You Won’t Be Needing Those [Updated]

Ah here.

The US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) did not have the legal authority to impose a mask mandate for airline, bus and train passengers, and that the government broke the law by doing it without first seeking public comment, a federal judge has ruled

Last night/this morning.

Via The Guardian:

A federal judge in Florida has struck down Joe Biden’s national mask mandate covering airplanes, airports and other public transportation, prompting the White House to announce the rule would not be enforced while federal agencies decide how to respond to the judge’s order.

The ruling appeared to free operators to make their own decisions about mask requirements, with several airlines announcing they would drop mandates, but other transport networks including the New York City subway planning to keep them in place.

The mandate was overturned on Monday by the US district judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle in Tampa, who judged the rule as exceeding the authority of US health officials in the coronavirus pandemic.

She added that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had failed to justify its decision and did not follow proper rule-making procedures.

The Guardian? Hardly the most credible of sources now is it?

All this proves is how absolutely tone deaf the current US administration actually are. The issue became so political but, it became obvious to even the most compliant that masks do not work.

So the Democrats became the focus of people’s anger- and rightly so. This went hand in hand with their lockdowns and vaccine mandates of course, both of which were also completely useless.

    1. Kim Cardassian

Ah SOQ ya big loser. Would you not go out and get the ride or something. Would do you good.

      1. SOQ

Loser? We are most definately winning- is that the best you can do?

Have you had your forth jab yet?

        1. Tom J

@ SOQ, Why do you insist on asking people if they have had their fourth jab yet, or any other jab. People’s GDPR is none of your business.

          1. SOQ

I couldn’t care less and you know it, but when these insidious trolls are going to make personal attacks- it is fair game to respond in kind.

          2. SOQ

Dear God- another waffler and spoofer trying to make themselves relevant.

Are you really so desperate for attention in your life?

          3. Tom J

            @ SOQ,
What was it you were saying about people bullying and calling you names. A clueless clown you say.

          4. paul

you’re not going to get through to SOQ, Tom. He’s living in a glass house and has been launching stones for years. The best outcome is that he’ll vanish from a discussion rather than face up to his own hypocrisy.

    2. Nigel

Unless, of course, they become the focus of anger for not doing enough to deal with the pandemic and giving in to cynical and authoritarian Republican hostility to public health measures. Of course, Republican sabotage of public health may have made them unworkable, and effectively murdered thousands.

      1. SOQ

You are actually using the word ‘authoritarian’ when describing people who followed the REAL health science? Funny.

        1. Nigel

I’m using the word authoritarian to describe people who pass laws making it illegal for private individuals or duly elected governments to take measures to protect public health during a pandemic, yes. These people pander to voters who don’t believe in evolution, think teaching aout racism in history is racist and think it’s okay for people who get sick to go bankrupt.

  2. Daisy Chainsaw

Ugh… Florida. Trump and DeSantis making it a no-go area for anyone with self respect.

    1. paul

they’re also in the process of banning maths books due to racism. Charming part of the world, we should be looking to them for all our good decisions.

      1. Micko

Does anyone know what was in the actual books for them to be removed from the school curriculum?

I mean the exact wording or content that they had an issue with?

        1. paul

they’ve not published the content of their complaints, just that it relates to Critical Race Theory (CRT). Before there is a ruling, I think they have to disclose that content but they’re objecting to that too.

Looking at the makeup and history of the people involved, it’s probably the examples that have been used that’s gotten their back up same as in the past eg. Juan has 10 melons and gives 5 of them to his classmate Isabella etc.

The other option is that they wish to refuse the books involved, had no valid objection so are saying CRT to beat the racism drum.

All in all, not improving how the world appreciate Florida’s unique charms.

          1. Micko

Well if that’s the type of thing they are removing the books for, then that’s ridiculous. I’d be the first to agree with you there.

But I think people should wait and see what exactly the books are being removed for, before criticising.

It may be for good reasons.

          2. paul

@Micko: oh absolutely. Florida’s main exports is disappointment so my expectations for a reasonable outcome are low but not zero.

