More than 50 people participated in Germany’s third annual office chair championships on April 16th, racing each other on a downhill course in the town of Bad Koenig, The contestants were free to adapt their office chairs for race conditions, but were not allowed motors to propel them down the cordoned-off road. Most had mounted inline skater wheels for greater speed.

Racers also wore helmets, knee pads and elbow protectors, as contestants reached speeds of up to 35 kilometers per hour (21.7 mph). Some sat on the chair, others lay on their stomachs. The prize eventually went to Luxembourg native Pierre Feller, who timed in at 26.59 seconds, setting a record.

The lovely documentary The Swell Season, which premieres tonight at the Tribeca Film Festival, follows the duo and their bandmates on the road as they meet their public. The film begins to show the slow tears in the fabric of Hansard and Irglová’s relationship — both with each other and with their newfound public identities. Irglová doesn’t know if she’s ready for this level of stardom. Hansard, for his part, isn’t sure he even wants this level of mainstream acceptance; he bristles at his working-class mother’s pride at the Oscar win. What begins as something like a concert documentary winds up becoming the mirror opposite of Once: a quiet, stark portrait of how a relationship falls apart.

He then sent his review by ‘audio letter’ to his cousin.

One in four children in the United States is being raised by a single parent — a percentage that has been on the rise and is higher than other developed countries, according to a report released Wednesday.

Of the 27 industrialized countries studied by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the U.S. had 25.8 percent of children being raised by a single parent, compared with an average of 14.9 percent across the other countries.

Ireland was second (24.3 percent), followed by New Zealand (23.7 percent). Greece, Spain, Italy and Luxemborg had among the lowest percentages of children in single-parent homes.
