From left: Maire Whelan; President Higgins and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar

The letter, which is confidential and known as a “warrant of appointment”, insisted President Higgins ratify Ms Whelan’s role in the appeals court immediately.

The unpublished letter is understood to have included a “specific” demand that the appointment be made on Monday morning, despite the fact the timeline had until then not been the subject of any discussion.

While no formal reason was included in the letter explaining the schedule being sought, sources close to the process said they believe the timeline was put forward to ensure the position was set in stone before any Dáil or Cabinet criticism today.

    Can’t say he’s not decisive.

This is a great appointment. Great judge. Failing MSM criticising. SAD!!

In fairness his (Trump’s) style is widely known. Also in fairness, hard to get tone from text.

        1. Spaghetti Hoop

@realDonaldTrump Tweet parodying is now a thing? It shows that you read Trump’s tweets. Pray for newsjustin! or is that FAKE newsjustin?

          1. Nigel

Meh. Wait til Micheal D tweets start catching on: ‘As the ancient Brehon Laws were passed down to us from the bosoms of our forefathers and the great chiefs took their judges and appointed them masters from hill to shore of the rational ordering of a communal society 1/,1015’

          2. Nigel

If only there was an edit button for that comma as the ancient scribes who laboured tirelessly over their precious manuscripts through the heat of summer and the cold of winter must surely have known etc.

…in fairness news, I’d noticed you had mellowed from your usual tone…so that’s what rabid right to alt right looks like…

Drop the revs, they aren’t sending you a party invite. Or are you related to all three, like?

    3. Sheik Yahbouti

You would know, if you weren’t just an annoying troll, that this woman has never been appointed as a Judge. Your amusement value (thin. at best) has Officially expired. Would you ever. …..

  2. Daisy Chainsaw

Fianna Failure will be too busy ratcheting up their expenses to give a flying fupp about it. They can whinge all over twitter as much as they like, but their “opposition” has been as effective as a tweet.

A sure she’s well connected, well off, and gets up early in the morning.
Leo’s only starting the way he means to go on. It’s not as if there’s anybody dying in ambulances on the way to hospitals two hours away, or families living in their cars or anything like that.

    1. Rob_G

There are no families living in their cars

There is one lady who was provided with a house, decided that she didn’t like the location, and is now claiming that she is living in her car so that she can live exactly where she wants; maybe that is who you are thinking of.

        1. Rob_G

There is a very bad homeless problem in Ireland, but families that would be left otherwise destitute are usually provided with a hotel room at the very least. The only reports I have seen of ‘families living in their cars’ are usually publicity stunts with a view to jumping up the housing lists to be provided with a council house. I am open to correction on this point, if you a particular case in mind.

Not sure what any of this has to do with the appointment of a new judge, but anyway.

“The only reports I have seen of ‘families living in their cars’ are usually publicity stunts with a view to jumping up the housing lists to be provided with a council house.”

Homeless families are trying to get homes? The nerve!

          2. Nigel

People so desperate to get homes they’ll live in their cars in an effort to force the issue? I’m not sure your reasons for discounting these are convincing, as opposed to indicating how dire the situation is for some people. Living your car is hardly a jolly wheeze.

          3. Listrade

“This week, the family slept in the car for three nights. They have also been staying intermittently with parents and a sister who live in small houses on the northside of Cork city.”

Ah, I see your point, she was only sleeping in the car, not “living”. Well, I feel foolish for ever sympathising with her now.

          4. Rob_G

            @ Listrade –

She was provided with a house. Only it wasn’t located exactly where she wanted to live, so now she is (allegedly) sleeping in her car.

She has family living around Cork (which is where the children were actually staying); the only reason she would be sleeping in her car is to skip the the queue of other families who are also waiting for social housing.

          5. Listrade

“the only reason she would be sleeping in her car is to skip the the queue of other families who are also waiting for social housing.” (allegedly)

She took the house. A house in the middle of Clare, completely isolated. She stayed there with the kids. All that is in the article you posted as proof she didn’t live in a car (which the article states she did). You can demean the merits of a victim of domestic abuse wanting to be close to their family for support rather than isolated in the middle of nowhere, unfortunately I seem to have picked up a bad dose and get all bogged down with things like empathy and humanity.

          6. Nigel

Perhaps if the question of ‘why is she sleeping in her car even though she was offered a house’ were expressed less as an accusation and more of an attempt to understand her reasons?

          7. Rob_G

            @ Listrade

            – is being sent to live in Clare some sort of punishment now, like being sent to Siberia?

I can fully appreciate that this lady has had a rough time of it – her partner died, and she then was a victim of domestic abuse. But she was provided with a roof over her head for herself and her children – granted, not exactly where she wanted it, but hardly other side of the country, either. Plenty of people who are also going through some issues in their lives, and aren’t living exactly where they would like to – that’s the way it goes sometimes.

But then, when she decides to voluntarily make her children homeless to use them as leverage in her case for getting a council house – I’m sorry, but I find it very difficult to have sympathy in this instance. There are probably plenty of families on the waiting list in Cork who are also waiting to be housed who this lady will now be looking to skip by means of her cynical, cynical ploy.

          8. Listrade

@robg, then we’ll complain about a single mum on welfare not working. Doesn’t matter that she’s in a cottage miles from anywhere and no family to help with childcare. Doesn’t matter that she’s got to get the kids to and from school somehow with no public transport.

Let’s remove her from a valuable support while she’s particular vulnerable.

Doesn’t matter that her situation meant that she should have been a priority for the local authority to find her a house. Instead it was a charity that homed her.

She was grateful, she took the house, but it wasn’t sustainable for her family.

There’s a level of cynicism and lack or regard of fellow humans that comes from calling her decision to come away from there and back to her family as “a publicity stunt”.

Maybe I’m naive, but I’d still rather give someone the benefit of the doubt, especially as she was clearly vulnerable and in need of support. But that’s just me.

I’m weird like that, thinking it’s ok for a victim of domestic abuse wanting to live near her family as support, thinking that overall it would be less of a burden on the state for her to have that support and for being ok with taxes housing vulnerable people.

But you’re probably right, she should have just been more grateful and sucked up the isolation, no friends or family and all the extra state benefits needed to support that.

          9. Spaghetti Hoop

I agree with Rob_G. There is too much of this going on.

There is also something wrong with this story in that the woman claimed she could not live in Clare as she had “no transport” yet was able to purchase a car in Cork to sleep in and claim it was because she had no house.

  4. MoyestWithExcitement

‘Lalalalalala. Rob can’t hear you. Rob knows we live in a right wing capitalist paradise and that’s all there is to it.’
