Paschal Sheehy reported from Kerry where several presidential hopefuls addressed county councillors – including journalist Gemma O’Doherty – in a bid to secure a nomination for the presidency.

Before playing a clip of Ms O’Doherty speaking to members of the media, Mr Sheehy told show host Claire Byrne:

“Gemma O’Doherty is running on an anti-corruption platform. Now, she refused to discuss with us, afterwards, her reason for raising, sorry..she refused to discuss with us her allegation that Veronica Guerin had been murdered by the State. But she did go into the reasons why she is running for a nomination for he presidency with us.”

Ms O’Doherty then said:

“Well, I believe that the Irish people are greatly concerned about the toxic culture of corruption and cronyism that has infested our state. And I think there is huge concern about the fact that their taxes are being squandered by this government on a daily basis. I feel an awful lot of citizens have been denied the right to truth and justice. They have great concerns about the functioning of our criminal justice system.

“They feel they have been denied the right to a decent healthcare system, to affordable housing. I’m greatly concerned about the crisis of homelessness in our state and really I think that people feel that there’s a disconnect between the political elite, the media and citizens on the ground.

“And these are the areas that I want to raise and I believe that the presidency can be a sanctuary for people who feel disenfranchised and feel alienated from the governing elite in this country.”

    @Bodger, and anyone else who was commenting previously that ‘the Establishment’ was lining out to question/criticise G O’D’s stances on things like vaccines/Madeline McCann because they were ‘afraid’ of her being nominated: do you accept now that most people take issue with her because her views are a bit batty?

      We’ve all seen the clip of her blaming criticism of REGRET parents by the former head of the HSE on “big Pharma” along with the thumb and index finger rubbing gesture, right?

        ‘Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence’ – what would be the benefit to the state that would be so great as to warrant the extra-judicial killing of a journalist? Having a journalist murdered within your jurisdiction usually shines a lot more light on any corruption than would be achieved if the journalist was still alive (I knew nothing about corruption in either Malta or Sloakia until the recent murders in these countries); if a government is trying to cover up corruption, having a journalist murdered on their watch seems a pretty poor way to go about it.

          Rob, you might as well be saying – “I don’t know anything about this – so – ergo it can’t be true.”

          Perhaps if you spent 5 minutes looking into the case you’d be a tad less inclined to throw shade, because, by your own admission, you know nothing about it.

            G O’D has not put forward on argument that has manged to convince me to rethink my position, and so far, neither have you.

            The desire to understand must come from you.

      “A bit Batty” – Thats a great way to describe someone who has been exposing corruption and filth in this banana country for the last 10+ years. No wonder the country is in the way it is. She has been more than clear about the context in which she questioned HVP vaccine and as for the McCanns story she is exposing possible links and holes in the investigations. She is an investigative journalist, how difficult is it to grasp? You know of John Pilger? The man has been tarnished with the “batty” brush too, yet he also has been critically acclaimed for his many work on exposing truths.       The comment says it’s ‘William Delaney’, but it’s actually someone representing the group ‘William Delaney 1957 – 1970.’

      A quick check and it looks like a Mr Seamus Nolan.
      Just found the website (seems legit).
      Never heard of this… yet!

      One citizen of Ireland, who is over the age of 35 will change their name to ‘William Delaney 1957 – 1970’ That citizen will never be identified. Nominations by 4 county or city councils will be sought, in order to get William Delaney 1957 – 1970 onto the ballot sheet. Once achieved the citizen will change their name back and never be identified. Once on the ballot sheet William Delaney 1957 – 1970 can not be removed and the people of Ireland will have the opportunity to vote William as the 10th President of Ireland.

        William Delaney died in 1970 aged 13, three years into a six-year sentence at St Joseph’s Industrial School in Letterfrack, Co Galway.

        The proposal has been made by Kilkenny artist Seamus Nolan to represent “all of the children put into care, neglected, or died and were treated so badly by our society”.

    She was riding the monk.. that’s a fact. She was writing articles about how Gilligan was a bad criminal and her lover was a good criminal. That’s what done for her.

      Mad as that sounds, I recall her husband saying he arrived home one day to find her interviewing Hutch in the kitchen.

    I mostly agree with her sentiments, but don’t trust her motives for a second. If she truly wanted to tackle these issues, she would be gearing up to run in the next general election, not hoping to slide into semi-retirement in a cushy role devoid of political power. Why is she chasing the unearned privilege she affects to eschew?