@Nigel: oh yeah, there is mad racism still alive in the south but there is enough of a market for it amongst the population so I can’t see it going away any time soon. As far as they’re concerned, the Civil War was a draw. Just like most types of mould, exposing it to the open air so people can see how disgusting it is, is the way to go.

          3. Micko

“ We don’t have to wait and see”

Well just skimming that Washington Post article, I can understand why people wouldn’t be happy with books of a sexual nature being in children’s libraries.

“I’m not advocating for any book to be censored but to be RELOCATED to the ADULT section. …”
wrote Bonnie Wallace, a 54-year-old local church volunteer. (The article capitalised those words btw – not me)

Is this the full picture? Who knows, but probably should wait and see what the context is before jumping to conclusions.

          4. Nigel

They pray over decisions and shut people out of meetings that are meant to be public, and they don’t move books, they get rid of them, and harass and threaten librarians, they ban books they ban topics in school, they ban abortion, they want to ban contraception, they make it a crime to support trans kids. Amazing who you choose to give the benefit of the doubt to.

          5. Micko

            “ban abortion”

Are they not just reducing down the number of weeks that you can have an abortion at in Florida? Don’t think there’s a ban.

It was 24 weeks and is now it’s 15 weeks. And doesn’t include if the mother is in danger or the baby has an awful abnormality and won’t survive.

Considering a baby can now survive if born at 22 weeks – it’s not exactly crazy stuff. Seems like it’s just an update to go along with improvements in medicine.

            https://www.bbc.com/news/health-50144741

          6. Nigel

In Republican controlled states they are banning abortions. They charged a woman who had a miscarriage for murder after she told medical staff she’d tried to self-induce an obortion. These people really are monsters. They want to ban books and rewrite history and roll back LGTBQ rights. Everything is a wedge with these people.

          7. Micko

            We’re talking about Florida.

But anyway, as far as I can see all states allow them. Yes, there are some term restrictions, but they are in line with the improving survival rates for premature babies.

With the exception of Texas, which I agree, now has a ridiculous 6 weeks abortion cut off as of last year.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_Texas

Incidentally, I believe the cut off point for abortions in Ireland is 12 weeks. Much less than Florida and the majority of all US states.

          8. Nigel

Republicans want to ban abortion. They’re not shy about hiding it. It’s nothing to do with survival rates. They also want to ban contraception. They also want to ban books and control the teaching of history in schools. They are far right Christoan fundamentalists. Pretending they’re not won’t make them go away. And they have deep pockets and they like to fund causes in other countries to ban abortion and roll back LGTBQ rights, and there’s a weird confluence were Russian oligarch funding meets Christan fundamentalist funding. They claim to hate globalism but they sure think global. But they probably agree with you on masks? So that’s okay?

          9. Micko

Jesus your pathological hatred of a political party in another country is crazy.

I’ve already disproven some of the points you’ve made as factually incorrect – with actual links and proof. Yet you still insist that these people are monsters. That every person who’s a republican is a monster. Not a human with a different opinion. – a monster.

Fathers, mothers, grandparents, sons, daughters who love their friends and families – ALL MONSTERS!!!

Your childlike view of the world is fascinating Nigel. And now you’re back onto masks.

            You’re beyond help.

            P.S Never change. ;-)

          10. johnny

The new 15-week ban in Fla. does not make exceptions for cases of incest, rape or human trafficking.

          11. Micko

Nor does Ireland’s Johnny. Monsters we are here too I guess…

But I’d agree with you, it should allow for those cases.

Still doesn’t mean the republicans are the literal embodiment of the empire from Star Wars.

          12. TenPin Terry

            I love Florida.
Well, Old Florida to be precise.
Swing round the bend in the Panhandle and head up the Forgotten Coast.
Steinhachee, Apalachicola, Indian Pass, Port St Joe, Grayton Beach and then onto the Redneck Riviera and if you keep going you eventually hit swamps and New Orleans.
My favourite part of America. One of the great drives.

          13. johnny

..yeah,may the force be with you.

‘That’s the only explanation we can find for a group of MAGA die-hards protesting outside Disney World during Holy Week, over the company’s opposition to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. As you might be aware, that bill has been passed into law over the objections of Disney and state LGBT activists.’

          14. Micko

Not really getting your point Johnny.

