Independent Dublin Bay South candidate Dolores Cahill, a professor at the school of medicine at the University College Dublin, is denied entry to the by-election count centre without a face covering.

I see on social media there is some heave-ho between her and Ben over dosh.
She doesn’t need exposure in Ireland, she’s known globally for her antivaxx antimask views, as well as her racist ones of course! She speaks at international ratlicker events where the money is. Getting a handful of votes in a Dublin byelection won’t do her “brand” in Ireland any good because people know who she is and it will show just how unpopular her sort are in this country.
Exactly @daisychainsaw . The antivaxers were using this woman’s qualifications as a way to legitimize their stance … I think accusing guards of rape because she wasn’t allowed in the building without a mask and the rest of her rant, probably negated any clout her academic qualifications may have given her .

I hope that when the votes are counted she gives us a few verses of “This is what democracy looks like!” It was one of her party pieces in the past, before that fickle jade ‘Reality’ came calling.

What kind of professor is she?
she’s a real professor but went off the rails a couple years ago when there were some serious question marks over a paper she published. looks like it broke her psychologically and she started buying into any old nonsense after that. Once upon a time she published good research but those days are long gone.
These excuses drive me potty though. Gems went do-lally over grief. I read some other luminary banging on about Justin Barrett’s lifelong search for belonging to explain his warped nativism. John Waters and his medical set-backs…yada, yada, yada. These excuses neither explain nor exculpate their behaviour.

not everyone needs to be seen and heard
I think it’s helpful for us to understand that seemingly “fine” people can get lost in conspiracy theories quite easily and it can damage their personal lives and relationships.
That way we can be better equipped to support them and prevent further damage.

Agree about ‘The Heretics’ by Will Storr. Very effectively demonstrates why ordinary sensible people ‘dig in’ rather than adjust their beliefs in the light of compelling evidence. We are all capable of being swayed and sometimes catastrophically misled by our stupid brains.
Everybody should read that book, not because it illuminates the warped thinking of conspiracy theorists and fringe lunatics but because it asks you to consider your own confidently-held beliefs. It’s also entertaining and well-written.

I don’t mind people being sceptical and interrogating received wisdom. It’s healthy. What I have grown weary of is the single-note nature of it all, the constant banging on about the pandemic to the exclusion of all other topics of conversation. Give it a rest please.

I disagree- she was the first to raise the Nuremberg Code which is now being taken very seriously and, she was the first to raise the spectre of Antibody Dependant Enhancement ( ADE). I hope she is wrong about ADE, but I fear she may be right- time will tell.
She is also quite a wealthy woman in her own right, so I don’t think money is her motivation at all.

One follows the other. If they can prove fraud on scientific grounds- which is likely- then the coercion element of the Nuremberg Code can be pursued against medics. First up I expect is the PCR test- the Portuguese courts have already set a precedent on that.

Dolores and the far-right in Ireland are in disarray. It seems to me there is a struggle among quite a few to become the commander-in-chief. The fandom support quite a few of the leaders in that they attend their various protests / rallies, but behind the scenes there is huge competition for the funds / donations. Allegedly the distraught Dolores gave out to Barrett and Dwyer for scuttling by her and donning masks to get in to the count. A bit of a contest between Barrett and Cahill over who’d be the first to reach two hundred votes. There really is such a thing as bad publicity, if their combined vote is anything to go by.
I like her a lot, she’s very entertaining, a bit posh, has mad hair, and annoys the fupp out of several of yous!
