Thank Fifi it’s Friday.

It’s been two long weeks since our last tango. How did you all cope?

This week, reader Verbatim suggested the theme for our voucherless music banter: what’s your favourite song with a number in the title/lyrics?

Here’s mine.

Please include video links if possible.

Two weeks ago, I asked for your favourite song about or mentioning an animal. You answered in your tens.

Eamonn won my esteem with this entry:

Gil Scott-Heron – Delta Man

Eamonn writes:

“‘The hooded crows, make me smile with their waist coats and gnarly smiles…'”

Nick says: Congratulations Eamonn. Thanks to everyone who entered.

Thank Feckula it’s Friday.

It’s that time of the week when the jets are cooled, chill pills are taken and the chamomile tea kicks in (Just as well as there’s still no voucher!)

This week I want to know what’s your favourite song about or mentioning a specific animal.

Here’s mine.

Please include video links if possible.

Last week I asked you to name your favourite song about the sun. Johnny “Diego” Keenan (him off the telly) won my esteem with this entry…

Bob Marley – Sun Is Shining (House remix)

Johnny writes:

“When I was Down Under in 1999, I went from night club to day club most Saturdays/ Sundays. Anyone who was around Sydney back then might remember Kings X clubbing finishing after The Beresford and the soul train to North Sydney was always one for the party troopers.

“This particular remix brought it all together, and I feel it brought on board another generation of Bob fans.

“Sun is shining, the weather is sweet. Makes you wanna move yer dancin feet”. Grrr Up!”

Nick says: Congratulations Johnny and thanks everyone for entering.

Thank Fiadh it’s Friday.

We all need a bit of light relief in these heavy times, right?

So let’s strike up the band now that Spring has finally sprung. This week I want to know: what’s your favourite piece of music about or mentioning the sun?

Here’s mine.

Still no voucher, I’m afraid. We’ve put out many feelers, but no takers (yet) and some blank resistance. Must be Bodger’s cologne.

…last week, I asked you for your favourite piece of music from Eastern Europe. You answered in your tens. Gorugeen won my esteem with this entry…

;

Sky Wikluh – Pazi Sta Radis

Gorugeen writes:

“My favourite music from Eastern Europe is Pazi Sta Radis by Wikluh Sky of Serbia. It’s the title tune for the forgettable A Serbian Film (2010).  I first heard it in a tiny coffee place where I live. It was playing on one of those big old fashioned ghetto blasters. The floor was vibrating. Best listened to on something with deep bass. It’s been my ringtone for years.”

Nick says: Congrats Gorugeen and thanks all.

Thank Fyodor it’s Friday.

With the Ukraine dominating the news, it’s time to ask: what’s your favourite piece of music from Eastern Europe?

Here’s mine.

It’s still a voucher-free zone but let’s be having you.

Last week, after a suggestion from Liam Deliverance, I asked for your favourite piece of psychedelic music.

Unmutual won my esteem with this internationally trippy entry…

György Ligeti – Lux Aeterna

Unmutual writes:

“1960s ✔️

Drug induced? (written on morphine allegedly) ✔️✔️

Out there,… way out there! ✔️✔️✔️

A masterpiece in micropolyphony…”

Nick says: Well done, Unmutual and thanks all.

Thank Flor it’s Friday.

As Storm Eunice abates and the nation crawls out from behind the sofa, dusts itself down and straightens its tie, it’s time to celebrate with more voucherless music argy-bargy.

This week the theme comes courtesy of regular reader Liam Deliverance who asks: What’s your favourite moment of musical psychedelia?

Here’s mine.

Please include video links if possible.

Last week I asked you for your favourite karaoke song, after a suggestion by Millie.

Millie herself and Janet both won my esteem with their choices:

Maria McKee – Show Me Heaven

Millie wrote:

“This song comes attached to a very emotionally difficult moment from my childhood, so much so that for a long time I would cry uncontrollably when I heard it. So to deal with this, I learned the words and taught myself to sing it. To this day, it remains my karaoke song and I only sometimes shed a tear. Never underestimate how grief can affect you, even after 20 years have passed.”

Meanwhile…

Alain Baschung – La nuit je mens

So mucky it’s age restricted!

