What you may need to know:

1. Acclaimed Asian director Park Chan-wook did the classic Oldboy (2003), soon due an ill-advised remake from Spike Lee. Now Park is making his belated US film-making debut.

2. Nicole Kidman’s been associated with more turkeys over the past than Bernard Matthews; now she appears to be going through her Joan Crawford phase.

3. Name that face, Part One: Kidman’s daughter is fellow Aussie Mia Wasikowska, from Alice In Wonderland (2010) and Albert Nobbs.

4. Name that face, Part Two: Wasikowska’s creepy uncle with the excellent eyebrows  is Matthew Goode, from Watchmen (2009). Tom Cruise would have been a better choice.

5. The movie was written by Wentworth Miller, star of choice TV guilty pleasure Prison Break.

6. Forecast: promising, with the likeliness of scenery chewing.

Release Date: March 2013

These extraordinary images by Andre Ermolaev are aerial phogrpahs of rivers flowing through the beds of volcanic ash that cover much of Iceland. Sez he:

Iceland is a wonderful country; I would even say that it is a true paradise for all the photo shooting-lovers. But what has become a real discovery for me is the bird’s eye view of the rivers flowing along the black volcanic sand. It is an inexpressible combination of colors, lines, and patterns. The photo represents the mouth of the river falling into the ocean. […] A little bit upstream there is a yellow-colored brook flowing into the river, but yellow currents fail to mix with the main water flow. One can estimate the scale judging by the car tracks that are clearly seen on the black sand. This is just a river, just a volcano, just our planet.

A dangerous game…

THE FAILURE of senior Labour Ministers to back Róisín Shortall in her dispute with Minister for Health James Reilly was the deciding factor in her decision to resign as Minister of State, according to supporters.
The last straw for Ms Shortall came on Monday night when Labour leader Eamon Gilmore publicly backed Dr Reilly over his party colleague in a row about primary care centres, according to sources close to the former junior minister.
Her resignation has plunged Labour into its biggest political crisis since it entered Government in February 2011.

In fairness, that February 2011 crisis was a doozy…

It’s tough to overstate the extent of his potential victory in Ireland…

Former US president Bill Clinton says he could in theory run for president in Ireland or France — but admitted his bad French would make him “toast” in an election there.

The 66-year-old, who served two terms in the White House from 1993 to 2001, said his Irish heritage made him eligible to run for office there, while the fact he was born in Arkansas means he could enter a Gallic poll race.

The filthy old blueshirt machine,
Beat the decent and honest Róisín,
Though forced out of her job,
By that terrible mob,
She’ll always be both heard and seen.
