Yesterday evening.
Members of TENI (Transgender Equality Network Ireland) and other civil society groups were in attendance yesterday to ensure “that trans voices are at the centre” of the Gender Recognition Bill which is being debated in the Seanad currently.
This legislation will legally recognise transgender people.

Why? The look of contempt on Breda’s face in that debate last week when the lesbian woman described how she and her partner were raising a kid together. I saw contempt, dunno what anyone else saw, but the restrained contempt I saw was enough to make me want to growl at the TV :)

I used to be a bit more conservative and think, nah a child is better with the biological parents etc – in an ideal world. But when I see the pure hatred that these pro-family and pro-lifers emit for others you’d think again about trusting your dog with them.
Perhaps the right to marry and procreate in general should be more tightly regulated – and non-racist, non-sexist, non-reactionary prigs could be restricted from doing so with penalty points – would give the superintendents something new to do.

Genuinely curious but what rights are they being denied? A former boss of mine is a full op, trans whatever living as a woman, still running a successful business. She has 2 kids and is divorced and has the same unequal parental rights as a divorced father. Luckily her and her ex wife are quite amicable. Possibly because she pays a sh*t load of maintenance
How does it affect the kids, have they lost a father, are they not allowed call him/her dad anymore?
I have a transgendered friend who has three kids. Her eldest is @ 20, he still calls her Dad. This Bill isn’t about how TG people should interact with their family – it”s about legally recognizing people in their true gender identity. In a lot of countries, including the UK – our nearest neighbour, this is already in place.
i heard someone on the rte radio yesterday saying that the new bill only recognises ‘new’ genders for single people and that in order for status to be recognised, this MtF person must divorce first. there was also an issue where pyschiatric reports are required before status is recognised. and the bill does not facilitate children under 16 under its remit. the bill doesn’t tick all the boxes, unfortunately.
It may not tick all the boxes, but it’s at least a step in the right direction. Currently, there is no legislature (at all) in Ireland relating to TG people.
First thing that comes to mind – she can’t have a passport reflecting her new gender. Unless she was born elsewhere in the World. She can’t have her revenue details updated, generally, she can’t go about her daily business without revealing her previous identity. This has been available to transgendered people in the UK since 2004.
Who cares about the UK?
But about, people born in one sex but now living as another, pre op, post op, thinking the op? It’s pretty cloudy. What if eg a man post op, lives as a woman but wants to remain a “male” on paper? Doe is become an option?
But shouldn’t we as a society be working towards a system where whether you’re legally/psychologically one gender or another it doesn’t matter? I don’t see why the post office or the welfare office or the garda station need to know what’s in your knickers.
I mean I can’t see where it’s important in a society striving for gender equality, other than at the gynaecologist’s office where it’s probably important to give a heads up…?

Why we couldn’t just copy the UK system (that seems to work in the main?) or another system that works and bring in the same system here, I just don’t know.
Irish politicians constantly seem to have to reinvent the wheel.
Yes – the Irish Parliament – The Dail, The Irish House of Lords – The Seannad. For a nation that is renowned throughout the World to spawn saints and scholars – perhaps this is an opportunity to catch-up with the UK – not necessarily on their drinking when they come to Temple Bar – but certainly on their laws?
