This afternoon.

Dublin Vinyl – Ireland’s ‘state-of-the-art and only record pressing plant’ – have launched The Record Hub, “an online record store designed to help music lovers new and old discover the joy of vinyl.

Hugh Scully writes:

A timely move, the launch of The Record Hub sees the vinyl revival in full rotation, with records set to outsell CDs for the first time since 1986 and global sales of vinyl the highest they’ve been in 30 years.

In Ireland alone, the past few years alone have seen huge growth, with vinyl record sales worth just €500,000 in 2014 and this year they are on target to hit over €5 million.

The Record Hub is the essential vinyl-only online store, promising to be ‘everyone’s local record shop’ and will sell everything from catalogue classics to forgotten gems, new releases, exclusives and accessories.

Free shipping is offered on all orders over €35.

Through its website, The Record Hub will offer advice and guidance on everything from album reviews to setting up a turntable and choosing the best speakers….

In fairness.

Brian Mooney – The Kind Kind Of People

You may remember Brian Mooney (top) as the lead singer of Dublin indie stalwarts The Idiots who made the long gone White Horse their fortress for a time in the 1990s.

Brian has also recorded under the name Beautiful Unit and recently supported A Lazarus Soul in Whelan’s.

Check out his latest video (above) which he uploaded to Vimeo last week. Great title too!

Nick says: Loving Kind.

Fontaines D.C. – Liberty Belle

What a year it was for Dublin’s most feted rock band.

And 2020 looks bright too. Having just seen debut album Dogrel nominated for the Choice Prize, Grian Chatten (third left at top) and the boys have dropped a new video shot partly at last year’s sold out Vicar Street shows.

And they headline Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens on July 4.

Nick says: Ring in the new.

From top: Into Paradise; Larry Gogan

This morning.

Further to news of the death of DJ Larry Gogan.

Via Colm O’Callaghan in the Blackpool Sentinel:

…Larry played consistently by his own rules, and so it went on for almost forty years, during which, on his impeccably pop-tastic playlists, you’d find all manner of emerging gold in among the hits of the day, the odd rare antique and the oldies-but-goodies

To this end, and as numerous musicians, pluggers and alickadoos have already attested, he made life much, much easier for those working in the local entertainment sector.

And in that consistent championing, afforded a public service every bit as valuable and rich as that provided by news, current affairs, analysis and the gab that dominates much of the national radio schedules.

I saw this myself through the heft he consistently lent to a little known band from Churchtown, South Dublin, called Into Paradise, who battled manfully at the crease from 1988 until 1994 and released a series of fine records, to the sound of silence for the most part.

In any other functioning democracy, Into Paradise would have neither been seen or heard before the witching hours.

But in the band’s sweeping, six-minute cri de coeur, ‘Sleep’, Larry heard enough sparkle through the gloom to make him want to play it regularly on the national airwaves in the middle of the afternoon…[more at link below]
