Thanks Carlos Strange

‘sheet movie critic Mark Ryall writes:

The 2016 Oscar nominations are out and Irish interest is considerable this year, with Lenny Abrahamson, Saoirse Ronan, and Michael Fassbender all nominated in the main categories. Emma Donoghue is also nominated for best adapted screenplay.

Brooklyn and Room are both up for best picture alongside The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant and Spotlight.

Alejandro Iñárritu’s The Revenant is way out in front with 12 nominations, but the major surprise is that George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road is just behind with 10. The consensus is that DiCaprio will bring home the shiny statue, but my own personal Punxsutawney Phil predicts that The Revenant will win for best picture and director.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (yay!) got five nods, all in technical categories (boo).

The full list of nominees is here. The 88th Academy Awards will be held on 28th February.

Think Chewbacca should get an Oscar. Best supporting role to Han for years.

    Come on Academy Recognise him!!!!!

I don’t know what we are all getting so excited about. Sure they are all British, or at least will be by the end of Sky’s next bulletin.

Saoirse went from being a country girl to a ‘Story in a few months. Changing nationality shouldn’t be much of a stretch.

Right? OK, she’s very talented and still only a kid with a great ear for accents – but, Lord, that Straight Outta Crumlin brogue really irks.

They put a flag in her and renamed body parts after Welsh districts.

And fair play to Abrahamson. He didn’t think he’s get the nod himself but was hoping Larson and O’Donoghue would.

    1. Mr. Camomile T

Delighted to see him getting this level of recognition, superb director. Can’t wait to see Room, everything else he’s done has been gold:
      Adam & Paul
      Garage
      What Richard Did
      Frank

There are two exceptional scenes in that film that stood out for me: When Richard confesses to his father (and his father’s reaction) and when the mother stands up at the remembrance ceremony and calls out the congregation as conspirators in her son’s death. Those are powerful, emotional scenes.

Skellig Michael should get nominated. It should be in the audience, gulls and all.

    Claiming them as our own?
Fassbender was born in Germany and Saoirse Ronan in New York.
Sure Ireland is a global village.

It’s not that simple though. For example, I’ve never heard the Germans claiming Michael Fassbender, even when discussing German Oscar chances.

      1. Cool_Hand_Lucan

I think the Germans are a little wary of claiming things with vague German connections. It didn’t work out so well for them in the past

    2. george

His mother is Irish and he left Germany when he was two. Both of Saoirse Ronan’s parents are Irish and she left America when she was 3. To suggest they’re not Irish is ridiculous.

  5. rotide

If Mark Rylance doesn’t win, I’m burning hollywood down.

He’s the type of talent that puts Leo’s “quest for an oscar” into perspective

      1. Neilo

Fast Bender = Carl Lewis? Soooo funny, I should be writing bits for the Golden Globes in, like, the mid-to-late ’80s *I’ll get me shillelagh and Kelly green coat*

.. so tonight, enjoy yourselves because nothing can take the sting out of the world’s economic problems like watching millionaires present each other with golden statues.

Some contrast between Saoirse Ronan’s approach involving sending Irish Tea bags to critics and being all over the media more campaign with Mickey Fassbender’s more dignified approach.

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

      Oh well said.
Was trying to, but if you say something objective about a trending and popular Irish actor / artist you get slapped with the oul Begrudgery Brush.

  8. munkifisht

Seems to be an Irish actor and win an Oscar you need to be part Irish. Michael Fassbender, German-Irish, Saoirse Ronan, American-Irish, Lets not even start with Daniel Day-Lewis. Think Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker are the only two Irish actors to win an oscar and hold only an Irish passport.

  9. And the O'Scair goes to Frilly Keane

    Lenny Abrahamson is a Paddy??

    well oh be da’hogget
between him and that Fassbender Kerry tramp

twouldn’t a’ happened in Dev and McQuaid’s day I tell ya

    Good luck to them all

  10. Quint

Fassbender’s father is German, mother Northern Irish, left Ireland for London at the earliest opportunity. To consider him fully Irish is a moot point.

    1. St. John Smythe

I left Carlow at the first opportunity I could; my Dad was from Kildare, my mother was from Tipp.
I’m still ‘from’ Carlow even if I haven’t lived there for 17 years.
