From top: Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection Regina Doherty; Then Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar at the launch of a new campaign urging the public to ‘blow the whistle in wellfare fraud’ on April 17, 2017
Welfare’s fraud numbers are implausible by any stretch of the imagination – the publication of dodgy figures the day before the PSC report is published is downright dishonest https://t.co/AblMDZiw1u

The ‘anti-fraud’ measures being trumpeted by the Department of Social Protection are primarily concerned with augmenting the Department’s capabilities in surveillance and punishment, not fraud reduction. Fraud reduction is the pretext, not the goal.

Seems to be going well.
New clampdown launched on social welfare fraud (RTÉ)
Leave the welfare cheats alone! . FIRE industries cheat, so by that logic , welfare cheats should get away with it too. (?)
I think most FG voters don’t truly believe that there is alot of social welfare fraud but they do believe that the majority of claimants are content to live off the state from cradle to grave with no intention of ever working and will never bother with such a bourgeois idea as having to pay for your home and to bring up your kids. There is a huge disadvantage for anyone who was brought up in welfare to consider working for a living- you dont get all the freebies as you would on the social, you wont get a free house near your mammy either so you don’t bother. Working and contributing to society has to be of benefit to the individuals or this will never change.
It should be of benefit to a persons mental health to work before any other material considerations
Maybe we could just all throw our hands up and blame the system though?
One would have to be mental to want to live near & see mammy every day of their life anyway.
For sure
And that’s why (we are told) we have sfa unemployment? Because there are so many people unemployed and fiddling the system? Strange summation
What Pat O’Donnell said
According to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the phenomenon also known as “bogus self-employment” costs the exchequer up to a quarter of a billion euro a year in lost PRSI contributions to the Social Insurance Fund, which pays for employment entitlements including jobseekers benefit and the state pension.
Cut the welfare fraud at the top and we could save a fortune on legal bills before this PSC debacle goes any further.
arrrgh BS!!