Janet, dreams of an alternate universe wrote:

“One for that nostalgic rose-tinted glasses time of the night….you know the time, my rendition of La Nuit Je Mens fills me with delightful agony; others just agony probably ;) the best part is it’s that talky singing the French do best!”

Nick says: Well done, Millie and Janet and thanks all.

Coincidence. Just returned from my run in Paris today and saw [Janet’s] Alain reference…

Thank Frankie it’s Friday.

It’s the weekend, like. So let’s party!

Even better: let’s engage in another round of music bants. Still no voucher, but you’ve all proved that your love runs deeper.

This week’s theme comes courtesy of The Millie Obnoxious (a misnomer surely) who writes:

“May I offer a suggestion? Karaoke songs. What do you belt out when gee-eyed and in the mood for a sing song?”

You’d have to ask my neighbours.

Update: They just got back to me. Apparently it’s this one.

Last week, SOQ asked for your favourite cover version. A really great playlist unfurled. But Micko won my esteem with this entry…

…Johnny Cash – Hurt, covering Trent Reznor and NIN.

Micko sez:

“In fact all the covers on that ‘American IV’ album are brilliant. Especially Hung my Head, The Man comes around and Personal Jesus. Rick Rubin’s production is savage. Amazing versions all, but I think ‘Hurt’ nails it, coz it just perfectly sums up Johnnys life.

‘He’d just died when I first saw it and even though I wasn’t the worlds biggest Johnny Cash fan at the time, I remember tearing up watching it.

‘Something about the distortion on the piano at the end, , the way it hammers down, just gets me ever single time. I think it’s the finality of it. Perfect…”

Nick says: Well done, Micko and thanks all.

Thank Philomena it’s Friday.

It’s Springtime so what better way to mark the end of the Winter season than with a music question. (Alas, still no voucher).

The suggestion for this week’s theme comes courtesy of regular reader SOQ, who wants to know what everyone’s favourite cover version is.

This is SOQ’s choice. He says:

” I have a bee in my bonnet about this young lady at the moment.”

And here is my choice:

The Triffids – Wide Open Road

Last week I asked you to name your favourite driving song. Otis Blue won my esteem with this entry.

“Depends on the car, the context and the journey. If it’s just yerself in a Ute in Oz, it’s The Triffids – Wide Open Road.”

Nick says: Thanks to all who entered and props to Otis.

Thank Joni it’s Friday.

Welcome to the cosy fireside chat of Broadsheet; a place where you can rest your weary legs after a long, hard week of tearing strips off each other!

Still no voucher, more’s the pity.

This week, as Canada’s truckers make their way en masse to Ottawa, I want to know what’s your favourite driving song?

Here’s mine.

Please include video link if possible.

Al Stewart – Year of the Cat

Last week, in honour of Meat Loaf’s passing, I asked you to name your favourite song mentioning an animal. Controversially, I’m calling a tie between Millie and Scottser. (PS: Capernosity, you’re right: ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’ is a masterpiece.)

The Millie Obnoxious wrote:

“I’m gonna throw Year of the Cat by Al Stewart into the mix because it’s a great song with a great melody (I just love that piano), it’s ideal for prancing around the house after a few glasses of wine and, most importantly, it’s named after my favourite animal.”

Meanwhile…

Thin Lizzy – Johnny the Fox meets Jimmy the Weed

Scottser wrote:

“Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed. That’s what I’m going to do tomorrow; head up to Johnny Fox’s for a pint and a cheeky spliff.”

Nick says: Well done, Mille and Scottser and thanks all.

The Bangles – Manic Monday

Last week, in honour of Ronnie Spector’s passing, I asked for your favourite song by a girl group. The Tec Dr won my esteem with this entry.

“It has to be the catchy as hell Manic Monday written by the Genius Prince and recorded by The Bangles. The piano motif in the song is something else.”

Nick says: Congrats Tec Dr and thanks to everyone who entered.

Bon Iver- Blindsided

Last week, I asked you to name your favourite song about or mentioning snow. Point Of Order won my esteem with this entry:

“It brings me back to when I had my heart broken, while living in a bedsit in Portobello, listening to Bon Iver on a loop. ‘I crouch like a crow/ Contrasting the snow…’’. My heart has since healed.”

Nick says: Congrats Point Of Order and thanks a million to all the commenters for your kind comments last week.
