A mural of soccer legend George Best is being replaced by a painting of a UVF gunman and the quote ‘Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed‘ in Sydenham, East Belfast.

The Best mural was created in 2010 with the help of Belfast City Council’s Peace III project with a grant of £1,500 to cover materials which itself, replaced a UVF mural at the time.

Lenny Abrahamson, award-winning director of Garage, What Richard Did, Adam and Paul and Prosperity is to direct the screen adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s Man Booker nominated novel Room.

Room has sold over 2 and a half million copies worldwide and tells the story of a mother and child held captive in a shed.

If it’s consistency you’re looking for in directing, Lenny arguably, is yer only man.

Fair play though, in fairness.

churchPew, what a scorcher.

Police had to storm into a church to break up an angry protest staged by part of a congregation demonstrating against their minister. At one stage officers had to stop a man trying to pull the power plug to the church organ. Tensions between two groups within the Ballynahinch Congregational Church reached breaking point during angry scenes yesterday.

It is believed that the church is split into two groups – those who claim to support the traditional church style and those who claim to support the minister who took up the post more than seven years ago. Rev Speers was escorted from the building flanked by police when he had finished his sermon, while his supporters shook his hand as they left the building.

Any excuse.

Listowel man Danny Foley (above) awaits release from prison after a five-year sentence for sexually assaulting a young woman in 2008.

You may recall news reports at the time of how up to 50 supporters queued in single file to shake the offender’s hand in Tralee court.

The priest who gave a character witness for the convicted man, Father Sean Sheehy (top) maintains his belief in Foley’s innocence and reckons the jury delivered the wrong verdict.

He is reported as saying of the victim:

I don’t want to make any judgment on her at all, but obviously the whole situation must have been embarrassing, for the police to happen upon them and what-not. She’s the mother of a young child as well and, you know, that in itself doesn’t look great.”

Fr Sheehy said Foley remains unrepentant and is planning to volunteer for the Samaritans on release having completed a course while in Arbour Hill.
