Cathal Coughlan – The Knock-Out Artist
No show without punch.
Ex-Microdisney and Fatima Mansions firebrand Cathal Coughlan (top) provides the killer (left) hook in the third single from his new album Song Of Co-Aklan.
The video was directed by George Seminara.
Nick says: Upper cut above the rest.
Wyvern Lingo – Only Love Only Light
Forever blowing bubbles.
It’s child’s play for Bray trio Wyvern Lingo in the cryptic video for the latest single to be released from their new album Awake You Lie.
The band – top from left: Caoimhe Barry, Karen Cowley and Saoirse Duane – recorded the album in Berlin.
Nick says: Bray of light.
Last Friday (the Good one), with a €50 voucher redeemable at any Golden Discs store on offer, I asked you for your favourite songs relating to sports?
You wrote in in your dozens.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
Hey You Bastards I’m Still Here by Mark Kozelek & Desertshore
Fergalito writes:
“Adore this tune which mentions boxing so still counts…I listened to about five times a day for a solid week when I first heard it.”
Runner-up:
When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease by Roy Harper
Stephen Moran writes:
“Growing up in the ’80s and being a fan of the sound of leather on willow was akin to the love that dare not speak its name; but the sight of Marshall, Ambrose and Viv Richards (the master blaster) and Co. routinely thrashing the Sassenachs by an innings to the sound of conch shells at The Oval was worth “spending warm summers days indoors” …
“So in honour of the boys of summer, I nominate a song as beautiful and as evocative as any in the English language.”
Winner:
Long Shot Kick De Bucket by The Pioneers
F_lawless writes:
“Relating the sudden and dramatic demise of noted racehorse Long Shot at a race held at Kingston’s famed Caymanas Park, ‘Long Shot Kick The Bucket’ became one of Trojan Records’ earliest UK chart hits, with the record peaking at No.21 in the Official UK Singles Chart in 1969.”
Nick says: Thanks all.

1994.
Sadly two of those featured, Michael Lowry and Denis O’Brien, are both still with us.
Thank Caiaphas it’s Good Friday.
To ease you through the Easter weekend, why not another music competition?
A reader wrote in with the following suggestion:
“I’m suggesting songs relating to sports/with a sport reference? It’d have to be very broad and encompass every sport from riding a bike/horse – cars/tractor – running/walking – skydiving/deep sea diving/sailing – table-tennis/tiddlywinks – GAA/rugby/soccer etc… You get the drift.”
So there you have it.
Here’s mine.
Reply below to be in with a chance of winning a €50 voucher redeemable at any Golden Discs store.
The winner will be chosen by my caddie.
Please include video links if possible.
Lines MUST close at 10.45pm.
Nick says: Good luck and Happy Easter!
From top: Sibu a 42-year-old male Orangutan listens to violinist Larissa O’Grady; Barry O’Halpin on guitar and Malachy Robinson on double bass play to the Elephants at Dublin Zoo
‘sup?
This morning.
Phoenix Park, Dublin.
Members of Crash Ensemble play to the animals at an empty Dublin Zoo to mark the announcement of the programme for MusicTown 2021 .
MuiscTown celebrates ‘community, durability, and adaptability’ and includes rooftop lullabies performed across the City, choral performances, celebrating DJ culture, and ‘an exploration of sexual identities in Irish music…’
Crash Ensemble will premiere nine, 5-minute new works as part of MusicTown which runs from 15-25 April. These works are reactions to 2020, written by composers ‘outside of the contemporary music field’.
Any excuse.

Apella – Buried You
What’s another year?
Dublin pop sensations Apella – Dara Quilty on drums and Ronan Nolan on guitar (top) have released a limited edition vinyl and CD version of their hit album 1963, which has raked up half a million streams and counting.
The video for the new single Buried You comes courtesy of Ray Keogh.
Dara writes:
“We’ll be donating 100% of all the physical sales proceeds directly to The Marie Keating Foundation. Up against COVID-19 and BREXIT, I am delighted that production is complete and we can finally release our beautiful Vinyl and CDs! I am eternally grateful to everyone who has pre-ordered and we’ll continue to donate sales after the release date!”
The donations go specifically to help fund the outstanding support services the foundation provides to women affected by breast cancer.
Nick says: A good year.
Supertonic Sound Club – The Hump
Come dancing.
Dublin 9-piece soul/funk ensemble Supertonic Sound Club get jiggy with it on this joyous instrumental that can be found on their new double A-side single alongside Let’s Get Arrested on AMTY Records.
Led by Hammond organ devotee Jim Pipe – our answer to Booker T – the group will release their debut album in the autumn.
The video was filmed and edited by Mick White.
Nick says: Jive stars.
