The Classic Files

Oh my.

The NCBI Classic & Vintage Show was held yesterday in the grounds of St. Columba’s College in Whitechurch near Tibradden at the foot of the Dublin mountains.

All week Patrick ‘Carspotter’ Cummins will be featuring his favourite cars from the show beginning with the three beauties (above).

1. Ford Cortina 1600E: “A Mk 2 Cortina sporting the ‘E’ designation which stood for ‘executive’. This high-end model is well reputed. My own father drove a wine-coloured one in the mid 70s and it was his most memorable car.”

2. Sunbeam Alpine: “What a beautiful automobile! The Sunbeam had very a continental appearance despite being one of the famed sports cars developed by the Rootes Group in the 1950s. I would guess this example is from early-mid 1960s.”

3. Morris Oxford: “Designed by Alec Issigonis of Morris Minor and Mini Cooper fame, the Morris Oxford was Morris’ first step-away from the old-style of ‘body-on-frame’ construction.”

Name those years anyone.

More impeccably aged jammers tomorrow.

“I saw him fight Chuck Norris in Way of The Dragon, I didn’t see him fight Chuck Norris in Enter the Dragon”

      I wanna be that guy

    2. Ms Piggy

Isn’t it, tho? Whenever me and Mr Piggy watch 70s movies, we compete to count brown cars. The entire decade was a sea of brown cars.

I am not sure of the years of the others, but the Cortina MkII came out in 1966. My dad bought one second hand the year I was born (which is why I know). It was a beautiful burgundy colour, 1300 cc 4 door with front bench seat and column gears. I have never seen another the same layout.
We are a large family, and I have memories that would make a modern parent cringe of all 11 of us (9 kids and 2 parents – this was before the youngest came along – sitting in the car. as one of the youngest, I sat up front between my mum and dad, with my next elder brother beside me, my younger (then youngest) brother in my mum’s arms and the rest sitting in the back, eldest at the windows, and sitting herringbone – one front of seat, next back. Despite my being so young, many of my best early memories were related to that car.
With the caravan, we used go the length and breadth of Ireland every summer, until it finally gave out and was no longer up to it. It was sold, still functioning, but overheating on long journeys, and we got a Fiat 131 Mirafiori. Not a bad car, but no Cortina!

Great anecdote. I love to hear personal stories like this. As an aside, I have a lovely Fiat 131 coming up in an NCBI show submission soon.