Those MAGA people are extremists. Total Headcases.

That’s like saying the Westboro Baptist Church or a-holes protesting outside abortion clinics are a good representation of Christians around the world.

    2. SOQ

A lot of people with no self respect so.

Florida ranks #1 in net migration for fifth consecutive year

Florida’s net migration experienced the most gain at 30,129, followed by Texas with 26,245.

California on the other hand saw the biggest loss of residents at -213,510 in 2020, up from -129,386 the previous year for a difference of -84,124. New York followed with a loss of -168,712 in 2020 from -134,896 in 2019 for a difference of -33,816 year-over-year.

      https://tampabayedc.com/news/florida-ranks-1-in-net-migration-for-fifth-consecutive-year/

      1. Nigel

Which is ironic considering how much the Republican Party hates migrants, and don’t believe in climate change.

      2. John

        LOL,
They can certainly spin a story every which way.
Sure Florida has the highest net migration in the US. Its where Americans go to retire! There and Arizona. It has one of the oldest populations in the US.
Florida has more people over the age of 65 than under 18.

        1. SOQ

And, by their age, more depart via a box too. Those figures are NETT increases, just like California and New York is NETT losses.

But while we are on the subject of age- surely if these precautions were effective, Florida with its disregard for such AND very aged population, should have the highest CoVid-19 fatality rate in the US?

          1. johnny

your ‘math’ and grasp of data is absolute rubbish, its kindergarden level at best, yeah ban math books they clearly were wasted on you.

..oh hold on,i have be in Tallaght to be an ‘expert’ on domestic US court cases that only affect travel here in states.

while you were sleeping we had a vaccination-which data are you relying on pre or post ?

any chance a link to back your ‘data’,given your an Irish based expert on US domestic issues?

            https://abcnews.go.com/Health/red-blue-america-glaring-divide-covid-19-death/story?id=83649085

“Florida and Georgia had more than 200 deaths per 100,000, while New York had 112 per 100,000, New Jersey 73 per 100,000 and Massachusetts 50 per 100,000. “Between August and December 2021, Florida experienced more than triple the number of excess deaths (29, 252) as New York (8,786), despite both states having similar population counts (21.7 million and 19.3 million, respectively),” Steven H. Woolf wrote.

            https://rollcall.com/2022/03/30/republicans-pandemic-deaths-pollsters/

put up or FFS shut up about US domestic issues you know nothing.

          2. anti bot

You cannot challenge soq and his various on anything. You’ll either get called a stupid nick name or he’ll switch subjects and comment under a different name. The worst the Internet can offer

          3. SOQ

Worldofmeters is blocked on Broadsheet for some reason. Go to worldofmeters and order by deaths per 1m pop- New York is 13th while Florida is 17th and Texas is 26th.

Not that I know why I am bothering to respond- you pig ignorant abusive thug.

          4. anti bot

see an absolute bully. Apparently I’m mentally challenged, but you just spout this shite instead of engaging in a debate. You’re the most sexist, abusive person on here. I’m calling you out. Why are you so disrespectful to anyone who disagrees with you? Why so angry? why post info from bull poo websites under multiple aliases? Why not get a life?

          5. anti bot

Can’t debate….who is the one with mental issues. I know, you’ll just deflate, change the subject and user name and then attack someone else on here. Why not go back to the UK and stop using this site?

      3. Oro

This is mainly to do with state income tax (Florida has none) property tax (Florida’s is very low) and social security tax (Florida has none). If you want to understand patterns of migration within the US it’s generally a matter of local tax. It also has no inheritance tax, and no estate tax. It’s old people that want to avoid paying tax.

I view tax avoidance as disrespectful, and that people are willing to look the other way on the new homophobic, racist and misogynistic legislation (namely the don’t say gay bill, the CRT panic in schools and the new abortion restrictions) so that they can pay less tax makes them generally quite disrespectful in my book.

One thing I would say on that is that the poverty trap is more dangerous in the US than Europe so I can understan people being paranoid about money in their old age but I don’t think this is the case for most of these types of migrants.

          1. Oro

You’re not going to reply to the rest of the comment? You’ll only engage with the one part you think you can snare me into some preset Tucker soundbyte of yours? Pls.

