Inventor Izhar Gafni has built a bike called The Alfa with a virtually maintenance-free belt drive.

It weighs 9kg, can support the weight of three adults, cost between €7 and €9 to build and is entirely made of cardboard and other recycled materials. He sez:

The development to what you see today took three years. Two were spent just figuring out the cardboard complications–leading to several patents–and the last was spent converting a cardboard box on wheels to a relatively normal looking bike.

Gafni is currently looking to raise funds to put the Alfa into mass production.

Directed and produced by Keith “keef” Ehrlich, the latest in the Made By Hand craft video series showcases the art of cigar rolling at NYC’s Martinez Cigar Shop:

In 1974, Dominican immigrant Don Antonio Martinez started a small shop in New York City selling hand rolled cigars. Thirty-eight years later his son, Jesus, carries on the tradition. The shop combines craftsmanship with community, mixing equal parts work and play.

THE PROMISED provision of free GP care for 60,000 people with long-term illnesses is likely to be delayed by at least a year because of legal issues.

Successive deadlines for implementing one of the key promises in the Fine Gael/Labour programme for government, the rolling out of free GP care, have been missed.

The first phase of this process would have seen free primary care extended to people with long-term illnesses such as diabetes and epilepsy.

However, complex issues that have arisen during the drafting of the primary legislation required for this change have caused significant delays, according to an informed source. In the meantime, most of the €15 million allocated for this purpose in 2012 has been used to offset the HSE’s deficit.
