wife; risked it all against the sea, to have a better life’.”

Nick says
: Thanks Will and to everyone who entered.

Last week, my esteem was won by Lilly who chose a classic Irish standard sung by Enya as her favourite song to fall asleep to.

“If I were to pick a song to nod off to – preferably with the dying embers of a fire flickering on the ceiling – it would be Enya, I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls.”

Nick says: Well done Lily and thanks all.

Thank Fidelma it’s Friday.

The crowd’s all here so let’s do another (sadly) voucher-less Friday music gabfest, shall we?

I’m almost afraid to choose a theme in case some pedantic alert reader (you know who you are!) pipes up that I chose the same theme on (insert exact date and year and link to previous BS comp from the mists of time).

But I shall not be deterred! This week, I want to know: what’s your favourite song to listen to before you go to sleep?

Here’s mine.

Please include video link if possible.

Last week, my esteem was won by Capernosity & Function who chose as his favourite winter song In The Bleak Midwinter.

“This version is from Carols at King’s College, Cambridge. This is the epitome of the High Church Anglican hymn in the classic Church of England Christmas setting. Winter is my favourite season and this song evokes those images of the barren trees surrounding the ancient church amidst a graveyard of faded headstones tinged with frost. Lovely.”

Nick says: Thanks to all who entered.

Meanwhile…

It nearly got away.

And three weeks ago (long story!!), my esteem was won by Otis Blue whose favourite song about travel was Wide Open Road by The Triffids (above).

Otis wrote:

“The quintessential Aussie road trip song.”

Nick says: Thanks Otis.

Alison Goldfrapp – A&E

Last week, I asked you for your favourite song to dance to. Glaxiapolizia won my esteem with this entry.

“From first-up floor-filler to clearing the sticky dancefloor…before they launch into Amhran na bhFiann and the lights come up to highlight the bleary-eyes of dishevelled Dishco-dancers full of dandruff and regret after the mandatory Copper’s-binge-feed of 8 pints, too many WKDs & a rake of JagerMeisters: the sublime Alison Goldfrapp – Have a lovely day, peeps…!”

Nick says: Thanks all.

Thank Fildelma it’s Friday.

With nightlife returning for some, let’s have a music competition open to all, whatever the medical status, shall we?

Sadly, we are still operating on our own esteem steam and without a voucher for the winner.  One day soon.

This week, I would like to know, if you were a DJ tonight at a reopened club, what would be your first floor-filling choon?

Here’s mine.

Please include video link where possible.