            Also stop calling people pigs.

        1. johnny

..his data/numbers are total garbage and just rubbish,he has no understating of them, none at all.
its impossible to have any exchange as he simply has no grasp of that data, no skills, none, he will change topics or hurl abuse and insults, due to not understating what he rips and pastes then posts.

“In the new estimates, Florida led the nation with the most significant natural change net loss, with deaths outnumbering births by 45,248 people from July 1, 2020, to July 1, 2021.”

(Fifty-four of Florida’s 67 counties saw more deaths than births during the reporting period, according to the Bureau.)

          https://floridapolitics.com/archives/511104-no-state-had-a-bigger-gap-last-year-between-deaths-and-births-but-migration-kept-floridas-population-growing/

          1. SOQ

And you never hurl abuse and insults eh? You spent months doing so at me to the point where Bodger described you as ‘highly strung’, which was an excuse if ever I heard one.

You are not highly strung- you are a pig ignorant thug who thinks such abusive behaviour is acceptable- IT IS NOT !

I used the Tamba bay Economic Development Council figures- if you got a problem then take it up with them.

            https://tampabayedc.com/about-us-2/

          2. johnny

            …you sound a bit mad:)
            LOL.
what data, you have no clue, zero, nada, zilch about what point your even trying make.
instead,as usual, you have hijacked the tread and made it all about the sad old queen.

          3. SOQ

Yes I am mad- I am mad that pig ignorant thugs like you are allowed to bully people off this site- and that the administrators do frig all about it.

  3. Nigel

Don’t be fooled! They’ll try to actually prepare for pandemics! Which might reduce deaths, injuries, disruptions! How dare they!

      1. Nigel

You’re being asinine but yes, it is VERY CONTAGIOUS and the official death toll in the US is approaching one million, but it’s okay, they’ve stopped testing so everything’s normal except thousands are dying of variants of a two-year-old disease.

        1. SOQ

You repeatedly mix up contagiousness and virulence- the difference has been explained to you more than one.

Are you in London too Nigel?

          1. Nigel

Covid is highly contagious, it is very easily transmitted to others – my usage was correct. It is also quite virulent.

            Awoooo werwolves of London.

          2. Daisy Chainsaw

If you’re going to have a go at UK based commentators sticking their oar into Irish issues, it’s rank hypocrisy for you to be commentating on foreign issues Y/N?

          3. Daisy Chainsaw

My poor little angry, confused, SOQpuppet! It would only be hypocrisy on my part if I supported the health protection measures publicly while flouting them privately.

          4. paul

SOQ is the master of the ‘deflect, dodge and refuse to address valid criticism’ maneuver. Though it’s usually more like a person putting a stick into the spoke of their own bicycle, while they are riding it.

          5. Daisy Chainsaw

Whingebag hypocrite Karen still being a whingebag months after restrictions have been lifted!

I’ll answer your question when you answer mine!

          6. Daisy Chainsaw

Whingebag hypocrite SOQaren bitches about people from outside Ireland commenting on Irish website about Irish issues while proceeding to comment on US/UK/Ukrainian/Russian issues.

            Conspiraloons don’t do Irony!!

          7. Annie14Tennis

MsDaisyC (her other calling card) calling others here whinebags? The whinebag personified who spends her day jumping from Broadsheet to Twitter to politics.ie to show as many people as possible how sad a life she leads.

          8. Daisy Chainsaw

And SOQaren still hasn’t answered why it’s not hypocrisy that he thinks people outside Ireland can’t comment on Irish issues, but people like him can comment on UK/US/Ukraine/Russia etc.

          9. anti bot

soq and his various aliases cannot debate anything. But he’ll be back here tomorrow with his quoan sexist comments, calling everyone stupid nick names or calling them mentally ill. The worst the Internet has to offer.

          10. Mad

I’m actually amazed that politics.ie still exists – but also not at all surprised Daisy is a “well-known member”.

          11. GiggidyGoo

            Nitter? Twitter, Politics, Broadsheet.
A lot of time on her hands.
            Consistent though.

(What is Nitter supposed to be?)

