Astrophysicist Natasha Hurley-Walker marked the position of the mysterious object in the Milky Way with a little sun symbol

This morning.

Via BBC:

The object, first spotted by a university student working on his undergraduate thesis, releases a huge burst of radio energy three times every hour.

The pulse comes “every 18.18 minutes, like clockwork,” said astrophysicist Natasha Hurley-Walker, who led the investigation after the student’s discovery, using a telescope in the Western Australian outback known as the Murchison Widefield Array.

While there are other objects in the universe that switch on and off – such as pulsars – Ms Hurley-Walker said 18.18 minutes is a frequency that has never been observed before.

Finding this object was “kind of spooky for an astronomer,” she said, “because there’s nothing known in the sky that does that.”

From top: Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy (left) and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney; Russian Ambassador to Ireland Yury Anatoliyevich Filatov

This morning.

Via RTÉ News:

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has spoken of his surprise that the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy, met the Russian ambassador to Ireland last Friday.

Mr Coveney made the comments at last night’s meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party.

In late November 2021, Mr Filatov requested a courtesy call with Lieutenant General Clancy and the meeting was arranged for late January 2022.

The meeting was held on 21 January in the Chief of Staff’s Office, McKee Barracks, Dublin.

Meanwhile…

John Brady, Sinn Fein’s Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Defence, has accused Mr Coveney of “undermining” the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy with his comments about meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Ireland.

Mr Coveney “took it upon himself in a public way” to make these comments and that it was “poor judgement” to do this, Mr Brady said.

The Government said that the latest data indicated that it will likely meet or exceed targets for new homes in 2022.

Responding to questions from reporters, Mr Martin also took the opportunity to reignite an increasingly personal row with the Sinn Fein front bench.

Mr Martin lashed out in particular at the privately educated Sinn Fein housing spokesperson Eoin O Broin, as well as accusing the party of serially blocking housing developments on ideological grounds.

There’s been very deliberative attempt by Sinn Fein to create a political narrative, in my view a fraudulent narrative, that members of the Government parties are some elite upper-class cabal who don’t understand the need for housing on the ground for ordinary people,” he said.

“It seems to be Sinn Fein is ruthlessly exploiting the housing crisis for electoral advantage.”

The Russian Ambassador to Ireland Yury Anatoliyevich Filatov (top) has invited fishermen to  discuss the Russian military drill planned for 240km off Ireland’s southwest coast

This afternoon.

…Via RTÉ News

Members of the Irish South and West Fish Producers’ Organisation are to attend a meeting in the Russian Embassy in Dublin tomorrow.

The Ambassador of Russia to Ireland H.E. Yuriy Filatov issued the invitation to hear directly the fishermen’s concerns over proposed Russian naval exercises which are planned to take place off the south west coast early next month.

The delegation of fishermen is expected to highlight the potential harm to fish stocks and cetaceans from the effect of military sonar use and possible disruption from live ammunition drills in the area during the drills.

It is expected that they will also formally request that the planned area for the exercises be relocated further south west into deeper water off the continental shelf.
