I approach the Guernica template cognizant and reverent of its meaning and cultural significance. It is a visual shorthand for the overwhelming and gratuitous horror of modern war. But I argue that the cultural takeaway of Guernica is actually the opposite. It transforms incomprehensible tragedy into a cartoon narrative, something we can more easily absorb. This is part of the human process, to distance ourselves from the immediacy of undiluted, overwhelming emotions by overlaying a narrative that simplifies, and in effect, takes us down from three to two dimensions. And this is the underlying concept that I grapple with in all my many versions of Guernica.

DJs from Madchester’s legendary Haçienda nightclub are to take to the Point Theatre 3Arena the week before Xmas on December 17th, where alongside the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, they’ll reinterpret some of the acid house classics that the club made famous.

Sez Stef Edwards:

With a setlist full of dance music classics from the heyday of Manchester’s legendary Haçienda nightclub, these hit tracks have been reinterpreted by the club’s original DJs and will be performed alongside the Dublin’s own RTE Concert Orchestra, the AMC Gospel Choir and guests including New Order’s Peter Hook and Happy Mondays’ Rowetta with Graeme Park DJ’ing live during the concert.

The music that defined dance music will be reinterpreted at the event by a full classical orchestra alongside the influential DJs and artists, as part of an innovative, live fusion event which includes Inner City, 808 State, New Order, The Brand New Heavies, A Guy Called Gerald and more.

A full album of these arrangements will also be released via Haçienda and Sony Classical, executive-produced by Hook, on October 21. Available now for pre-order.

In August 2012, Ballinteer Educate Together National School enrolled its first pupils in temporary accommodation at St. Tiernan’s Community School, Parkvale, Balally, Dundrum, Dublin 16.

While they waited for the design and approval process of a new school building to be completed.

And waited.

And waited.

Help Build Ballinteer Educate Together sez:

Today, FOUR years and 180+ pupils later our staff and kids are still in the same temporary accommodation which is now at full capacity with an ever growing waiting list for new pupils including 2 new Jr infant classes who have just started in September of this year.

The issues that have created this situation are not budgetary (full financial approval has for our new school was granted in 2012) or related to the planning of the building itself. In reality the reasons we do not have a suitable building for our school seem to be bureaucratic in nature and centre around securing planning permission for road access to the new site.

Our initial application was submitted in 2012 and as of today we are no closer to any kind of decision that will help us get our school built.

Sadly it seems that the efforts of the Dept of Education have fallen short and that very few practical steps are being taken by the Dept of Education to resolve these issues.

While the board and PTA appreciate that these processes take time, the continued absence of a solution to this problem has resulted in an unacceptable delay which is now beginning to have an adverse affect on the staff and pupils of our school.

As our school continues to grow rapidly these affects will only become more serious and its simply a matter of time before our kids educational experience begins to suffer as a result.