          12. SOQ

@Daisy Chainsaw there is a huge difference between commenting on events in another country and actually meddling in the day to day running of a website in such.

Meddling to such an extent that one has to question who or what is behind it, because it is hard to believe it is just down to just one or two individuals.

I see you have been using the murder of those two fellas in Sligo to goad others again- disgusting behaviour. Along with that other idiot trying to shoehorn the trans victimhood into it- and you claim to represent LGBT?

            Do you fcuk.

          13. Daisy Chainsaw

Where do I say I represent LGBT?

I’m beginning to wonder if English is your first language because you misinterpret even the basics.

And Gaslighty Goo… You should see my Only Fans account!

          14. GiggidyGoo

I’d say that’s an Only Fanny account

But you’re a sad individual that has to create such accounts all over the place, all with the same infantile self-made dictionary in order to display how sad you actually are.

          15. TenPin Terry

Is that why you retired your repetitious and dull Joe F account ?
Or was it because it made you look even more mind-numbingly dull than you already are ?

          16. Daisy Chainsaw

Gaslighty spitting homophobic abuse at me? Now where have I seen that on BS before?

Antis either all share the same hateful, homophobic, bigoted views, or… it’s Attack of the Clones time.

          17. GiggidyGoo

MsDaisyC – scraping the barrel now. Sure why not go onto politics.ie, twitter and Nitter and have a full house of rants, and not forgetting to cross refer them to Broadsheet. Sad, sad life. Built around a dictionary of childish sayings. Morning, noon and night.
Working in the Public Service? I think not. No time for that. Walter Mitty’s sidekick.

Speaking of whom – Charger gone full on schizophrenic. ‘Everyone’s Giggidy’ Ha haaaa. Mittyworld open late last night. Actually, it must have been a table for two, as MsDaisyC also gone full schizophrenic too.

            A match made in heaven.

The vaccine only increases your odds when you are infected
It was never designed to do anything else
This is where government lied and as time goes on more and more people will distrust government
Covid 19 was bad enough but even if I had no vaccine I would put more trust in covid 19 than this government
They and they alone ruined many lives and destroyed half of my trade due to their actions

  4. Dr.Fart

so now broadsheet basically just retweets trump supporters (let’s go Brandon). so what does that make broadsheet? trumps new social media site? is that the level its down to now?

    1. Micko

I don’t think someone needs to be a Trump supporter in order to think that Biden is an absolute mess.

      Look at the bunny video.

      1. SOQ

No no Micko you MUST follow the narrative.

Any criticism of Biden = Trump supporter.

Any criticism of the coke head of Kiev= Putin fan boy.

        Nuance will NOT be tolerated.

If you know you are only seeing one side of the story, how do you know you are seeing the right side of the story?- is a question NEVER to be asked.

        1. Nigel

Any criticism of Biden = Trump supporter.

Any criticism of the coke head of Kiev= Putin fan boy.

Any criticism of the invasion = neo-Nazi supporter.

          Nuance will NOT be tolerated.

    2. Dinkum

At least under trump there was no living on the cusp of WW 3
What’s happening now is a good likelihood that WW3 will start this year

  5. Nigel

Must have been fun if you were in a vulnerable category and everyone suddenly demasked mid-flight.

….it’s not real life, all the Trump judge did,who was considered not suitable by the bar association, was prevent enforcement, the rest was just made up by the sheet, the lede is ‘opinion’,it bears no relationship to the facts.

The public comment part is just another red herring as there was a change in admin,if only there was some mouthie,no nothin nordie to give another ‘splainer on domestic US transportation.

They would win on appeal but it was set expire May 3,so may appeal on the point of law or may not, still using them on Air Force One today.

I have decided to give this a break for a while.
I wish Bodger and Nick and all the team the best with their important work and hope they will eventually deal with the terrible bullying of SOQ by a number of nasty people.

You should try it as well Johnny – seriously. A lot of people here probably know who you actually are, your public antics here can’t be good for your own business or reputation. Like V and her meltdowns.
          Smoke one for me, brother.

The site is losing, temporarily I hope, a character that I couldn’t put a value on. ;-) And if I could, I probably couldn’t afford it.
