The Lost Brothers – Christmas In The Heart

The Lost Brothers have paid tribute to their late manager Frank Murray by recording a Christmas EP in his honour.

Murray, a legendary figure in the Irish music industry who managed Thin Lizzy and The Pogues, had urged Lost duo Oisin Leech (top right) and Mark McCausland (top left) to record a Yuletide album.

The result is a nostalgic ballad that harks back to the golden age of swing.

Gavin Wood‘s video also nods to a different era… but with a twist.

The Lost Brothers play The Solstice Arts Centre, Navan, County Meath on December 13 and 14.

Nick says: Swing when you’re winning.

The Whileaways – All The Lights On (Must Be Christmas)

And so begins the festive season of Christmas ditties.

First up is Galwegian folk ensemble The Whileaways who serve up a poignant snapshot of Yuletide in the City of the Tribes, with references to the big wheel in Eyre Square and pints in Neachtain’s…

Singer Noelie McDonnell (top left) is ably assisted here by Nicola Joyce (centre), Noriana Kennedy (right), Eimhin Cradock and Will Merrigan.

The archive video of Galway down all the days was edited by Alice McDowell.

Andy White – The Shit Hits The Fan

Paint it White.

Belfast troubadour Andy White (Top) has just released the 13th studio album of his career – Time Is A Buffalo In The Art Of War.

Now based in Melbourne, Australia, the straight-shooting singer/songwriter visits our hemisphere when he plays The American Bar, Belfast, tonight; Dublin’s DC Club on Camden Row, Dublin 2, on Sunday; and Coughlans in Cork on December 5.

In the video (above)  for his new single, Andy channels his inner John Lennon as he goes for a walk by the pier.

Nick says: It will be all White on the night.

The votes are in.

Last week, with a Golden Discs voucher worth a princely €25 on offer, I asked YOU to name your favourite song that mentions the moon.

You answered in your tens.

But there could be only one winner.

Third Place:

Nick Drake – Pink Moon

Jeremy Kyle writes:

Ah shur, you know yourself…

Runner up:

The Sundays – Monochrome

Ghosts of Yep writes:

IMO one of the best and somewhat forgotten female vocalists of the 90’s sings beautifully of a very personal story of her experience of the landing.

Winner:

Andy Williams – Moon River

Joxer writes:

Moon River – whether it be Audrey Hepburn, Andy Williams (above), Sinatra, Jerry Butler or any number of others who covered it, its one of those quintessential songs of the mid century that is pure magic.. Even Frank Ocean’s attempt at butchery was saved by the pure beauty of the melody and lyric.

Reminds me of family get-togethers in the 70s when i was a wee’un, adults raising glasses and laughing and warmth of cosy family time, and whenever iI hear it, iI get a dose of fuzzy golden-hued nostalgia.

Thanks all.

Thanks Brother – Call It Love

Looks like Tony Bennett wasn’t the only one who left his heart in San Francisco.

The new song from Roisin O (top left) and John Broe (top right) aka Thanks Brother is a love-gone-wrong tale with a video shot while on tour in the US including panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the shining West Coast city by the bay.

Call It Love features on the duo’s new debut EP.

You can catch them live tomorrow night in Dundalk’s Spirit Store with Ham Sandwich; in Galway’s Roisin Dubh on December 5; and supporting The Coronas in Killarney INEC on December 29.

Nick says: Thanks, Thanks Brother.

A lesson from the school of rock.

Dublin-based singer/songwriter Amy Ellen (top) joins forces here with her fellow students from the BIMM music school to create a compelling cri de coeur.

The video was shot in Dublin’s Displace Studios as part of the Gust Sessions.

The song is now available on all major streaming platforms, and Amy is set to release her debut EP next year.

Nick says: Top of the class.
